Kill those Fleas! Fleas love warm weather, and so do dogs. And the inevitable occurs: Just as the weather entices your dog to spend long, lazy days lounging in the sun, out come the fleas, hungry for a feast. Will the annual battle against fleas ever end? Chances are, this war will be eternal. "It's a long-term war, on battle after another," said James Noxen, DVM, veterinary clinical sciences professor and staff dermatologist at Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine in Ames. Ironically, part of the reason our pets probably will never be flea-free: Use of flea-control products forces reproduction of fleas resistant to them, said Dina Richman, an urban entomologist who specializes in flea control in the entomology and nematology department at the University of Florida, Gainsville. "The more fleas are exposed to these products, the faster they develop resistance," she said. "We are forcing nature to select the most resistant fleas because the ones that survive our pest-control efforts are the ones that keep breeding, and they pass on that resistance to their offspring." Eternal battle or not, you can win control over a flea problem in your home and on your dog, and do so with greater ease and speed than ever.

Figure 1 Ctenocephalides felis felis Flea infestations of pets and the home environment are a common occurrence. Fleas are responsible for the production and transmission of several diseases of humans and their pets. The flea that causes most of the problems is Ctenocephalides felis felis the common cat flea. In one study it accounted for 92 to 990f the fleas found on dogs and cats respectively.(1)
The flea passes through 4 stages in its life cycle. It undergoes a complete metamorphosis at each stage.(2) At any time, about 570f the fleas are eggs, 34% are larva, 8% are pupa, and only about 1% are present as adults. The life cycle can be completed in as little as 12 days or take as long as 174 days and is dependent upon the ambient temperature and humidity.(3) Flea eggs are oval, pearly white, non-sticky and about 0.5 mm in length.(4) The egg hatches between 1 and 10 days of being deposited on the host and falling off into the environment

Fleas
Fleas are small, wingless insects, whose adults feed on the blood of mammals and birds. They have mouthparts for cutting skin and sucking the blood of their hosts. The larvae have chewing mouthparts, feed as scavengers and usually inhabit the nests of their hosts. Adult fleas are flattened from side to side which allows them to walk or run among the hairs of their host. They are able to jump with their well developed hind legs to avoid danger. Fleas are capable of carrying and spreading human diseases such as typhus, and some species such as the rat flea sometimes carries bubonic plague. Dog fleas (Ctenocephalides canis) and cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) fleas are commonly found on pets, and the human flea, (Pulex irritans), thrives in unclean conditions.

white eggs worm-like larva adult Recommended Products are linked under control below Cat/Dog Fleas Order/Family: Siphonaptera/Pulicidae Scientific Name: Ctenocephalides felis (Bouche) - Cat Flea Ctenocephalides conis (Curtis) - Dog Flea Description: Biology: Cat and dog fleas undergo complete metamorphosis. After each blood meal, females lay four to eight egg at a time (but 400 to 800 total within her lifetime) on the host animal and/or in its bedding. The eggs fall into the nest and/or bedding of the host animal or wherever the animal happens to be at that time. The eggs hatch in about 10 days, and the developing larvae feed on the adult flea feces which contain bits of dried blood. Depending on temperature, they molt three times in from seven days to several months. When mature, they spin silken cocoons in which they pupate. The pupal stage lasts up to 20 weeks. The adult cat flea often stays within the cocoon until vibrations stimulate it to emerge. Development (egg to adult) requires from 16 days to a year or more. Habits: Adult fleas feed on blood with their piercing-sucking mouthparts. They typically seek a blood meal within two days of becoming an adult. Cat and dog fleas prefer these two animals but readily feed on other animals, e.g., racoons, opossums, rats, and humans. Adult fleas remain on the host animal throughout their lifetime but are occasionally knocked off the animal by scratching. Occasionally, they can be found int he pet bedding and resting areas. Wild animals nesting in structures can initiate indoor flea populations. Larvae are found in areas where pets spend most of their time as well in animal nesting areas.

Pesticides are available for most common household insect pests, but these potent chemical compounds may be more harmful to you and the environment than the pests.
Here are some natural, non-toxic ways to control household insect pests.
Ants Think of household ants as a tiny, well-organized army in search of food and water. The first line of defense is to remove the attractants: keep counters and food preparation areas free of crumbs and sticky spots. Cover the sugar and put the honey jar in a sealed plastic baggie. Cut off water sources such as drips or dishes left soaking overnight. If the ant invaders persist, try these simple measures:
  • Keep a small spray bottle handy, and spray the ants with a bit of soapy water. Set out cucumber peels or slices in the kitchen. Many ants have a natural aversion to cucumber.

