Forest Ecology Home Canopy Structure Microclimate Succession Production ... Smithsonian Institution The Structure and Function of Forests in the Real World The Forest Ecology Laboratory studies the structure, growth and function of forest ecosystems, particularly the canopy portion of the forest, especially of deciduous forests. We study the exchange of energy and materials between the canopy and the atmosphere, the ecology of canopy organisms, and the physiological behavior of canopy surfaces. We hypothesize that the structure of the canopy influences the way forests work and are working to clarify the rules relating canopy structure and function. Most of our research is centered in a tall, mixed species forest on the SERC property, where we study the microclimate conditions within the forest as well as the transfer of radiation, heat, water vapor and carbon dioxide to and from the atmosphere. But we also study these relations in other forests, including different developmental stages of the core forest type, and forests in other climates. With the understanding gained from these studies we hope to make general predictions about how forests function to control microclimate and water balance, accumulate carbon dioxide, and provide habitat for organisms.

FORESTS AND BIODIVERSITY BIODIVERSITY IN BOREAL FORESTS: ECOLOGY AND DYNAMICS OF SPECIES IN COMPLEX LANDSCAPES University of Helsinki, Department of ecology and systematics Finnish economy continues to be largely based on forestry, and most of the forested land is under intensive management. The area of the remaining old-growth forest is much less than 1% in southern Finland and the extent of old-growth has become drastically reduced in the north in recent decades. Populations of numerous forest-dwelling species have declined or the species have already gone locally extinct. At present, there is an urgent need to develop forestry practices that help maintain biodiversity and natural forest functions in managed forests. There is also a need to assess how effectively the current conservation areas protect the species they are supposed to protect. The Forest and Park Service has recently initiated landscape ecological forest planning of state-owned forests. These plans, which are typically designed for regions of 10,000 to 50,000 ha, carry the promise of becoming an important tool for sustainable forestry. Unfortunately, the ecological knowledge on which these plans can presently be based is fragmentary and limited. The primary aim of this project, therefore, is to increase our understanding of the ecology and dynamics of forest-dwelling species in boreal forests, and thereby introduce the presently lacking element of population biology and ecology into the landscape ecological planning of forestry.

Email this page Ecology staff develop skills in ancient art It might be gruesome and it might be sad, but there is a useful outcome for some of those little bundles of fur and bones that we all see dead beside our roads. What might otherwise be left to rot is being restored as research tools so that State Forests ecologists can better understand some of the threatened and rare species that they care for. State Forest ecology assistants Bronwyn Ellis and Bill Chapman have undertaken specialist training from the Australian Museum in the age-old art of study skin preparation. "Its not as gruesome as you might think," said Bronwyn. "We only use clean specimens which have unfortunately become vehicle fatalities. We get all of our specimens as road kills found by our staff or from the local vet." The preparation of study skins is an art form that requires patience, skill and a lot of practice. "The skins are an important tool we use for training during wildlife schools and for use in public presentations," said Bill. "The study skins provide a unique opportunity for people to get up close and see the details of many species normally very cryptic in their behaviour. "The techniques involved in study skin preparation preserve the specimen and can last for more than 200 years if stored and handled correctly."

Princeton professor of ecology and evolutionary biology Stephen Hubbell, a founder of the project, is using the research to answer fundamental questions about what factors come into play in maintaining the diversity of life on Earth. From its very beginning, the project has yielded dramatic results, said Elizabeth Losos, the director of the Center for Tropical Forest Science, an organization within the Smithsonian that was formed to manage the research (http://www.si.edu/organiza/centers/stri/stri.htm). For example, the researchers discovered right away that tropical forests are not the stable, unchanging ecosystems that they were assumed to be. They are tree farms. As the World Rainforest Movement notes at http://www.wrm.org.uy/plantations/material/problem.html, "A forest is a complex, self-regenerating system, encompassing soil, water, microclimate, energy, and a wide variety of plants and animals in mutual relation. A commercial plantation, on the other hand, is a cultivated area whose species and structure have been simplified dramatically to produce only a few goods." As with any agricultural system that is resource intensive and based upon monoculture, most commercial tree plantations are environmentally damaging and not ecologically sustainable. Current plantation practices frequently incur substantial environmental costs including mining of soil nutrients, soil erosion, loss of native biodiversity, reduced water quality and disruption of local livelihoods.
