Conversion of Muslims to Christ in former USSR
By Jay Rogers Over the past five years, we have witnessed God's nation-shaking changes in the eastern European bloc and the former Soviet Union. Untold millions of people have come to Christ and many new churches are being established on a daily basis. Now we are on the verge of one of the most historic ingatherings for Christ's kingdom in world history - the beginning of the conversion of the Muslim people to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ! Islam is more than just a religion; it is a political power which has engaged in the holy war, or Jihad, in order to enlarge its borders throughout history. The hub of Islamic military might at this time is Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. In 1991, during the time America led an invasion to liberate Kuwait from Saddam Hussein, a little known civil war was raging in the former Soviet republic of Tadjikistan (a small country north of Afghanistan). To date 50,000 people have been killed in Tadjikistan and thousands of refugees have fled to Russia. This shake up of the Soviet bloc and some Islamic nations has opened some Muslims in this region to the gospel. The Church has been given one of its most awe-inspiring challenges in history.

The former Soviet Union, Cuba, and China: three countries where posters played an important political role and received a large amount of artistic attention. This is a selection of 145 political posters, famous masterpieces as well as equally beautiful but unknown examples drawn from the collection of the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam. 'The Chairman Smiles' gives an image of stormy political developments. The Soviet posters chronicle the Revolution of 1917, the following civil war and the attempts to build a new society, the Five Year Plans of the 1930s and Joseph Stalin's dictatorship. Attempts to follow an independent course dominate the Cuban posters from the 1960s, with special attention to mobilizing and informing the people and to spreading culture. The Chinese posters include not only a number from the period of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), with the glorification of Mao Zedong, idyllic scenes in agricultural communes and sharp attacks on political opponents, but also extremely rare posters from circa 1949 to the early 1960s, with the establishment of the People's Republic and the campaign for the Great Leap Forward . There are also posters from the 1980s and early 1990s, the period of Deng Xiaoping and the economic modernization.

After the USSR: BELARUS
More International Mail.
As indicated on page 2, separate 'foreign' rates evolved for former USSR countries (CIS), and for the rest of the world (ROW).
The rate for CIS countries remained at 1 rouble until at least January 1993, but was by June of that year. In January and June 1994 the rate was 120 roubles , at least to Russia, though a series of covers to Kazakstan in March shows a 180r rate with a violet TP mark . Three instances of franked [metered] mail to Ukraine from August to December 1994 show a 90r rate

Another consequence of the break-up of the USSR was that all the former constituent republics now had the status of 'foreign' countries. This meant that postal markings, including registration marks should appear in the Latin alphabet , as for the rest of the world, rather than Cyrillic as before.
No further instances have been found of postal stationery with revaluation overprints on mail to CIS countries, although a 600r air mail PSE was produced in 1993 (see below).

HISTORY
THE EURASIAN PATENT ORGANIZATION
Due to the termination of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics by the Resolution of the USSR State Council of November 14, 1991, the ministries and other bodies of the state management, including the USSR Gospatent, were abolished. The USSR Gospatent stopped performing its functions from December 1, 1991, due to which an uncertain situation was created in the field of industrial property protection both in the Russian Federation and in the other states - Republics of the former USSR. One of the main reasons for that uncertainty was the termination, in the CIS States, the legislative acts of the former USSR and, in particular, those on the legal protection of inventions, industrial designs and trademarks. By that time the single patent space was broken. In the territory of the independent States (subjects of the former USSR) an unfavorable situation was formed in respect of the invention activity, the creation of new kinds of equipment, goods, the implementation of new technologies, both domestic and foreign ones. The main lines for going out of the emerged crisis in the field of industrial property protection were: - establishment of an interstate system for the protection of industrial property;

After the declaration of independence of Ukraine in August of 1991, the telecommunication network of the former USSR in the territory of Ukraine completely passed to the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Communications of Ukraine. Telecommunication sub-field in Ukraine like in all former USSR was far behind the highly developed countries, both by technical level and by the level of meeting demands for telecommunication services. Nearly all telecommunication trunk lines were analogue and used exclusively metallic cables. Telecommunication equipment was out-of-date and behind the actual state of technical development for dozens of years. Ukraine took the sixth place among the republics of the former USSR by the main communication development indicators. Ukrainian subscribers could connect with other countries only through the Moscow switchboards and telegraph offices.

