Coastal Expos Bringing Ocean Life Inland
AUSTIN, Texas Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's 5th annual, free Coastal Expos at Edinburg in March and Corpus Christi in April will bring Texas' coastal conservation issues to life when visitors get up-close and personal with crabs, fish, wetlands and beach habitats. Activities include touch tanks with a wide variety of live coastal animals such as sea urchins, sea squirts, crabs, sand dollars, fish and other sea life. Visitors learn about the animals' natural habitats and also how bugs can indicate pollution levels in water. Participants can also help solve a mystery fish kill and take part in fish printing, use paints to make images of coastal fish; identify beach objects by touch and learn about coastal issues through a variety of other fun and educational devices. Visitors to the Edinburg Coastal Expo can enjoy the tropical Valley by going birding at one of the world-class premier birding spots or experiencing the joys of kayaking. And at the Corpus Christi Coastal Expo, visitors can eat fresh fish, shrimp and crabs, as well as get close to other ocean life. Local volunteers are needed and will be given a short training class the day of each event.

June 03, 2002 We the undersigned, endorse the following petition:
STOP WASTING OUR OCEAN FISH
Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsor: Marine Fish Conservation Network
SIGNATURES

GOAL: 8,000
DEADLINE: 4-24-2002
Aquatic wildlife senselessly killed! Government mismanagement, which allows overfishing, destructive fishing practices, and wasteful killing of non-target ocean life resulting in Bycatch (Bycatch is the indiscriminate catching and killing of fish species and marine wildlife other than those a fishing vessel is intending to capture. Shrimp, swordfish, and tuna fisheries have particularly high amounts of bycatch), is putting America's ocean fish at risk of extinction. Combined with new, sophisticated fishing technologies humans can now catch far more fish every year than what our oceans can produce. The problems with mismanagement must be solved now if we want our ocean fish to be around for future generations. Instead of managing our ocean resources primarily for extraction we need to put conservation first.

In the Devonian Period, sometimes referred to as the "Age of Fish", nearly every major group of fish, including those extinct today, flourished. Theme: Oceans and Undersea Life by Lara Chapman and David Herring This unit can be presented as a school wide theme or for an individual class. It is not all inclusive and does not represent all that is available for classroom instruction where oceans and undersea life are concerned. The unit is divided up into sections allowing the teacher to pick and choose to fit their needs Focus: Students will study the oceans and seas of the world, the animal life that swims in them and the countries that border them. Grade Level: Primary (K- 5th) Suggested Objectives (Not All Inclusive):
1. Know how much of the world is covered with water.
2. Name the four oceans and the major seas.
3. Name the countries bordering the four oceans.
4. Know the difference between salt and fresh water.
5. Know the foods that we eat which come from the oceans.
6. Students will have a concept of environmental issues affecting the ocean and its organisms.
7. Know the food chains, life cycles and plant life found in the oceans.
8. Know how oceans/seas effect our weather.

Some of these are strictly pelagic, roaming the open ocean; some of the fish and mammals return to near shore waters to breed and nurse their youngs; some birds breed and raise their young on land, but spend most of their adult lives at sea; some birds fish at sea during the day, but return to land at night to sleep. Ocean Life: Mammals -Characteristics
Mammals are a group of vertebrates (animals that have a backbone). Certain characteristics separate them from all other animals: mammals breathe air through lungs, give birth to live young, produce milk for their young, are warm-blooded, and have hair or fur. They also have relatively large brains and a variety of tooth sizes and shapes. Marine mammals have adapted to life in the ocean. More than 100 mammals depend on the ocean for most or all of their life needs. Marine mammals have all the characteristics of mammals, but they have different appearances and survival strategies.
A group of walrus sun themselves on a beach (courtesy of NOAA).
A manatee cow and calf (courtesy of NOAA). Marine mammals are divided into three orders: Carnivora Sirenia and Cetacea . Within the order Carnivora are the pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, walruses), the sea otter, and the polar bear. Polar bears are closely related to bears like the grizzly, but are considered marine mammals since they have adopted a marine lifestyle. The order Sirenia is composed of manatees and dugongs (or sea cows), and the order Cetacea includes whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

Myrtle is approximately 60 years old. She is housed in the New England Aquarium's landmark coral reef exhibit along with 700 fish and two other turtles. Despite the challenges related to working with a turtle and the distractions inherent to working with an individual animal in an exhibit environment, a training protocol and an experimental design have been developed making it possible to test Myrtle's hearing capabilities.

Issues Fish and Wildlife : Shrimp Threats to Our Oceans Fish and Wildlife Beluga Whales Bocaccio ... Law and Policy Under the oceans are mountains higher than Mount Everest, canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon and the largest living structure on earth, Australia's Great Barrier Reef. One of Earth's most abundant and popular seafoods, shrimp contribute to the diets of cultures around the world. But shrimp nets scoop up more than shrimp: animals like sea turtles, sharks, rays and invertebrates fall victim to our appetites. In fact, for every pound of shrimp caught, about four pounds of other animals die as wasted catch. Shrimp Shrimp are crustaceans related to lobsters and crabs. They live in temperate and tropical salt- and freshwaters. While they can grow to be up to nine-inches long, most are much smaller. They are one of the most popular crustacean foods. Management of the shrimp fishery is a concern to The Ocean Conservancy primarily due to the size of the fishery and amount of bycatch caught and often killed by the most common shrimp fishing techniques, bottom trawling. While shrimp populations thus far have seemed to withstand this intense fishing pressure, other species of marine life cannot.

Issues Ocean Places : Prince William Sound, Alaska Threats to Our Oceans Fish and Wildlife Ocean Places Channel Islands, California ... Law and Policy Under the oceans are mountains higher than Mount Everest, canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon and the largest living structure on earth, Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Prince William Sound Bathed by rich ocean currents and ringed by towering peaks, dense forests and sprawling glaciers, Prince William Sound contains an astounding diversity of marine life, including fish, whales, seals, and birds. But this was also the site of the infamous 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, which spread over 10,000 square miles and oiled over 1,500 miles of coastline, killing more marine mammals and birds than any other spill on record. Today, over 15 percent of the nation's oil is shipped through the central Sound, and 100 million pounds of fish are taken from its waters annually. Key Habitats An intricate mosaic of habitats lines 3,500 miles of craggy shoreline. Reefs, seastacks, mud flats, eelgrass beds, wetlands, pebble beaches and kelp forests-all support their own communities of life. The kelp forests are particularly critical, providing spawning habitat for herring, which in turn provide food for other fish and wildlife, as well as human communities ashore. Wildlife A refuge from the stormy Gulf of Alaska, the Sound shelters and sustains a staggering abundance and diversity of life, including many rare and endangered species. These waters teem with thousands of tons of small fish, including Pacific herring, capelin, and young walleye pollock-the "bread and butter" species of the Sound's food webs. Cod, rockfish, sablefish, squid and five kinds of salmon cruise the Sound's waters, while king and Dungeness crabs prowl the bottom. Vast beds of clams and scallops carpet the tide pools and seafloor.
