Flouride Fact Sheet
What is Fluoride ? Fluorine is a highly reactive element which likes to bond with other elements. These combinations are often salts and the fluorine part is called flouride. Hence flourine added to water has commonly become known as flouride . Fluoride occurs naturally in the water in certain areas of the world and people in these areas exhibit mottling of the teeth (dental fluorosis). This often occurs in volcanic environments eg. Naples in Italy, Pilansberg in South Africa. The lethal dose of artificial flouride is 50 times smaller than naturally occuring fluoride. The fluoride naturally found in water is calcium fluoride (CaF2 ) as fluorine has a strong affinity to calcium. When water is artificially fluoridated sodium fluoride (NaF), sodium silicofluoride or hydrofluosilic acid is added. Because calcium bonds relatively strongly with the fluoride ion, the fluoride ions are much less available than in the artificially-produced fluoride. The artificial compounds are more toxic because they are more soluble in water and the fluoride dissociates from the compound. In the body this fluoride becomes the "most exclusive bone seeking element, owing to its affinity for calcium phosphate". Studies have shown that the lethal dose of NaF is approximately 50 times smaller than that of CaF2 (naturally-occurring fluoride).1

ABSTRACT
As stated in the NAEP Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Environmental Professionals, the "keystone of professional conduct is integrity..." This means that professionals must be responsible for the validity of their work, which must be conducted without "dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation or discrimination." They must not put professional judgment aside in order to twist facts and/or conclusions to give a client, or a superior, a desired outcome. Further, professional integrity does not stop when a report is signed. There is a continuing responsibility for seeing that a report is not misrepresented by others, or altered to change its data or conclusions. In 1997, the National Federation of Federal Employees, Local 2050 (the "Union"), representing all 1400 non-management professionals at the headquarters of the U.S. environmental Protection Agency (EPA), incorporated a modified version of the NAEP Code of Ethics into its Collective Bargaining Agreement with EPA. This paper discusses the Agreement and the need for further refinements of it, along with the event that galvanized this effort, viz. the November 14, 1985 Federal Register notice setting a health-based standard for fluoride in drinking water.

Main Common Problems
Dental Health Guide
Your child's first teeth will begin coming in between three and sixteen months (usually around six months). The two bottom front teeth will be the first to come in and this will be followed by the four upper teeth in four to eight weeks. The timing of the eruption of the first tooth is largely influenced by genetics, so if there is a family history of getting the first tooth late, then your child will probably also get his first tooth late. Your child will continue to get new teeth until he has all twenty of his primary teeth when he is three years old, with most children getting about four new teeth every four months. Children begin shedding their first teeth when they are around 6-7 years old, and this process is complete with the loss of the 2nd molars when he is about 11-13 years old.

Part 3 of 3 ( Part 1 Part 2 Backs Down In 1973, British Columbia was considering mandatory fluoridation. They gave the job of researching and reporting the topic to Richard Foulkes, MD. Foulkes then wrote a 2000 page report and recommended that legislation begin to make fluoride mandatory in Canada. Based on that work, Canada began to fluoridate. Then something happened. Little by little, Foulkes found out that the statistics that his researchers had based their findings on were largely falsified. It took Foulkes years to run down the truth, but by 1992, he shocked the country by backing down from his original recommendation:

Fluoride's Neurological Effects: studies show there may be grave implications for
Alzheimers, Dementia, Attention Deficit Disorder, reduced IQ in children Neurotoxicity of fluoride
Fluoride , 1996, 29:2, 57-58 (Editorial by AWB and JC) The August 1995 issue of this journal contained an abstract (pages 151-152) of an interesting paper by Dr Phyllis Mullenix and her collaborators.1 They recorded behavioral changes in rats after ingestion of fluoride, and found that the severity of the effect on behavior increased directly with plasma fluoride levels and fluoride concentration in specific brain regions. A reading of the full paper is well worthwhile. In their Introduction, after referring to the increase in dental fluorosis in humans after decades of water fluoridation, the authors comment: "One concern that has not been fully investigated is the link between fluoride and effects an the central nervous system (CNS).... Many years of ubiquitous fluoride exposure have not resulted in obvious CNS problems such as seizures, lethargy, salivation, tremors, paralysis, or sensory deficits. Still unexplored, however, is the possibility that fluoride exposure is linked with subtle brain dysfunction." The carefully designed animal experiment which they report revealed subtle but very real changes in behavior patterns following fluoride ingestion: hyperactivity after prenatal exposure, and cognitive deficits after weanling and adult exposure. Fluoride accumulation in important regions of the rat brain, especially the hippocampus, was found to increase as the drinking water fluoride levels increased. These effects, and the sex differences observed, corresponded to those observed in other studies of hippocampal brain damage.

