During the first three stages, most fleas do not live on a host animal. Adult fleas usually live on a host animal, but go from host to host as they are knocked off due to scratching. Fleas are controlled by destroying the adults and making breeding places unsuitable for larval life. Adult are destroyed by bathing with strong soap and by adding insecticides or petroleum.
