Every year in early January, as part of a specialization on "Fisheries management in tropical countries", a one week intensive course is organized in INP ENSA Toulouse ( www.ensat.fr ) by Jacques Moreau (a "page personnelle" is available on the Ensat website). The course starts by assessing management problems of a tropical ecosystem from numerous aspects: agriculture, land use, fisheries, including various stake holders,... to show how a field study is carried out and data are collected from "scratch" in order to be in position to use the EwE approach. Then an Ecopath model is implemented and run. The final result is a framework and guideline to be provided to fisheries managers and other decisions makers for "development" of the region, considering fisheries as only a part of a wider process. At the end of the course, the students are invited to draw by their own master plan of fisheries management of the concerned water body.

Descriptions of Degrees Offered: Contact Us To Recieve Information By Mail Datasheet of Required Classes: Datasheets of Electives: (require Adobe Acrobat) General Description The University of Tennessee College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources has a distinguished program of Forestry. Forestry is the science, the art, and the practice of managing and using for human benefit the natural resources which occur on and in association with forest lands. Benefits are derived from the multiple resources of the forest: wood, water, wildlife, recreation, forage, and environmental amenities. Foresters are the managers of these resources. Thus, our principal instructional objective is to provide the broad education needed to deal effectively with the complex of forest resources. A minor in Forestry consists of 16 credit hours as follows: FWF 211 or FWF 250, FWF 311 and 10 hours from FWF 100, 312, 313, 316, and 416 and Forestry designated courses. Prerequisites will not be waived.

Conservation Biology
Curriculum for a graduate certificate in Conservation Biology
Rationale The purpose for a graduate certificate in conservation biology is to provide students with interdisciplinary training outside the boundaries of current MU graduate degree programs. There is no single graduate program at MU that effectively prepares students for the interdisciplinary nature of a career in conservation biology. The need for a certificate is driven by these factors: 1) a student's need to provide prospective employers with effective credentials in the field of conservation biology, 2) an employer's need to be confident that an employee has the skills and knowledge to handle complex assignments or tasks at the interface of biology, resource management, and public policy, and 3) MU's need to attract the best available graduate students, which we can only accomplish if we meet the student and employer needs. Program Description The purpose of the curriculum for a certificate in conservation biology is to go beyond existing degree programs that already provide students with the necessary coursework and research experience in their area of major. It is intended to help each student reach a higher level of competence in conservation biology. To accomplish this we will require each student to complete: Interdisciplinary coursework: 15 credit hours of coursework outside their area of major for a Ph.D. or 9 credit hours of coursework outside their area of major for a M.S./M.A., and Practical Internship: 160 total hours of an internship in resource management or public policy or both.

  • Saving Fish or Saving Fishers Defining Ecosystem Management Fishing for Sex-changing Fish Bycatch - ecosystems, populations, humans
Humans take over 80 million metric tons of fin and shellfish annually from the oceans-the largest harvest of wild biomass in the world. Can we count on the oceans to continue providing us with this resource? How much is too much? This series takes a broad look of the concept of sustainable fisheries, moving beyond identifying the problem to working on its solution. Local, national, and international speakers will address topics that cross a broad spectrum of marine conservation issues. Please look below for the seminar speakers and specific topics.
