A sample passport for one of the fish from Daliworld
By BBC News Online technology correspondent Mark Ward Imagine for a moment that the vast virtual space defined by the internet is a huge ocean populated by schools of virtual fish. Soon it could be. A Californian company is trying to create a cybersea that can support a population of artificial fish that live out their existence while swimming from one node in the network to another. The company is currently recruiting people willing to become part of the network that forms the artificial ocean. Fish and artificial Fish-based screen savers have been popular for a long time but now Pasadena-based Dalilab is planning to go several steps further by using the potentially vast resources of the internet to create an artificial ocean populated by virtual fish. Dali stands for Distributed Artificial Life and does not refer to the surrealist painter.

Ocean-Friendly Seafood
Americans love fish. Each year, U.S. consumers spend almost $50 billion on seafood. To most seafood lovers, there appears to be an ever-growing abundance and variety of seafood in their favorite restaurants and in their local supermarket. Contrary to the perceptions of most consumers, however, fish and other seafood are a finite resource. Rising consumer demand here and abroad is depleting fishing stocks around the world. Currently, two-thirds of the world's major marine fisheries are already overfished, fully fished or depleted. Forty years ago that figure was less than 5%. Ironically, much of the fish caught never makes onto the dinner plate. Almost one-third of the total world catch–over 27 million metric tons–is made up of "untargeted" fish, marine mammals, sea turtles and seabirds that are caught unintentionally as the result of unselective fishing gear and practices. The vast majority of this "bycatch" is discarded, either dead or dying. Certain fishing practices also damage marine habitats vital to fisheries, marine life and coastal communities. Bottom trawling and dredging destroy the fragile sea floor habitats that serve as living, breeding and nursery areas for many marine species.

In our times, political and commercial decisions are made, which can destroy developments of billions of years, in just days, hours and minutes. Some may think that changes in one drop of water don't change the 1,300,000,000 km3 of water on earth. COASTAL ISSUES
Coastline
- The total length of the world's coastlines is about 504,000 km, enough to circle the Equator 12 times. The apparent length of a coastline depends on the scale (length of ruler) at which it is measured. The coastline appears longer as shorter rulers are used, because more small features are included. Canada has the longest coastline of any country. The 1996 Canadian Encyclopedia gives the length as 243,797 km, including the major island coastlines while the 1997 Guiness Book of Records gives a figure of 244,800 km, including the islands. Erosion - As coastal zones become more and more crowded, the quality of coastal water will suffer, the wildlife will be displaced, and the shorelines will erode. 60% of the Pacific and 35% of the Atlantic Coast shoreline are eroding at a rate of a meter every year.

WWF's Ocean Rescue
FISH ALERTS: World's Leading Scientists Tackle Biggest Threat To Whales, Dolphins Life on Earth depends on healthy oceans - from coral reef communities teeming with life to mangrove swamps that provide a home for thousands of species. Our planet's oceans are in trouble and the plant and animal life they sustain are in jeopardy. As the global leader in safeguarding these marine ecosystems, WWF aims to achieve a bold new goal in the next 10 years: The creation of stable marine networks that encompass 100 marine protected areas worldwide. At the same time, we will continue our landmark efforts to end destructive fishing practices, stop illegal trade in marine wildlife, and reduce pollution on land and sea. WWF's Ocean Rescue also promotes innovative market incentives for responsible fishing and works to reform government policies that undermine the ocean's web of life. Listen to WWF Chairman, William Reilly, speak on the issue of whales becoming entangled in fishing lines and nets.

Part Two: Teeming with Life: Amazing Ocean Creatures
Background
Sea Life in Trouble
Despite the incredible adaptations of ocean life, many species are in trouble. The actions of people threaten life in the seas on many levels (see “Threats to Our Ocean” section) in the background of Part One). Here are some of the ways: Habitat loss The United States has already lost half its wetlands, and many of the remaining ones are threatened as well. Wetlands include saltwater and freshwater marshes, swamps, and bogs. Wetlands are where many marine species begin life, and wetlands’ unique ability to soak up floodwaters and to filter contaminants from water flowing to the sea makes them invaluable. Seagrass meadows, which support fish, shellfish, sea turtles, waterfowl, and manatees, are declining in most coastal regions of the United States. Dredging, disease, and toxic runoff take their toll on those ecosystems. Coral reefs are being assaulted on several levels. For example, overfishing removes species that feed on algae and that protect coral from being overtaken by the plants. Nutrient pollution kills the coral and species that live near the reef. In addition, diseases have wiped out reefs.

Patagonian Toothfish (Antarctic sea bass)
The Patagonian toothfish may not be the most beautiful creature you've ever seen but it is a truly remarkable fish.
Of the 20,000 known species of fish in the world, only 120 live in the Southern Ocean. Throughout the past 40 million years they have adapted to the freezing conditions by developing a special 'antifreeze' component in their body fluids. Antarctic fish are especially vulnerable to overfishing because most species take a long time to become sexually mature and are long lived.
The toothfish plays an important part in the Southern Ocean ecosystem around Antarctica. It grows slowly and to more than two metres long. It can live as long as 50 years and does not breed until it is at least 10 years old. It lives in deep waters (from 300 to 3,500 metres down) and is found on sea mounts and continental shelves around most sub-Antarctic islands. Like many deep-sea species, little is known about the Patagonian toothfish. It is known that it is part of the sperm whale's diet and scientists estimate that it comprises up to 98% of the elephant seal's fish diet.
The rapidly disappearing Patagonian toothfish is worth so much money in the marketplace that the fishing industry calls it "white gold".

