How to teach English as a foreign language
Because everybody approaches from a different standpoint, this course is run on a one-to-one basis. Some people are teachers but don't know about language, other people are linguists but have never taught before. From wherever you start, this course can take you forward at your own pace, concentrating on the gaps in your experience. The trainer has been teaching English successfully, both abroad and in England, for over 10 years and has trained many, completely different people in how to do the same. The course can be as intensive as you want it to be, though one or two 90-minute sessions a week are enough to move you ahead quite quickly, provided you work at it at home as well. Spreading out the sessions like this allows you time to assimilate what you are learning and to stand back from it all and be creative. It is, therefore, much less stressful than the conventional TEFL course. The trainer takes you through what you will be teaching (i.e., the grammar and structures of English) in easy stages. At every stage you will have the opportunity to roleplay teaching what you have just studied to the trainer. Once you have covered enough ground, you start teaching real foreign students, guided and supervised by your trainer.

Professor to teach English as a foreign language in Germany
Bob Weissberg, a communications studies professor at New Mexico State University, has been selected for a senior Fulbright lectureship at the University of Erfurt, Thuringia, in eastern Germany. Weissberg will work in the Department of English Linguistics from September 2002 to July 2003 to help develop its recently established English language training and teacher education programs. As director of the International Intensive English Program at New Mexico State, Weissberg is accustomed to training international students in English and raising their fluency levels to the minimum required at the university. At Erfurt, he will develop and teach courses in English as a second language to students and to German teachers of English working towards advanced degrees. He will also consult with faculty at the university who are interested in teaching and making presentations in English. “I’m really looking forward to this opportunity,” Weissberg said. “This is a whole new area of professional development for me. It will be interesting to see how foreign languages are taught in Europe. I hope to bring many language teaching innovations back to New Mexico State.” Weissberg said the University of Erfurt was established in medieval times, but was closed for many years. It converted to a technical institute under the administration of communist East Germany. The university reopened in 1989 after the fall of the Berlin Wall. He said the school is working toward curriculum reforms in line with practices of western Europe and the United States.

How to Teach Your Child a Foreign Language
Compiled by Laura Broadwell
Have you ever marveled at people who speak a second (or even third or fourth) language as fluently as their first? Well, it may be that these folks have a special aptitude for languages. But the truth is, we all have the capacity to learn a foreign tongueparticularly if we start at an early age. If you want your child to be bilingual (or even multilingual), here's how to begin. Get Started Early Every infant is born with the ability to mimic the sounds of any language. But by the time a baby is about 10 months old, he begins to narrow down the range of sounds to those that he hears around him. So if you want your child to learn a second language, it's best to introduce it in the first year of life. If you are a bilingual family (or have a bilingual caregiver), have one parent (and/or caregiver) speak the second language to the baby all the time so he has a chance to become fully "immersed" in it. If you haven't begun the second language in the first year, it's best to wait until your child is about 2 1/2or until after he has undergone a "vocabulary explosion" in his first language, which generally begins at 18 to 20 months. Find a Class When looking for a class, make sure it meets the following criteria:

The Technology Modern operating systems and general-purpose word processors offer a veritable "embarras de choix" s far as foreign character entry is concerned. Here are some of the "workarounds" recommended and used by colleagues: 1. The "ALT Key" Method On all three UK platforms - PCs, Macs and Acorns - foreign characters can be generated in any application by combining the ALT key (on the left of the space bar) with single or multiple alphabetic or numeric keystrokes. For example, I am renewing my offer of target-language helpsheets with lists of PC ALT key codes for French and German characters. On the suggestion of one correspondent, a Spanish version is now in preparation. Please email me if you want them. I am particularly indebted to a correspondent who sent me a long list of 3-digit ALT codes for PC foreign character entry. I'll list the 3- and 4-digit PC codes at the end of this summary. 2. How to teach your child a foreign language
If you want your child to learn a second language, the earlier in life you begin that education, the easier it will be for them to learn. America has long been known as a melting pot of many different cultures and languages. Many American cities are so diverse, there are particular areas in cities that you can visit and never hear a word of English. And if you think your child may do a significant amount of traveling in his life, teaching your child a second language might not be a bad idea. However, learning a second language is not a simple task. It requires dedication, hard work, and a deep desire to further your linguistic education. bodyOffer(4066) Once your child has a firm grasp of the English language, in first or second grade, you can begin teaching your child a second language. They have reached a certain level of achievement in their primary language and are ready for more. The younger you begin teaching a child a second language, the more quickly he'll be able to learn that other language. Researchers say it's because young children like making new words and new sounds and are fascinated by language and ready to learn. When choosing which language to teach your children, consider which would be the most valuable second language for them to learn. Is there a language outside your native language that is commonly used in your city or town? Is there a country that your child might travel to regularly in which the natives speak another tongue? Further, you shouldn't be concerned that learning a second language will hurt your child's ability to learn the native language. Research has shown that they know the differences.

