Sydney Convention Centre, Darling Harbour, February 26-28, 2002 The New Zealand-based Rygiel will be profiling his work on the first of Peter Jackson's ambitious film trilogy Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. Rygiel is appearing exclusively at AEAF to talk about his CG work on the film that is due to open on Boxing Day and has become one of the most highly anticipated VFX films of the year. By contributing crucial digital elements to the film making techniques, Rygiel helped create the environment of Middle Earth. At AEAF he'll explain the techniques used to take the audience into this mythical world of Orcs, Hobbits and Trolls, and how he bought the stupefying Balrog and the Cave Troll to life for the big screen. From Cinesite Europe's London studios, John Lockwood makes a special appearance at AEAF to talk about the extensive use of visual effects on the television epic Band of Brothers. Due for screening on the Nine network early in 2002, Band of Brothers is the most expensive television series ever made costing US$120 million, and using more pyrotechnics than the entire production of Saving Private Ryan. In his session, Lockwood will show split screen footage to describe the techniques used to create the mood, feel and look of the series. Now into its seventh consecutive year, AEAF is a melting pot of computer-generated creativity and a forum for the world's top animators and computer artists to share and develop their vision making techniques. Comprising of seminars, workshop "Masterclasses" and the AEAF Awards, AEAF is designed to enlighten, educate and entertain CG novices and gurus alike and bring the industry together at one special event.

Many artists have realized their visions using animation as a means to externalize their inner thoughts and unique points of view. Rambles and Rants about Film:
Can Traditional Animation Survive?

Written by Eric Hasman (Editor in Chief)
Traditional hand drawn 2-D animation is back this summer but it's not what it use to be. The two big budget animation helpings this summer, DreamWorks's Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron , consists of nontalking animals as the main characters, and Disney's breaks from their tradition of overly cute and nice main character and stars a naughty alien who is a fugitive of the law. Not only that but super thin heroines are taking the year off, along with cute comic sidekicks, over-the- top villains and A-list movie stars doing voice-overs. What exactly is going on here? The main reason is 2-D animation with all of its traditional ingredients has been failing at the box office big time for the past three years and even before that. The last big 2-D hit was 1999's Tarzan , which made a very respectable $171 million. Disney's most recent 2-D release was the action adventure

Gary Trousdale
Voiced by: Type of animation: Plot: Animators: Original music by: Elton John Additional info: August 19, 2002 Information provided by Animated Movies . For more animation coverage check them out. In October 2001, Rob Sprackling and John Smith, who wrote the screenplay of Chicken Run , revealed that they had "a project with Disney which is based on garden gnomes. It’s a little story that we concocted using the famous English garden gnome as our lovable character, and that’s through Rocket Pictures which is Elton John’s company. They have a deal with Disney. We seem to have curiously found ourselves writing in the animation/CGI world. You tend to get known very quickly when writing to those parameters." A Disney insider revealed in May 2002 that animation director Kirk Wise was bailing on WDFA. He recently packed up his office on the Burbank lot, abandoning his long time film-making partner, Gary Trousdale in order to pursue live action opportunities. Which means that Trousdale will now have to develop his next project for Disney Feature Animation, , all by himself.

A Forceful Career
After seeing the blockbuster hit Star Wars as a youngster, Ron Bublitz Jurassic Park
After graduation, he spent a year and a half in Hawaii designing resorts, then got a job in Florida working on an animated Christmas special, Wisely’s Christmas Adventure . “My duties included character rigging, overseeing the render farm, character animation and GUI programming,” he explains. After that project, Ron found that the skills that he had focused on were in demand by the industry. He had several offers to choose from, including Disney Animated Features . He turned down the chance to work with the company that created Dinosaur and Roger Rabbit in favor of fulfilling a dream. He went to work for San Francisco’s , the George Lucas company that has created special effects for eight of the top 15 box office hits of all time (winning 14 Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects), including Star Wars
“I worked on The Mummy Returns and am presently on Star Wars: Episode II ,” says Ron. “I’m a Creature Wrangler - that includes skinning/ enveloping creatures, corrective shape modeling, clothing and hair and flesh simulations and script programming.” The traditional animation portion of his VFS training is something that he feels strongly about. “It was incredibly valuable,” says Ron. “It showed that CG animation didn't exist in a vacuum but builds upon the hard-won skills of the pioneers of animation.” He also emphasizes the importance of planning. “One of the strengths of the program was the emphasis placed on planning in CG. The grads I've come across from some other schools rarely see the value in it and so don’t work as efficiently as they could.”

A world void of the Cinema or Television would, for the majority of people, be a very different one. The flat moving image attempts to replicate the way we think, see and feel. Hence the study of this copy of our world is a key to understanding what we partly are through our senses. At the heart of the venture of Video and Filmmaking is the need to re-interpret our experience of the outside world. As well as drawing, manipulation of the still image and digital animation as core elements, the course also introduces other digital media such as web-ready formatting and cd-rom production of sound and image. The course programme approaches the subject using both fine art and design techniques bringing a wider perspective to the art of the moving image. The focus of the course structure is concentrated on the now more accessible computer aided design and editing processes. Emphasis is placed on encouraging students to develop their creativity into moving images and experimentation is widely encouraged. A wide range of specific concepts and technical skills are introduced, including camera and lighting, digital and analogue editing, digital animation, image manipulation, web-ready formatting, sound recording, story boarding, scriptwriting and film theory.