Ocean and Oceanography:
A great body of salt water comprising all the oceans and seas that cover nearly three-fourths of the surface of the earth, and the scientific study of the physical, chemical, and the biological aspects of the so-called world ocean. The major goals of oceanography are to understand the geologic and geo-chemical processes involved in the evolution and alteration of the ocean and its basin, to evaluate the interaction of the ocean and the atmosphere so that greater knowledge of climactic variations can be attained, and to describe how the biological productivity in the sea is controlled.
The world ocean covers 71 percent of the earth's surface, or about 361 million square kilometers, or about 140 million square miles. Its average depth is 5000m or 16,000 ft., and its total volume is about 1,347,000,000 cubic km, or 332,3000,000 cubic miles!

Fish In Depth Analysis
California's Marine Life Protection Act
How Marine Reserves Will Help Preserve Ocean Life
This NRDC analysis of California's Marine Life Protection Act was written when the legislation was pending before the California State Legislature. On October 8, 1999, Governor Gray Davis signed the bill into law.
Introduction
Why Marine Life Reserves? Marine Life Protection Act
Introduction
Scientists believe that one important way to preserve biodiversity in the seas is to create networks of marine reserves where fishing is not allowed and pollution is minimized. Proposals for such a network in southern California's Channel Islands are now under discussion. These islands combine majestic underwater settings with an extraordinary diversity of marine life, nurtured by the complex intermingling of warm Baja currents with cold currents from Alaska. NRDC has helped persuade the California Fish and Game Commission to start a collaborative process to designate zones in the waters surrounding the islands where no fishing will be permitted. In the 1998 legislative session, NRDC helped usher through the legislature a bill to set up a network of marine protected areas, only to see it vetoed by former Governor Wilson. In the 1999 session, Assemblyman Kevin Shelley reintroduced the bill in the California Assembly as A.B. 993, the Marine Life Protection Act. The bill passed both the Assembly and the Senate with bipartisan support. With a new administration in California, a legislature lead by environmental supporters, and widespread support for efforts to ensure that fish and marine animals thrive, NRDC is optimistic that the Marine Life Protection Act has a good chance of becoming law in 1999. Nonetheless, as former Governor Wilson's veto demonstrates, the bill's passage into law is not guaranteed, so we continue our efforts to mobilize strong citizen support for marine reserves and for this legislation.

http://wings.avkids.com/Book/Animals/intermediate/marine-01.html
Marine Life page 1 Introduction Not all animals glide or fly in the air. Many marine (water) animals are masters of "flight" and speed under the water. Ocean, or water, environments cause these animals to adapt (change to fit that environment). Underwater Dynamics (bodies in motion) Most fish are too heavy to float. Some sink to the ocean floor and live there. Other fish have a built-in swim-bladder (like a small gas filled ballon) inside. This helps them stay off the ground and up in the water. Still others, like sharks, must swim all the time to stay up, because they don't have a swim-bladder. It is difficult to swim through water. Water is thicker than air. Fast fish have a fusiform body (shaped like a torpedo or rocket). Some fish are flat on both sides (laterally compressed). They can easily swim around coral reefs. The fish living on the bottom of the ocean are flat - both top and bottom. This helps them glide along the bottom. Fast moving fish have special features. Besides being shaped like a torpedo they can pull in fins not in use to reduce drag. They may also have a slimy mucous layer (like oil) that helps them glide through the water. Or they may have special skin control to reduce drag. Fins Fins are found in many places on a fish's body. There are side fins, dorsal (top and bottom) and caudel (tail) fins. These fins move the fish forward, help with turns and keeping balance.

ocean fish are currently modeled nonspatially, assuming conditions are uniformin the ocean. The ocean life stage model runs on a 30-day time step.
http://weasel.cnrs.humboldt.edu/~simsys/Chinook.html
Sacramento River Basin Chinook Salmon Model The Sacramento River Basin chinook model is:
  • Full life cycle, with sub-models for upstream migration of adults, spawning and incubation, juvenile growth and out-migration, and adults in the ocean. Multi-race, with each of the four major Sacramento River races simulated (fall, late fall, spring, and winter runs). Individual-based, with each individual in the model representing one or more fish. Multi-scale: Migration is modeled at a watershed scale, and spawning and incubation is simulated with multiple reach-scale models for each spawning area.
This model is being implemented in Swarm by Steve Railsback and Steve Jackson , as subcontractors to , Sacramento, CA. The project is funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Wim Kimmerer is the lead scientist for model formulation. Model development and coding started in 1999, with preliminary versions of the upstream migration and spawning models completed in January, 2000. Adult chinook salmon migrate upstream to spawn in our model. Complex and realistic migratory behaviors emerge from a simple rule. When salmon reach a tributary or delta junction, they choose a fork randomly (with probability weighted by flow). If they can "smell" their natal spawning ground because they are downstream of it, they swim upstream; if not, they swim downstream.
