Along the A.T., hikers encounter a wide variety of terrain and climatic conditions. Preparation is the key for a healthy trip. Choose clothing and equipment carefully, and make sure you have adequate food, water, and shelter available. Carry a basic first-aid kit that can treat scrapes, blisters, sprains, and aches. Always carry first-aid information with you and make sure someone in your group has first-aid training. Blisters
Hantavirus

Heat Cramps
Heat Exhaustion ... Other Issues Blisters Blisters are one of the most common ailments suffered by hikers. Prevention . Break in new boots before you begin your hike. Always keep your feet dry while hiking. When you stop for breaks, take your shoes and socks off to air out your feet; change socks. Don't wait for a blister to develop. As soon as you feel any discomfort, place adhesive tape, duct tape, moleskin, or a blister-care product over areas of developing soreness. Treatment . If a blister forms and irritation makes draining it necessary, wash the area with soap and water and prick the edge of the blister with a needle that has been sterilized by the flame of a match. Bandage the area with a sterile gauze pad and moleskin.

Shelters are generally free and available to all hikers on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups should take care not to monopolize the facilities and should yield to solo hikers and small groups. Some shelters that receive heavy use have caretakers to educate hikers on minimum-impact camping and proper use of trail resources. Shelters More than 260 three-sided shelters or lean-tos are located along the A.T., spaced about a day's hike apart. Features. Designs vary, but typical features include:
  • Raised wooden floors
  • Overhanging roofs
  • Room for 6-12 people
  • Nearby privy and water source
  • Limited number of primitive campsites nearby (except where regulations prohibit it)
Location. Shelter locations are noted in the regional maps and guidebooks, and the Appalachian Trail Data Book

Once the aid officer has calculated the financial need, the goal is to create a package of financial aid awards that together add up to need amount. There are three main "types" of financial aid.
  • Grants and Scholarships funds that do not have to be repaid by the student Loans money lent to the student (or student's parents) to pay for college Work study funds a student earns through a campus sponsored work program
In addition to these main categories of financial aid, specific aid programs can be need based or non-need based.

Floods: Before and After
Floods can be devastating, especially if you're caught unprepared.
Don't try to drive through flooded streets. You can't see where you're going, and your vehicle could stall.
If you live in a flood-prone area, be sure to have plenty of emergency supplies on hand.
REAL VIDEO Click the icon above for an overview of how to prepare for a flood. REAL VIDEO Click the icon above for an overview of what to do during a flood. REAL VIDEO Click the icon above for an overview of what to do after a flood. Every year we see how floods affect countless lives and cause millions of dollars in damage. So why do people keep living in these flood-prone areas? It seems like a no-brainer: just move to a place where floods don't occur. The problem is, people usually don't realize they're in a flood zone until it's too late. Floods are usually caused by heavy rains or melting snow, but more and more frequently they're the result of altered runoff patterns caused by new housing developments. Unless you live in an area where floods are almost impossible, it's best to be prepared. Fortunately, two HGTV specials
