Officer Candidate School

Located in lovely Quantico, VA, OCS is probably the biggest step on the path to get the gold bars. Officer candidates attend either one or two six-week sessions or a ten-week session (depending upon the program they are enrolled in) before they can be commissioned. OCS is designed to screen candidates for the potential to be leaders of Marines. Throughout the course of instruction, they are challenged both mentally and physically and are evaluated on how well they demonstrate the attributes needed to be a Marine officer. Their final standing depends upon their scores in three categories: Leadership (50% of overall grade), Academics (25% of overall grade), and Physical Fitness (25% of overall grade). Once the candidate completes OCS, the only other requirement for a commission is a college degree. The Basic School

GOVERNOR BUSH AND LT. GOVERNOR JENNINGS ANNOUNCE WORKERS’ COMPENSATION REFORM
~Changes would improve business climate, lower insurance rates by 15 percent and increase benefits for injured workers~ TALLAHASSEE - Governor Jeb Bush and Lt. Governor Toni Jennings today announced comprehensive workers’ compensation reforms at the Florida Homebuilders rally at the Capitol. Governor Bush said part of creating a stable business climate in Florida requires reforming the state’s workers’ compensation system. “Florida’s current workers’ compensation system is crumbling under the weight of increasing cost, endless litigation and rampant fraud,” said Governor Bush. “Florida’s businesses simply cannot afford to pay the skyrocketing workers compensation insurance costs any longer. Without these changes, workers’ compensation costs will continue to drive businesses out of the state, and even worse, out of business altogether.” More Info A+ Plan for Education One Florida Just Read,

The Army is the oldest and largest branch of the Florida National Guard, with 9,951 assigned as of 31 January 2001. The Florida Army National Guard maintains 72 armories, and is present in 63 communities. The first muster of militia troops in the continental United States took place on September 16, 1565 in the newly established Spanish presidio town of Saint Augustine, Florida. The militia served under the flag of Spain for 236 years, Great Britain for 20 years, and the Confederate States of America for 5 years. Florida's Army has defended the peninsula and nation against the French, Indians, English and a host of others who have attacked the state. In more recent times, Florida's Army has served in the war with Spain, on the Mexican border, in two World Wars, and the Persian Gulf War. Individual guardsmen have also fought in the Philippines, the Korean Conflict and in the jungles of Southeast Asia. Under the federal mission, the Adjutant General has responsibility to plan for the mobilization and deployment of federalized National Guard units assigned to the state…to take federal funds and resources: administer, train, equip and discipline Florida units so they can report trained and ready to a CINC anywhere in the world

Military Science
The University of Florida offers instruction in the military sciences to students preparing for military service. The Departments of the Army, Air Force and Navy each maintain a Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) and provide staffs of military personnel for the instruction and administration of cadets and midshipmen. ROTC Scholarship Program The ROTC Vitalization Act of 1964 provides for college scholarships to ROTC cadets and midshipmen. Those receiving scholarships are selected on a competitive basis. The scholarships pay either the cost of tuition, books, fees, supplies and equipment or an amount toward that coverage (depending on the service) plus a monthly subsistence allowance of $150. Scholarships are offered for two, three and four years. Army Basic, Navy Basic and Air Force General Military Course Programs The Army and Navy basic courses and the Air Force general military course include four semesters of instruction. Non-U.S. citizens must receive department approval before enrollment. Cadets and midshipmen are issued uniforms and textbooks by their respective services and are held responsible financially for the care of such property and for its prompt return when directed.

Achievement gap smaller at Pentagon schools Schools on American military bases around the world have been an unsung success story. A recent article in Education Week reports that black and Hispanic students at the 154 Department of Defense schools overseasalong with 70 others operated by the military on U.S. soildo better than their counterparts almost anywhere in the United States. In the 1998 National Assessment of Educational Progress, black and Hispanic eighth-graders in Pentagon schools ranked first among their counterparts taking the test in 39 states and other jurisdictions, reports Education Week . African-American students outscored their fourth- and eighth-grade counterparts in math, science and reading. Although minority students at military base schools still lag behind their white and Asian-American classmates, the gap is smaller than in civilian schools. Despite their high mobility, students in Pentagon schools have other things going for them that help achievement, says Overseas Federation of Teachers president Marie Sainz-Funaro. First, there is no unemployment among the familiessince they are militaryand there is strong parental involvement in the schools, she says. OFT represents more than 700 teachers in Turkey, Bahrain, Spain, the Azores and Italy.