New Greenhouse Gas Identified, Potent and Rare (but Expanding)
By ANDREW C. REVKIN
Scientists have found rising concentrations of a newly identified gas in the air that traps heat more effectively than all other known greenhouse gases, the dozens of compounds released by industry and the burning of fuels that act like a greenhouse roof and may be warming the global climate.
The synthetic gas is extremely rare, so far reaching concentrations just over one-tenth of one part per trillion of air, according to a paper published today in the journal Science.
But it still poses potential problems, the paper's authors say, because concentrations of the gas are rising quickly, the gas probably takes more than 1,000 years to break down and its source although certainly from human activity is a mystery.
"So far, there is far too small a quantity to be of concern," said William T. Sturges, an atmospheric chemist at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England, and the study's principal author. "But I wouldn't want to see it enormously increased."

Natural, Non-Fluoride Toothpaste
23 Brands! Hello, For years now I have been distressed to observe how brands of natural, and non-sodium fluoride toothpastes have been disappearing from the supermarket and drug store shelves. Only brands with fluoride are displayed. It is as if we are being denied the right to choose whether or not we want sodium-fluoride in our toothpaste. Me, I do not want sodium-fluoride in my toothpaste! So I have taken matters into my own hands, and I established this website to offer to the public every brand of natural and non-fluoride toothpaste on the market. And, unlike other websites, you don't have to search through pages and pages of other health-related items to find "toothpaste". It is the only thing we are selling! If you are not located close to a health food store or other outlet that sells natural, non-fluoride toothpaste, this website will be of service. My wife and I live in the mountains of Colorado, and the nearest store selling natural toothpaste is a 3 hour drive away. So we appreciate how this website can assist many people such as ourselves. Sincerely

Fluoride compounds which are put in water (fluoridation), toothpaste and supplement tablets (including some vitamins) were never tested for safety before approval. Recent independent research by scientists not associated with dental trade organizations has shown the following:
  • Neurotoxic and Lowers IQ
In 1995, neurotoxicologist and former Director of toxicology at Forsyth Dental Center in Boston, Dr. Phyllis Mullenix published research showing that fluoride built up in the brains of animals when exposed to moderate levels. Damage to the brain occured and the behavior patterns of the animals was adversely effected. Offspring of pregnant animals receiving relatively low doses of fluoride showed permanent effects to the brain which were seen as hyperactivity (ADD-like symptoms). Young animals and adult animals given fluoride experienced the opposite effect hypoactivity or sluggishness. The toxic effects of fluoride on the central nervous system was subsequently confirmed by previously-classified government research . Two new epidemiological studies which tend to confirm fluoride's neurotoxic effects on the brain have shown that children exposed to higher levels of fluoride had lower IQs.

    Fluorine
Fluoride is the ionic form of fluorine (F), which is widely distributed in nature. Bones and teeth contain most of the body's fluorine. Saltwater fish and tea are rich sources, but the main source is drinking water. Deficiency: Some authorities do not consider fluorine an essential mineral because a deficiency state, reversed by the mineral alone, has not been induced. However, the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of SciencesNational Research Council (NAS/NRC) considers fluorine essential for the prevention of dental caries and possibly osteoporosis. Fluoridation of water that contains less than the ideal level of 1 ppm significantly reduces the incidence of dental caries. Toxicity: Excess accumulation of fluorine (fluorosis)
