Mexico begins Listeria testing of U.S. poultry products
12/30/02 - The Mexican government recently established a Listeria testing procedure for "hamburgers, nuggets, cold cuts, or any other prepared chicken and turkey product ready for human consumption," according to a Global Agriculture Information Network (GAIN) Report released by USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service. The testing procedure will take 4 to 12 working days, but shipments will be permitted to enter the country prior to receipt of the final test results. According to the report, exporters should plan on this procedure being in place indefinitely. EU reaches agreement on GMO labeling
12/09/02 - The EU Agriculture Council reached a political agreement on the Commission's proposal to label all genetically modified feed and to extend the current labeling requirements for genetically modified food. The Regulation establishes a system to regulate the placing on the market and labeling of food and feed products derived from GMOs.     Food safety is important year round, but during the holidays it becomes increasingly
    important. During the holidays we generally prepare larger meals, leave food out of the refrigerator for longer periods, and overload our refrigerators. The discussion below takes you through a number of potential hazards in preparing and enjoying your holiday meals. By following the recommendations, you will have a healthier holiday season.
    Planning for your holiday meals
    When planning a holiday meal or party, choose foods that can be served safely under the conditions of your planned activity. For example, hot foods need to be kept above 140°F and cold foods need to be kept below 40°F. Temperature abuse is a common cause of foodborne illness. On the buffet table, keep hot foods hot with chafing dishes, crock pots, and warming trays. Keep foods cold by nesting dishes in bowls of ice. You can also use small serving dishes and replace them often. Never leave the food on the table for more than two hours. Don't plan to serve hot or cold foods if you can't keep them hot or cold. Good sanitation is critical. Because we are serving larger numbers of people and storing and preparing more food than usual, we have an increased risk for foodborne illness. Refrigerators are often overloaded. Therefore, poor sanitation in the kitchen can cause more problems than usual.