Cockroach
Cockroaches are characterized by their oval shape, foul odor, and their status as household pests. Cockroaches are an ancient group, having changed little in appearance in 320 million years. Fossil records indicate that they were the predominant insects during the Carboniferous period 360 to 290 million years ago. There are many types of cockroaches including the American, German, Oriental, Madeira, and brown banded. The Asian cockroach began to cause concern in the United States when it appeared in large numbers in Florida in the late 1980s. All but the American cockroaches are introduced species to North America. Top
Ants
Ant colonies range in size from a few members to many millions of members. The majority of colony members are female worker ants that are unable to mate. Worker ants do not have wings and perform most of the work of the colony, including searching for food, nursing young, and defending the colony against ants from other colonies. Queens are larger than worker ants and are the only females of the colony capable of mating. Queens are born with wings, which they break off after mating. They mate with winged male ants, later using the sperm from the mating to produce fertilized eggs, which hatch to produce more worker ants and a new generation of queens. Aside from mating with the queens, males play no social role in colony life and die soon after mating.

    by Gizmo
(Some information compiled from Cat Fancy Magazine May 2001 issue) Meow, my name is Gizmo and I will be teaching this class so Welcome! Today we are going to talk about those dreaded parasites fleas and ticks. They are the nastiest things....don't you all agree? They make us scratch and itch and just feel awful. My fur gets all ruffled just thinking about it! Anyway, let's move ahead to the class. Please don't forget to take the quiz at the end for credit and Good Luck! There are many remedies available at the vet and pet stores that your humans can buy to combat these pests! These products range from topical applications to orally administered pills and liquid. Make sure your human gets the correct formula that is for cats and not dogs. This is so important. If we get the wrong formula it can be detrimental to us and possibly even cause death! The ingredients in these products fall into two categories: Insecticides and Insect Growth Regulators. Insecticides kill adult fleas only and ticks. Insect Growth Regulators do just that - they prevent flea eggs from hatching and prohibit larvae from developing into adult fleas. Used in combination these two ingredients provide the strength we need to fight against fleas and ticks. There are many different kinds of remedies your humans can use. You need to have them read the ingredients and then decide which is best for you. They may also want to consult a veterinarian. Here are a few examples: flea collars, shampoo, powders, topical "spot" applications, pills and liquids. All of these remedies contain different ingredients but all contain the necessary toxicity levels appropriate to kill fleas and ticks while guarding our safety.

    Facts About Fleas
Their bites are annoying and fleas sometimes carry diseases than can cause sickness and death. By Nev Macklin Some pet owners go for years without ever having a flea problem. For others, fleas are a seasonal worry. Still others, living in warm, humid climates must wage constant war on fleas to protect their pets (and homes!) from infestation. Until you have actually experienced flea infestation in your home, it's hard to imagine how this tiny insect can bring such havoc into your life. Yet historians recall the flea-borne "Black Death" (bubonic plague) that swept across Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe in the 14th century, killing (by some estimates!) as much as 1/3 of the world's population! What Is A Flea?
A flea is a small (1 to 4 mm in length), wingless, "jumping" insect a parasite that lives off the blood of a host which can be either human or animal. About 1600 species of fleas have been identified. Fleas are found throughout the world. About 95% of these species live on mammals and 50% on birds. Fleas have the ability to jump about 6 inches vertically and up to 13 inches horizontally and can attach themselves to both skin and clothing. Human flea concerns are twofold. Fleas bite and, for some pets and people, these bites are highly irritating to the point of causing allergies. Of even more importance, flea-borne diseases can sicken and (rare in the United States) kill both pets and their owners.

    (DIATOMACEOUS EARTH)
At long last a safe, harmless and very effective insecticide that eliminates insects is available. No longer is it necessary to use toxic poisons to control these pests. The use of INSECT STOP kills insects physically and is non-chemical. * * INSECTS CANNOT BUILD UP A TOLERANCE OR RESISTANCE TO IT. **INSECT STOP REMAINS ACTIVE FOREVER.** (unless it is washed away or cleaned up) INSECT STOP is a proven insect controller, repellant and killer of earwigs, ants, cockroaches, spiders, beetles, silverfish, bedbugs, fleas and grain insects, to name only a few. It is an all year round insecticide. What is Diatomaceous Earth? How does it worK? It is a non-toxic, safe substance made up from crushed fossils of freshwater organisms and marine life. Crushed to a fine powder and observed through a microscope, the particles resemble bits of broken glass. Deadly to any insect and completely harmless to animals, fish, fowl or food. Most insects have a waxy outer shell covering their bodies, INSECT STOP scratches through this shell causing the insect to dehydrate leading to eventual death. INSECT STOP has a list of attractants on its label enabling you to attract a wider range of insects which may not be otherwise attracted to a specific bait already added to prepackaged products. For example, ants desire sweet baits while certain cockroaches tend to be more attracted to starch products. INSECT STOP gives you the choice. However, 90 percent of applications do not require attractants.
