GLOSSARY
Cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) are frequently encountered in homes and are common pests on domestic cats and dogs. Dog fleas (Ctenocephalides canis) look like cat fleas, but are rare in California. Sticktight fleas (Echidnophaga gallinacea) can become a problem when pets frequent areas near poultry. Female sticktight fleas firmly attach themselves around the ears and eyes of their host. Fleas on either cats or dogs in California are most likely cat fleas. IDENTIFICATION
Adult fleas are very small insects (up to 1/8 inch), so it is difficult to see a number of the characteristics used to describe them. These reddish brown to black, wingless insects are compressed from side to side so that they look like they are walking "on edge." They have piercing-sucking mouthparts through which they obtain blood meals from their hosts. Flea larvae are tiny (up to 3/16 inch long), hairy, and wormlike with a distinct, brownish head, but no eyes or legs.

FLEAS
The life cycle of the flea is similar to that of a moth - egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (cocoon) and adult. A newly hatched adult flea is unfed, small, black and aggressive: the larger adult fleas have had a blood meal and may be laying eggs on your pet. For every flea on your pet there may be hundreds waiting to emerge. In summer, a flea may be ready to hatch from the pupa about 7-14 days after it is formed. This hatching is triggered by movement. In a vacant house, a flea can remain dormant in its pupa for more than 18 months. Fleas will continue to hatch from their pupae after the pest control treatment, unfortunately insecticides cannot penetrate the flea pupal case. The adult flea will die after a few hours contact with the residual treatment - both on your pet and in the environment. Householders sometimes believe flea treatments are ineffective because the pupae are quite resistant to chemical treatment and fleas continue to emerge from pupal cases even after being treated. Ten fleas can potentially reproduce to 250, 000 in only 30 days. Latest research shows that adult fleas do not leave the pet to lay eggs. The white eggs are laid on the pet and fall onto the ground, carpet etc. The eggs hatch and small, blind larvae emerge. These larvae move away from the light, burrowing down into the carpet, cracks in the floor or soil. Here they feed on protein, such as flea droppings of partly digested blood, and moult three times before pupating. The larva changes into the adult in the pupa.

Fleas infest mammals and birds. They feed on blood. More than 2,400 species are known, worldwide, however only a few species feed regularly on dogs and cats. The most common flea species found on both dogs and cats and in our homes is the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis. Adult male cat fleas are only about 1 /12 to 1 /8 inch long (2 to 3 millimeters); blood-engorged females range up to 1 /5 inch long (4 to 5 millimeters). Newly hatched fleas are dark brown, while the color of older fleas tends to be lighter brown or slightly orange, as in activly reproducing females. Fleas develop by complete metamorphosis; from egg, to larva, to pupa (cocoon), and adult.

Fleas seem to get a 'bad press', which is hardly surprising as they are unwanted 'guests' on our pets or in our houses. They are or have been the vectors of a number of serious diseases including Bubonic Plague, i.e. the Black Death of the Middle Ages which killed one quarter of the population of Europe. However, they are amazing insects and as we like to celebrate the wonders of the miniature world 'warts and all' here on Micscape, this month we take a closer look at these fascinating critters. From " Ready for Spring and Summer " Episode DIR-120
Figure A
Insects and other pests can be a real hassle during the warmer months. Here are a few tips to help you minimize the intrusion from these unwanted visitors. A caulk gun ( figure A ) is very helpful in keeping pests out of the house. Caulk around as many openings as possible. Pay particular attention to door frames, foundations and windows. Keep all dry goods in airtight containers. Clean spills promptly. Residue from sweet drinks can attract ants. Wash your dishes regularly, and empty your garbage frequently to keep food waste from attracting flies and ants. New houseplants sometimes harbor insects. Keep new plants isolated from your other plants. Coping With Fleas Fleas can be a real problem in spring and summer. When the temperature and humidity begin to rise, adult fleas begin to emerge. To deal with flea problems, start with your pets. Use a gentle flea-control shampoo and work the suds well into the animal's fur. Then rinse well. Never use shampoo designed for humans on your pets. It can irritate their skin. Insecticidal soaps such as those containing citrus oils can be very effective in helping to control flea problems.

This module is intended to serve as a source of basic information needed to implement an integrated pest management program for fleas. Any pest management plan or activity must be formulated within the framework of the management zones where it will be implemented. Full consideration must be given to threatened and endangered species, natural and cultural resources, human health and safety, and the legal mandates of the individual parks. Recommendations in this module must be evaluated and applied in relation to these broader considerations.
Although there are over 250 species of fleas described in North America (Pratt 1957), only a few are commonly encountered by humans with enough frequency to be considered pests (Ehman and Story 1982). These include the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouche), the dog flea, C. canis (Curtis), the human flea, Pulex irritans (L), and the oriental rat flea, Xenopsylla cheopis (Rothschild). Other species, such as the rabbit flea, Cediopsylla symplex , the mouse flea, Ctenopsyllus segnis , the ground squirrel flea Diamanus montanus (Baker), and

URBAN INSECT CONTROL Eric P. Benson and Patricia A. Zungoli, Extension Urban Entomologists (For PCO Liscensed Applicators) FLEAS General Instructions: Prevention is the key to proper flea control. If you had a problem the past year, consider calling a professional pest control operator no later than the end of March to initiate a program. If not using a professional, homeowners should also begin their own flea control program no later than the end of March to avoid heavy flea populations. Proper control of fleas on pets, as well as on pet bedding and resting areas on the same day, is a must for lasting control. Vacuum carpets thoroughly with a beater-brush attachment to take up eggs and larval food source in carpet before treating carpet. Dispose of vacuum cleaner bag outside the house immediately. Vacuum at least twice a week until flea populations subside. Steam cleaning carpets will also help decrease flea populations, especially in the absence of pets. Concentrate treatment on pet and pet resting areas. In recent years, several products have been developed as pills, sprays or topical spot treatments. These treatments enter the pet's body and circulate through the dog's or cat's blood. When adult fleas feed on treated blood, the fleas die or are unable to produce eggs, thus breaking the fleas life-cycle. These products are available from veterinarians.

