The TeleCampus staff has been treated as a family since the organization's inception. This session will talk about valuable lessons learned, including the cost effectiveness of providing perks and a healthy environment for staff as opposed to losing them. Editor: Karen Cochrane 2002 Legislative Session ends without state budget or education reform package
The 2002 legislative session ended Fri., March 22, with the passage of a redistricting plan but without a state budget or an education reform package. The latter is a crucial piece of legislation that will, among other things, complete the transition of authority to the state universities' boards of trustees. A brief round-up of some important pieces of legislation with respect to FIU includes:
  • Senate Bill 1564:
Senate Bill 1844: This bill creates the Florida Technology Development Act, aimed at developing high technology industries in Florida through funding of "Centers of Excellence." The bill calls for the funding of at least two but no more than five such centers, which can be individual universities or a consortium of universities. The legislation creates a commission charged with establishing the guidelines for the program, as well as reviewing the proposals. The minimum award for the successful proposals is $10 million.
HB 1943 (Appropriations): This issue will be the subject of a special session, the date of which is still to be determined. Both the House and Senate are funding enrollment growth at a much lower rate than is customary and both fund the universities in lump-sum fashion regarding the different governance structure that will be in place. The Senate's budget includes funding for FIU at almost $7 million in recurring dollars. Equity was a priority for the University going into the session, and it is now a topic of conversation by leadership in both houses.

INCOME CHARACTERISTICS
Due to the nature of government and university employment, which call for a high percentage of professional and white collar employees, Leon County enjoys relatively high income levels, especially when compared to surrounding counties. Leon County also has the highest percentage of females in the workforce of any county in Florida, which also helps contribute to higher income levels. MEDIAN FAMILY INCOMES OF
