    Geography
The Florida peninsula, warmed by surrounding subtropical and tropical waters and cooled by the trade winds, is famous for its pleasant climate, abundant sunshine, and scenery. The NW of Florida is a gently rolling panhandle area, cut into by deep swamps along the Gulf coast. The St. Marys River in the northeast and the Perdido River in the northwest form part of the boundary with Georgia and Alabama. Much of the east coast is shielded from the Atlantic Ocean by narrow sandbars and barrier islands that protect the shallow lagoons, rivers, and bays. Immediately inland, pine and palmetto flatlands stretch from the Georgia border almost to the southern tip of the state. Central Florida abounds in lakes, with Lake Okeechobee being the largest. The

From Lewis Carrol, Chapter 9: The Man in the Moon, in Sylvie and Bruno Concluded Mein Herr looked so thoroughly bewildered that I thought it best to change the subject. “What a useful thing a pocket-map is!” I remarked. “That’s another thing we’ve learned from your Nation,” said Mein Herr, “map-making. But we’ve carried it much further than you. What do you consider the largest map that would be really useful?” “About six inches to the mile.” “Only six inches!” exclaimed Mein Herr. “We very soon got to six yards to the mile. Then we tried a hundred yards to the mile. And then came the grandest idea of all! We actually made a map of the country, on the scale of a mile to the mile!” Have you used it much?” I enquired. “It has never been spread out, yet,” said Mein Herr: “the farmers objected: they said it would cover the whole country, and shut out the sunlight! So we now use the country itself, as its own map, and I assure you it does nearly as well.

Changing Nature of Florida's Coastal Geography
Florida has undergone dramatic changes in the last few decades, from a state with low population density and a primarily rural economy to a relatively densely populated state whose economy depends heavily on tourism and services. Some of the most profound transformations have occurred in the coastal zone, creating needs for resource management that reflect the new geographic and demographic realities. Florida's coastal population has seen an increase from 4.8 million in 1960 to 12.8 million in 1990 ( ). This rate of growth is four times that of the U.S. in general, and is largely due to immigration from other U.S. states. Most of the immigrants prefer to settle close to the shore: seventy-nine percent of Florida's population live within the coastal zone ( Culliton et al., 1990 ). While the coastal population of the U. S. during this period has increased by 38% nationwide, Florida's coastal counties have grown by 169% ( ). Florida's coastal population increase has not been uniform: the Atlantic coast counties have seen a 175% increase, while the Gulf has experienced a 160% increase (

Florida Keys Location and Geography The name Florida Keys is restricted to the chain of about 60 Keys that extends from Miami Beach. The Florida Keys also have a coral reef. The western Keys are made of limestone. The growth that rises on higher ground is composed of tropical hardwoods and palm trees. The largest Key is Key Largo. It's about 30 miles long and less than 2 miles wide. Key West spreads over a small island about 3 1/2 miles long and 1 mile wide. It lies some 100 miles southwest of the mainland. It has sunny year-round warmth and it's shores are bathed by warm Gulf Stream water and the trade winds bring mild breezes. The offshore reefs still hold the sunken wrecks of ships long ago. Key West with about 18,000 people, was Florida's largest city in the 1890's. Today the population is about 24,832. In 1912, a railroad was built along the keys. Also, Key West became a very important port for trade with the Caribbean Islands. The railway was abandoned after a hurricane in 1935 destroyed many of the bridges between the islands. Since 1938, the US Highway 1 has linked Key West to Miami, 155 miles away. Many tourists use the "seagoing highway" to the island city. Hotels, motels, and other tourist facilities have been built for use. An aqueduct, about 130 miles long, was built by the federal government to supply badly needed fresh water to the islands.
