http://fca-alumni.org/
Welcome... to the Florida Central Academy Alumni web site, a site by and for those who attended high school at FCA between 1959 and 1983. During those years, the historic Mount Plymouth Hotel in Sorrento, Florida, along with its surrounding 45 acres, was home to students from around the world. The school closed in 1983, and the main building burned down in 1986. Florida Central no longer exists as a school, but it is alive and well in the memories of alumni. We hope this site will help you to remember your golden years there...in the land of the sun. Looking for someone Register with us!

In 1971, the first few brave girls attended. Their rooms were in the 300 building. Within two years, almost half of the 200 plus student body were female and living in the south wing.

SUIT SAYS MOUNTAIN PARK RELIGIOUS SCHOOL USES BARBARIC July 9, 2002 By Matt Franck of the Post-Dispatch Staff SUIT SAYS MOUNTAIN PARK RELIGIOUS SCHOOL USES BARBARIC DISCIPLINE FOUNDER CALLS EX-STUDENT'S ALLEGATIONS RIDICULOUS A lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court accuses a religious reform school near Poplar Bluff, Mo., of abusing its students with "barbaric means of thought control, humiliation, degradation and punishment." The suit against Mountain Park Boarding Academy says students are subjected to austere forms of discipline, denied outside communication and limited to two short bathroom breaks and as little as five hours of sleep a day. The suit was filed last week in Cape Girardeau on behalf of Arkansas resident Jordan Blair, 17, who attended Mountain Park last year and later transferred to Palm Lane Academy, a sister school in Florida. Blair, of Alma, Ark., escaped from the Florida school while on an errand with a school employee. The suit seeks an unspecified amount of damages. But Blair's attorney, Oscar Stilley of Fort Smith, Ark., said his main goal is to force the two schools to change how they discipline and treat students. The suit asks the court to mandate reforms at the school immediately. "That is the central issue: to stop this kind of mistreatment," Stilley said Monday. Mountain Park's founder, the Rev. Bob Wills, described the allegations Monday as "ridiculous" and said he trusted the lawsuit would be dismissed. He said the suit is based exclusively on accounts from one student with questionable credibility.

August 2000. Click an image to read its caption. The legacy of non-reservation Native American boarding schools can be traced to the ideas and efforts of one man, Captain Richard Henry Pratt. A cavalry officer who had commanded African American troops against American Indians in the west, Pratt developed his notion of "assimilation through total immersion" while in charge of incarcerated Indians at Ft. Marion Florida. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Pratt did not believe there were innate genetic differences in American Indians. For him, environment explained all of human nature. Using the specious analogy that slavery had assimilated African Americans, Pratt contended that non-reservation boarding schools could accomplish the same result for native peoples. In 1879, Pratt got his chance to test his experiment when an old army barracks in Pennsylvania was transformed into the Carlisle Indian School (a National Historic Landmark). With Pratt as both founder and superintendent, Carlisle became the model for federal Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) boarding schools across the Midwest and Southwest during the late 19th century. By 1902, there existed 25 federally supported, non-reservation boarding schools for American Indians across 15 states and territories with a total enrollment of 6,000 students. In Alaska, two boarding schools at Sitka and Wrangell were also created with the express purpose of providing manual and domestic training for a select group of Alaska Native children, those considered "the brightest boys and girls."
