These two days alone will feature over 25 school screenings and workshops for students in grades Primary to 12. The ViewFinders School Program appeals to an entire grade spectrum of GCOs (General Curriculum Outcomes) from elementary to senior high, as a visually-based event which explores other cultures, a forum for discussion, an inspiring opportunity for hands-on discovery of different mediums and as a possibility to introduce the later grades to a growing cultural industry full of potential. Lesson Plan
In the Make a Book Into a Movie Project , Tina Marie Tedeschi describes a project she has designed to accompany her students' reading of the novel Billy Budd by Herman Melville. The activity has students serve as "casting directors" for a movie based on the book; they choose famous actors to play the key roles. The students also design a poster for the film, write positive and negative reviews, and create a script for one scene. This lesson can easily be adapted for use with other novels and short stories.
Assessment
Student written work is collected and assessed using grade-level writing standards. If desired, students may act out their scripts and submit videotape to share with the class for evaluation.

Grade Level - Junior High / High School I posted this lesson plan / culminating task on another site earlier this year. Originally, I used it at the end of a unit in Grade 12 English Media on "Representation in Media," After the terrorism of Sept 11th, a teacher from Pennsylvania emailed me to let me know she was going to adapt it to "help my students define what it means to be American." Timeline for activity: One week (or five hour-long periods). ** A rubric is also available. Email me if you'd like a WordPerfect copy of it. Also, let me know how your experience turns out with this activity. My students really enjoyed it! God bless.

Mainstream TV and films offer children little more than a steady diet of garbage for the mind. Too often commercial media distorts children’s perception of the world and "teaches" them values which most parents and educators deplore.
  • Start learning how to view films selectively and critically, so that you can communicate effectively with your students about the media. Hear basic vocabulary, principles and concepts underlying media literacy.
The workshop will showcase two films The Bet (Norway) and (Brazil). Discussion will focus on the emotional, cultural and educational impact of the two films.

Each month, we will create new lessons based upon outstanding PBS series and around outstanding Web resources.
Cyber Currency, Currently
This mini-unit (set of lessons) uses games, easy explanations, and the "Trading Places" episode of the popular animated series CYBERCHASE to teach kids about financial literacy. Kids learn the value of currency and how to save and earn interest. In a key lesson, kids even get to purchase items in their classroom's general store. It's a fun way to learn the importance of being financially literate!
Filling Empty Pockets
In this lesson, students explore the concepts of borrowing and credit with an emphasis on credit cards. Students learn how credit works, why banks and other corporations extend credit, and what credit consumers need to know, including how to preserve their access to credit and how to avoid "credit trouble." Students also consider the real cost of buying on credit, weighing the costs and benefits of credit purchases against the option of budgeting and saving. Finally, students will consider various real offers made by credit providers and decide which offer, among several, is the best.

Built around a poem written by a Cambodian immigrant girl, this activity helps students understand the feelings of immigrants or anyone that mainstream American society considers "outsiders." It was developed by a teacher who was frustrated by the derisive remarks and insensitive behavior displayed by American-born students toward recently arrived immigrant students in her classes. By the end of the lesson, she observed students apologizing voluntarily to their classmates for their prior lack of sensitivity!
Immigrant Debate
PDF
HTML
This lesson is based on a technique called "four corners": students move to different areas of the room, depending on their reactions to various controversial statements about immigration. Students then research, debate, and revisit earlier claims. This is an excellent lesson, especially when paired with the Immigration: Oral History lesson because it gives students the opportunity to move from secondary to primary sources, thus personalizing and making more meaningful the information they are learning. It is also effective when paired with the Film Study lesson plan.

    http://www.theatrebooks.com/drama_education/
Welcome to the new Drama in Education catalogue! TheatreBooks has produced catalogues for teachers regularly since 1975, and it is with the knowledge that teachers have come to rely on these as resource tools which has guided our selection. The titles presented here do not reflect our entire Drama in Education section, but are a reflection of the most significant titles chosen by teachers for use in the classroom. All the annotations are new and are based on a thorough reconsideration of each book. In addition to the written annotations, we have included a few footnotes to further detail our entries. Firstly, we have designated the age group for which each book is geared. The letters P, J, I, and S refer to the following grade levels: P rimary (K-3); J unior (3-6); I ntermediate (6-9), and S enior (9-12). As you will notice, many of the books are useful for a variety of grade levels and, as leading drama educator Dr. Larry Swartz has commented: "Each particular group of youngsters is unique, and it is they, after all, who create the action." Our designations are meant as a guide only. Further, the books that are listed in the Drama in Education section of our catalogue have also been classified according to content as follows:
