But whether you're flipping fish or burgers, summer is no time to relax when it comes to food safety. It's not clear whether picnicking and backyard cookouts are to blame, but according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, there is usually an increase in cases of food-borne illnesses between May and September. Here are some timely tips to keep summer foods safe: Make sure ground beef is thoroughly cooked; undercooked hamburger can be a source of the deadly bacterium E. coli. It's okay to grill steaks medium or even medium rare, with undercooked meat on the inside. It's the surface of the meat that can be contaminated with bacteria, and the surface gets thoroughly cooked when it is seared on the grill, says Buford Mays of Publix supermarket. Chicken, on the other hand, should be thoroughly cooked until juices run clear, and the National Pork Producers Council recommends using a meat thermometer to make sure pork is cooked to a temperature of at least 155 degrees.

Basically, you're going to be making a 9x11 inch cake (9x13 would work too), covering it with white icing and then garnishing it with blueberries and raspberries so it looks like a flag. The type of cake you use can be whatever you prefer here are a few suggestions. Version 1 - White Cake: store bought White cake mix (chocolate cake mix works too for all you chocolate lovers) store bought vanilla icing pint of blueberries and pint of raspberries, washed Prepare cake according to package directions. Let cool completely and remove from the pan onto a serving tray. (you could just serve it in the pan if you like) Kimberly (another viewer) adds the following tip : "P.S. I found it easier to remove the cake in one piece from the pan when I buttered the bottom of the pan and sprinkled on flour before putting the batter in." Ice the cake with vanilla icing. Decorate with blueberries and raspberries so it looks like a flag. Version 2 - No Bake Cheese Cake: Very easy for kids to make there's no baking or cooking involved!! Make 1 day in advance so it has time to firm up.