Interest in American Sign Language (ASL) as a foreign language has become, in the words of Gary Olsen, former Executive Director of the National Association of the Deaf, "an American ground swell." Many colleges and universities are beginning to recognize the study of ASL and Deaf culture as legitimate academic pursuits and are starting to accept ASL in fulfillment of their foreign language entrance and exit requirements. In several states, ASL is mandated by law as acceptable in fulfillment of high school foreign language graduation requirements.
More and more colleges and universities are accepting ASL in fulfillment of foreign language requirements. The University of California system (all campuses) will soon accept ASL in fulfillment of foreign language entrance and graduation requirements. Harvard and Yale are among some of the schools which are investigating similar action. Recently, we have witnessed tremendous activity by state legislatures to support the teaching and acceptance of ASL as a foreign language. Many states now recognize ASL as a foreign language for the purpose of meeting high school graduation requirements.
In 1988, the parliament of the European Community, noting that there are 500,000 profoundly deaf people in member states whose first language is their national signed language and not the dominant spoken language of their country, recognized as legitimate languages the indigenous signed languages of the twelve member states. Recognition and acceptance of signed languages is clearly an idea whose time has come on an international scale.

Experts agree that it takes a real live teacher who's a native speaker to do that. But some computer programs can help when kids are getting started with a new language. The best CD-ROMs for language learners provide fun, inventive ways to practice, and exposure to the sights and sounds of new words, new people, and new places. Many commercial language companies promise a super shortcut. They put together a selection of useful words, phrases, and dialogues that simulate situations a tourist might face. They have you listen to natives deliver the lines and then you repeat what they say. And that's it. However, such little scraps aren't enough to get to the core of a language, to develop a strong sense of how it works and feels, and to build the habits, skills, and strategies that make efficient learning possible. This Power-Glide language course gives you real language-learning-the kind where you actually internalize the language, and begin to use it as your own. What People Are Saying About Power-Glide
"Speaking and thinking spontaneously in a foreign language is challenging, but is an important goal that is hard to achieve with traditional programs. In Power-Glide courses, emphasis is not on mechanics and rote learning. This course aims to teach children in a manner that simulates natural language acquisition."
Stepanie Heese, reviewer, The Review Corner "Thirty years ago, in Guatemala, I used Dr. Blair¹s materials and they were the best I had ever seen. Now that I could ‘test’ the materials with more than 40 students in various classes, I am even more convinced that they are the best language teaching materials in existence today."
Herbert Horne, linguist, former teacher for Wycliffe Bible Translators, and current homeschool co-op administrator. "Most curriculum developers seem to have forgotten what it was like to sit endlessly in a classroom listening and pretending to be interested in boring subject material, but not Dr. Blair."

BS, EdM, MAT in Modern Foreign Language Education The Modern Foreign Language Education Program prepares teachers of French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Russian to teach in grades Pre-K-9 or 5-12. (Prospective teachers of other languages who are already fluent in the language and do not need to meet certification requirements may enroll in the EdM program.) The program offers two master's degrees and one degree at the undergraduate level. Graduate students choose either the MAT or the EdM program. The MAT program is designed for candidates with undergraduate degrees in a modern foreign language, but no education courses. In addition to four courses in the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures, students complete basic courses in educational theory and modern foreign language methodology. Upon completion of the program and Massachusetts testing requirements, students may be certified at the advanced provisional or standard level to teach the language in which they majored to children in grades Pre-K-9 or 5-12. The EdM program in modern foreign language education is designed for candidates who are already certified to teach a modern foreign language or do not wish to be certified, and who want to increase their knowledge of language and culture and improve their language teaching abilities. These students take courses in linguistic theory, language acquisition, literacy development, culture, and methodology. Electives may include modern foreign language courses.
