First-aid kit basics
A first-aid kit contains emergency supplies and medication for unexpected minor illnesses or accidents.
While it is vital for people who suffer from a chronic disease or condition to take their medication with them at all times, it is also a good idea for everyone to keep a first-aid kit in the home or car, or take one with them on holiday in case of emergencies.
If going abroad, talk to your doctor before leaving about arrangements for vaccinations or special medication such as malaria tablets
Although it is possible to buy additional items for your first aid kit when you are abroad, it is a good safeguard to purchase extra supplies and medication before your departure. Emergency situations occur unexpectedly and you may find yourself unable to obtain essential items just when you need them most.

Financial Aid Overview Applying for Financial Aid
What Everyone Should Do

Timelines

Additional Issues
Applying for Financial Aid:
What Everyone Should Do:
To apply, you will need to list the schools to which you would like the FAFSA sent. We strongly advise filing on line, but paper applications are available at your high school guidance office or any local college's financial aid office.
Timelines: High School Juniors:
  • Take the SAT or ACT for the broadest scholarship consideration and admissions to many schools. File a "practice" FAFSA, after January 1, to get an idea what your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) will be. This is the amount your family will be expected to be able to give you to help you meet each year's expenses. Doing this a year early will give you an additional year to plan, will position you to ask really smart questions, and will help you develop competitive financial strategies. To file your FAFSA, go to www.fafsa.ed.gov

First Steps to Financial Aid
Basics of College Financial Aid
You probably didn't understand everything about child rearing before you became a parent, but with a little patience and love, you figured out a lot. At first glance, financial aid comes with a lot of terminology that can seem overwhelming. However, with a little help from us, the financial aid process can be quite simple. Our glossary provides an overview of key terms that can get you started. The main thing to understand is that financial aid includes aid that doesn't have to be paid back, aid your child works for, and aid that has to be paid back. These days, most students combine two or even three of these financial aid options to pay for college. Free aid includes grants and scholarships , or your child can work for aid provided by work-study programs . Aid that has to be paid back includes both federal and alternative loans You and your child should begin building a "tuition package" early by saving money and considering all types of aid. Educaid

529 Plan - Saving for College Center
Saving for College is a great idea, but how will a 529 plan affect my child's chances to qualify for financial aid Guidance from the U.S. Department of Education says that your 529 savings account is treated as an asset of the parent or other account owner in determining eligibility for federal financial aid. This means that your expected contribution towards your child's college costs will include 5.6%, or less, of the value of your account for each academic year. This is much better than the 35% assessment against assets owned in your child's name or in a custodial account.
However, the amount of income shown on your child's prior year tax return is assessed at a 50% rate on the current year's application. So if you withdraw 529 account earnings to pay this year's college expenses, it will hurt eligibility next year.
