Welcome
The Forest Trust has been a consistent innovator in the field of sustainable forestry since its founding in 1984. The Trust views sustainable forestry as a fragile calculus between the natural systems of the Earth's ecology and those of the human economy. The central problem of sustainable forestry is to maintain the natural composition, structure and processes of forest ecosystems in the presence of human and natural disturbance. The Trust's programs deal with both the biological side of this problem and with the economic and social issues, since neither side can be approached in isolation. The Trust recognizes that sustainable forestry cannot be defined by fiat at the national level and that policy developed in distant urban centers frequently overlooks site-specific ecological realities. As a result, the Trust roots its programs in the field in the Southwest and has carried its learning and policy perspective into the national arena through two sponsored organizations: the Forest Stewards Guild and the National Network of Forest Practitioners.

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY?
In this section you will find a brief historical perspective and several short definitions of Sustainable Forestry.
A Historical Perspective:
As an outgrowth of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro, 12 countries, which contain 90% of the world's temperate and boreal forests, assigned representatives to develop sustainable forestry criteria and indicators specific to these forest types. In a series of meetings known as the Montreal process, forestry representatives developed seven criteria, each with a set of indicators that define the conditions for forest sustainability. These criteria are:

NATIVE AMERICAN FORESTRY AND THE SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY FUND
The 1987 World Commission on Environment and Development defined sustainability as the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Others have further refined this so that sustainable development is defined by the integration of economic, sociopolitical and ecological values. Applying these concepts to forest resources, sustainable forestry involves managing forests in a way that provides for our current needs while ensuring that the needs of future generations will be met. Sustainable forestry encompasses the material and non-material components of the forest, taking into account the spiritual and cultural values connected to the land with an overall goal of establishing and maintaining a healthy forest while producing quality wood and non-wood products.

SFF grants fall into five categories: Technical Assistance, Training and Capacity-Building, Scoping Visits, Forest Management Assessments, and Chain-of-Custody Assessments. All grants pertain to sustainable forest management and forest products manufacturing initiatives. First Nations staff and an external Grant Review Committee, composed of experts in the field of sustainable forestry, review all grant applications and provide direction for the Sustainable Forestry Fund. Sustainable Forestry
Since the late 1980s, questions about the sustainable management of the world's forests have led to the development of a number of forest certification systems. The goal of forest certification systems is to develop standards that ensure that forests are being managed with an eye toward protecting all the values that forests provide to society. Concerns such as sustainable harvest rates, the protection of water quality, and the continuation of appropriate levels of biodiversity, among others, are all factors in forest certification systems. Sustainable Forestry Implementation Guidelines:
Public Policy Goals for Sustainable Forestry on All Private and Public Land in the United States
PREAMBLE
The forest products industry has a strong record of stewardship on the land it owns and manages. Forest industry lands include some of the most productive forests in the world. Innovative programs to create habitats and landscapes, and to enhance the diversity of flora and fauna, offer excellent examples of how industry foresters employ modern forest science in the protection of locations that are unique in their geological, ecologic, or historic value. At the same time, these forests are meeting the needs of our society for homebuilding and other building products, as well as for printing, packaging, and sanitary products. Many companies have effective programs to extend their technology and stewardship knowledge to nonindustrial private landowners who own most of the forestland in this country.
PRINCIPLES FOR SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY
America's managed forests make a vital contribution to the nation and to the world by providing economic, consumer, environmental and aesthetic benefits indispensable to our quality of life. A vital forest-based economy provides wood and paper products, employment, and a viable tax base. Accomplishing sustainable forestry on private land requires a partnership among landowners, contractors, and the companies that purchase wood.