THE BACKGROUND THE PEOPLE For Peter the Great of the Czarist Russian Empire, and after him the leaders of the former Soviet Union dreamt of access to the warm water of the Persian Gulf. They constantly schemed and interfered in Iran and Afghanistan's internal affairs and even waged wars in hopes of securing themselves some kind of passage to the Persian Gulf. Today, almost a century later, this dream has come true but in ways that neither Peter the Great nor Khrushchev would have ever imagined. The entire region was once part of the Persian Empire, and that is why the Persian language is spoken throughout Tajikistan and parts of Uzbekestan and Turkmenistan. These same territories were first invaded by the Moslem Arabs, and that is how they all share the Islamic faith, next they were all invaded by Gengis Khan and his tribe of Mongols who imposed and left behind some of their culture which is now embedded in the heritage of each country. Despite periods of hostility, the irrefutable historical bonds of religion, mutual heritage and experiences, as well as speaking the same language are now manifested in an atmosphere of friendliness, understanding and even kinship among the people of Iran and its northern neighbors. The prevailing atmosphere is quite similar to the situation between East and West Germany after fall of the Western Iron Curtain.

UZBEKISTAN, one of the independent CIS republics from 1990, formerly a U.S.S.R. republic in Soviet Central Asia. The Jews in Uzbekistan were affiliated with two communities: (1) the ancient one, the Jews of Bukhara, who speak a Tajiki-Jewish dialect; (2) the new one, of Eastern European origin. According to their tradition, the Bukharan Jews emigrated from Persia at the time of the persecutions of King Peroz (458–485), while some consider themselves as descendants of the exiles of Samaria, on the assumption that "Habor" (II Kings 17:6) is Bukhara. Anthropological examinations undertaken by L. V. Usbanin in 1926–29 proved that they originated in the Middle East (of the pure Armenoid type), although there is no information on their exact non-Jewish origin. Precise information on the spiritual works of the Jews of Uzbekistan is, however, only available from the 14th century onward. Jews of Uzbekistan emigrated to Khazaria and China because of their location at the crossroads of the caravans that traveled there. The principal traffic between the Muslim world and Itil (Atil), the capital of Khazaria, passed through northern Uzbekistan, and the information on "many Jews who came to the king of the Khazars from the towns of the Muslims" (the author al-Masudi of the tenth century) and the Jews who came "from Khurasan and strengthened the hands of the inhabitants of the country" (the anonymous "Cambridge Document") refers essentially to the Jews of Uzbekistan, which was considered as an annexed territory of Iranian-Eastern Khurasan.

History of Cospas-Sarsat This satellite system was initially developed under a Memorandum of Understanding among Agencies of the former USSR, USA, Canada and France, signed in 1979. Following the successful completion of the demonstration and evaluation phase started in September 1982, a second Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 5 October 1984 by the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) of France, the Department of National Defence (DND) of Canada, the Ministry of Merchant Marine (MORFLOT) of the former USSR and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the USA. The System was then declared operational in 1985. On 1 July 1988, the four States providing the space segment signed the International Cospas-Sarsat Programme Agreement which ensures the continuity of the System and its availability to all States on a non-discriminatory basis. In January 1992, the Government of Russia assumed responsibility for the obligations of the former Soviet Union. A number of States, Non-Parties to the Agreement, have also associated themselves with the Programme. Through their association with the Programme, the States can contribute ground receiving stations which enhance Cospas-Sarsat distress alerting capabilities, and/or participate in international Cospas-Sarsat meetings dedicated to the world-wide co-ordination of System operations and Programme management.
