This document is intended to give an informal overview of the Forth programming system and perhaps more importantly, the method and philosophy of programming in Forth. It illustrates the language's history, most prominent features, usage, etc. We also describe the most common implementation method (based on the Poly Forth system from FORTH, Inc.

    2. History
The first program to be called Forth was written in about 1970. The first complete implementation was used in 1971 on a DEC PDP-11 for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's 11-meter radio telescope in Arizona. This system was responsible for pointing and tracking the telescope, collecting data and recording it on magnetic tape, supporting an interactive graphics terminal on which an astronomer could analyse previously recorded data. The multi-tasking nature of the system allowed all these function to be performed concurrently, without timing conflicts or other interference. The system was so useful that astronomers from all over the world began asking for copies. Its use spread rapidly and in 1976 Forth was adopted as a standard language by the International Astronomical Union.

    Misty Beach Forth
    What is Misty Beach Forth?
Misty Beach Forth is an implementation of the Forth programming language written in Java. Because it is written in Java, the Misty Beach Forth interpreter can be embedded in a WWW HTML page and launched as an applet. The applet appears below
Why was Misty Beach Forth created?
Misty Beach Forth was created to demonstrate that just about any programming language can be implemented in Java without suffering an unacceptable performance penalty. Java implementations already exist for languages without explicit pointers (Java implementations of Ada, Lisp, Scheme, BASIC, Rexx, and Python already exist. An Eiffel implementation is on-the-way). These languages all fit the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) fairly well because of their lack of pointers. Forth does not fit the JVM well because Forth is built on pointers, much like C. I hope that the combination of these other languages, plus Misty Beach Forth, provides a compelling argument that any programming language can be implemented either in Java or on top of the JVM. I think the ability to implement other languages in Java is important for several reasons:
    • Java as a programming language is not the final step in programming language evolution. As good as it is, we will eventually have better languages. It would be nice if those other languages could be implemented on top of the JVM, too.

Forth has been a recognized programming language since the 1970's. ColorForth is a redesign of this classic language for the 21st century. It also draws upon a 20-year evolution of minimal instruction-set microprocessors. Now implemented on modern PCs, it runs stand-alone without an operating system. Applications are recompiled from source with a simple optimizing compiler.

This distinction between control and data minimizes the cost of subroutine calls. As a result, Forth code is typically highly factored into many tiny subroutines, called words. Referencing a word causes its code to be executed. These simple words are easily and thoroughly tested by typing them on the command line. The Edit/Compile/Test sequence is extremely fast, boosting programmer productivity. A philosophy of

I recently purchased a new home computer. Since it is primarily intended to be a game computer for the family, it has Win98 installed on it. Not to fear, I still use Linux (these web pages are maintained on my Linux box). The down side, of course, is that Win98 sucks. On the plus side, I am able to do more Win32Forth programming at home instead of during my lunch hour at work. So I have had a chance to update things a bit again. In particular I have added some information on using the new classes and class extensions that come with the latest version of Internet Explorer. With the help of several people, I also found a problem using these examples when turnkeying an application under Win95. As part of the troubleshooting process Tom Zimmer made some suggestions for improving my code. I have updated my class libraries to hopefully address the shortcomings. The updated libraries are discussed here I also came across a neat program that allows interactive testing of the common controls and what effect the various flags and messages do. I recently had a chance to play with an evaluation version of SwiftForth from Forth, Inc.

    PROGRAMMING POWER
    Palm programming with Quartus Forth
    By Mark Lawson
When most people start looking at programming their Palm devices, they think of programming in the C or C++ programming languages. However, there are alternatives for the adventurous or curious, or those like me, who never really got along with C. I've spent the last few weeks looking at doing a project using Quartus Forth, an ANSI compliant, on-board, Forth compiler for Palm devices. It's a strange language by normal standards, but has proven itself well worth the look. In this article I can only really scratch the surface, but I hope to give you a taste for what it can do. By the way, when we say "onboard", this means you can actually program in Quartus Forth right on your Palm device. Bits of history
Charles Moore invented Forth. He named it FORTH because, in his mind, it represented the fourth generation of programming languages. So why, you might ask, wasn't it named FOURTH? Was it just that Moore couldn't spell? Actually, the reason gives an interesting insight into computer history. FORTH was so named (without the U) because the operating system Moore was using at the time only supported five characters in file names. Adding the U would have pushed it to a sixth character. And so it because FORTH instead of FOURTH. Unlike most computer languages of the time, the name FORTH wasn't an acronym. It was its own word. As such, rather than spelling it out in all upper case, FORTH was eventually treated like other proper names and presented as "Forth".
