The University of Florida marks its founding from this date. 1857 West Florida Seminary is established in Tallahassee. 1866 East Florida Seminary moves to Gainesville after the Civil War. 1870 Florida legislature passes "An Act to Establish the Florida Agricultural College" in accordance with the Morrill Act of 1862.
1873 At the proposal of congressman Josiah Walls, a former slave, and David Levy Yulee, a former slave owner, Gainesville is chosen as the site of the agricultural college. Ironically, the city is unable to fulfill its promised obligations and the site is moved to Eau Gallie (now part of Melbourne) in 1875. That site is abandoned after the defeat of Florida's Republican Party in 1877 before the college can open its doors.
1883 State legislature selects Lake City as the new location for the Florida Agricultural College. The college opens in 1884.

We continue to provide our teachers with unique resources from our NOAA and NASA contacts, including access to GOES satellite and space shuttle launches, free software and hardware, grant and workshop access for K-12 teachers, etc. Several of our teachers are participants in the American Meteorological Society's Atmospheric Education Resource Agent (AERA) program, which maintains a program identifying master teachers who provide the materials and training for integrating meteorological information into the K-12 science curriculum in their respective states. Many EXPLORES! teachers have also won high honors in local, regional, state, and national forums. The application and selection process is designed to combine a unique blend of novice and expert, veteran and rookie, so that each teacher has the opportunity to teach to, and learn from, the balance of the group. High school students who are graduates of EXPLORES! schools are now enrolled in the Meteorology Department at FSU as highly trained and highly motivated individuals well versed in the scientific method, and proving capable of doing outstanding work. This outcome is extremely important to the EXPLORES! program, as one of the primary goals of the program is to prepare students to better meet the technological challenges of the next millenium.

General Information The USF School of Music is an exciting place for study and performance in one of the most artistically active areas in Florida. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in performance, music education, jazz studies, composition and piano pedagogy. Instruction is given in all orchestral instruments (woodwind, brass, percussion, string), voice, and piano. Students majoring in music education may select an instrumental or a vocal specialization. Many students not majoring in music elect to complete a music minor, choosing from three concentrations: theory/history/literature, applied medium or composition. There are many incentives that attract music students to USF. Among these are a distinguished artist faculty; splendid ensembles that perform regularly at state, regional and national music conventions; an exceptional jazz studies program; one of the most complete electronic studios in the nation (SYCOM); and a cultural environment that boasts two professional orchestras, a professional opera company, a professional ballet company, and four of Florida's leading performing arts centers. For every music student, listening and learning opportunities never cease; for the advanced student, performing opportunities abound!

With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Bush had 2,783,346 votes, or 56 percent, while McBride had 2,132,185 votes, or 43 percent. It is said that it’s never too late to have a happy childhood. Well, it’s also never too late to go back to school - whether as a career change, or simply to increase your knowledge and expertise. We discover new aspects of ourselves as we study and learn. It has been said that one should learn something new everyday. In approx. 2400 B.C., the Egyptian Magistrate Ptah-Hotep said to his son: “Do not be puffed up because of your knowledge nor overconfident because you are a learned person. Take counsel with the ignorant as well as with the wise, for the limits of proficiency cannot be reached and no person is ever fully skilled.”