Common Health Problems:
The Battle of the Fleas
The flea is a hardy insect with a lifespan of six to 12 months. During that time, a pair of fleas could produce millions of offspring. Fleas have survived millions of years in a variety of environments. Some species can leap 15 to 36 inches high. That's equivalent to a man jumping over the 555-foot Washington Monument. All that may be admirable, but fleas on your pet or in your household aren't. Fleas can cause reactions in your pet varying from a mild skin irritation to a severe allergic reaction. Because fleas feed on blood, an extreme infestation can cause anemia or even death in animals. All cats and dogs, and other mammals, too, are susceptible to flea infestations, except for some that live in high elevations or in extremely dry environments. Whether or not you actually see fleas on your pet, they may be there. Scratching, scabs and dark specs, or "flea dirt," found on the skin can all be signs that your pet has become the unwitting host for a family of fleas. Fleas can carry tapeworms, too. If you notice small white rice-like things in your pet's feces or in the hair around his anus, your pet probably has tapeworms, which means he may also have fleas. In extreme cases, an animal may be lethargic and its lips and gums pale. To battle flea infestation requires patience and perseverance, so put on your armor and get to it! Because the life cycle of a flea is three to four weeks, it will take at least that long to completely rid your pet and its environment of the enemy. Different flea control products work in different ways, have varying levels of effectiveness and kill different flea stages (eggs, larvae and/or adults). You'll need to use a combination of products at the same time to be effective.

Of the some 2,000 flea species, most are parasites of mammals. Historically fleas have had a great impact as transmitters of the bacteria Yersinia pestis ) that causes the plague . Fleas are bilaterally flattened, commonly reddish black, and wingless. Fleas go through a four stage life cycle: eggs, larvae, pupae, and adult. The adults feed by sucking blood from the host. Slightly raised and red spot on the skin that itches is often the result of a flea bite. The larvae feed on debris and flea droppings on the bedding. Fleas normally require warm humid conditions to develop from larvae.
The adult female can lay up to 200-600 eggs (in a lifetime) that will develop into larvae in two to several weeks dependent on temperature, humidity, food and species. The larvae develop into pupae that then develop into adults in a week or two. All these stages of the flea life cycle will be found anywhere in the pets environment. Seeing an adult is indicative of a larger problem.
Fleas are amazing jumpers. For example, common fleas can jump some 33 cm high. The oriental rat flea can jump more than 100 times its body length.

Itchy or Painful Insect Bites
What insects cause itchy or painful bites?
Bites of mosquitoes, chiggers (harvest mites), fleas, and bedbugs usually cause itchy, red bumps. The size of the swelling can vary from a dot to a centimeter (half inch). The larger size does not mean that your child is allergic to the insect bite. Mosquito bites near the eye usually cause massive swelling for 2 days. Clues that a bite is a mosquito bite are itchiness, a central raised dot in the swelling, presence of the bite on a surface not covered by clothing, summertime, and the child's being an infant (because an infant can't protect himself). Some mosquito bites in sensitive children form hard lumps that last for months. In contrast to mosquitoes, fleas and bedbugs don't fly; therefore, they crawl under clothing to nibble. Flea bites often turn into little blisters in young children. Bites of horseflies, deerflies, gnats, fire ants, harvester ants, blister beetles, and centipedes usually cause a painful, red bump. Within a few hours, fire ant bites change to blisters or pimples.

Of all insect or arthropod bites, flea bites are among the most common. Children may be bitten by human, cat, or dog fleas (insect family Pulicidae Fleas lay their eggs in dusty areas, rugs, and cracks between floorboards. The eggs hatch and produce larvae that then form cocoons. The cocoons lie dormant and can live for up to a year. The adult flea emerges in response to vibrations from footsteps. This accounts for the unpleasant surprize people sometimes get when they occupy a house that has stood empty for a number of months. Once hatched, adult dog fleas can live for up to two months without a blood meal. They are more likely to bite humans if they do not have a dog around to bite. The bites are grouped in lines or clusters, often on the legs or ankles. If you suspect flea bites on your children, you may not find fleas on your pet. A more reliable test is to and examine the residue for fleas, their eggs, larvae or droppings. Your veterinarian can help you with this.

To keep your family and pets safe from fleas, here's what you need to know...
Reproduction: Fleas can reproduce rapidly at room temperature, making your home an ideal year-round environment.
Their need for blood: Fleas require blood to survive and reproduce. In the absence of a pet, humans become the flea's blood meal.
The threat of disease: Fleas are capable of transmitting disease to both people and pets fleas can carry typhus, tapeworms and other diseases.
Refuge: Fleas go deep within the confines of carpeting, rugs, upholstery and in pet bedding, making their elimination extremely difficult.
Natural protection: Fleas are naturally protected from pesticides during various states of their life cycle. Most pesticides only kill fleas in their larval and adult stages, leaving the unhatched eggs and pupae to survive, develop and reproduce.
