    Earthquake: Napier
When: 3 February, 1931 Where: Napier and Hastings, Hawke's Bay What happened:
    • At 10.47 am on 3 February, 1931, a violent shock followed closely by a second rocked Hawke's Bay for almost three minutes. A tanker at sea felt a violent vibration, and the seamen on board looked to the shore to see Napier covered by a cloud of rising dust. The HMS Veronica had just tied up in Napier's inner harbour when the earthquake hit. Captain Morgan at first thought there had been an explosion on board, but then saw the wharf twisting, and beyond it houses and other buildings crumpling to the ground. Dust rose in clouds from the shattered buildings, making it difficult for people to breathe, and huge splits in the roads appeared. Panic-stricken, people ran down to the beaches where they hoped to be safe. As the water in the bay receded with the rising of the land, many thought that a tsunami was on the way, but this was not the case.

Quiet Disasters: House Fires Destroy Lives Every Day
Written by Christina Ward , Staff Writer, DisasterRelief.org Hurricanes make headlines. So do earthquakes, tornadoes, floods and volcanoes. Major disasters such as these remind us of the shocking power of nature to damage and destroy. Cover-story images of major quake damage, or looming twisters on the horizon, stop us in our tracks; we pause from our daily routine to marvel at their frightening effects. Meanwhile, smaller disasters — such as house fires — occur so frequently, often in our own neighborhoods, that they are sometimes overlooked. Except, of course, by the victims themselves. When a house or apartment goes up in flames, it is no less terrifying to residents than a deadly tornado touching down. Both leave lives in shambles. For a family who has lost a loved one in a fire, the effect is devastating. A family awaits news about damage after a fire raced through their home. Sobering Statistics Cumulatively, residential fires do represent a major disaster, along the lines of a violent earthquake or large-scale hurricane. Nearly 5,000 Americans die each year in fires, and 80 percent of those deaths result from home fires, according to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). Fire kills more Americans each year than all natural disasters combined.

DISASTERS: FOREST FIRES AND NUKE SUBS
  • CHAD HANSON, chadhanson@juno.com www.johnmuirproject.org
Executive director of the John Muir Project and author of "Big Timber's Big Lie" in the current issue of Sierra magazine, Hanson said today: "The fire risk is coming from twigs, shrubs and saplings, material less than four inches in diameter. It's not a problem that the timber industry in any way can solve. While the anti-environmental Republicans want to use fires as a pretext to continue logging mature forests on public lands to please the timber industry campaign contributors, the administration is proposing an equally destructive and baseless proposal: to cut down all the small and medium size trees (10-24 inches in diameter). Both approaches would do tremendous habitat damage and actually increase fire risk."
  • MARC EVANS, marcfevans@yahoo.com
  • LLOYD J. DUMAS, ljdumas@utdallas.edu
Author of "Lethal Arrogance: Human Fallibility and Dangerous Technologies" and professor of political economy at the University of Texas at Dallas, Dumas said today: "The sinking of the pride of the nuclear submarine fleet, the Kursk, is not just another tragic loss of life at sea. It has added two more nuclear reactors (and perhaps nuclear warheads as well) to the more than half dozen reactors (U.S., French and Russian) and nearly 50 nuclear warheads already at the bottom of the sea. No one knows just how much ecological damage this nuclear graveyard is doing, or when the silent threat posed to human life by so many out-of-control reactors and weapons will explode in our faces. Blaming the deteriorated condition of Russian military forces for the Kursk tragedy misses the key point. Threatening accidents like this have happened repeatedly in the past and will continue as long as fallible humans insist on creating and operating such complex and dangerous technologies."
