History and Government
History:
The 18th century was a period of great colonial expansion, and France again became involved in conflicts with England, this time over their possessions in the New World. The reign of Louis XV (1715-74) was in general a time of great prosperity in France, but the age also witnessed a widening gap between rich and poor. The inequality of the taxation system (in particular the aristocratic and clerical exemption from the taille (tax)), the lack of political representation for the increasingly wealthy middle class and the inefficiency and profligacy of central government were but three of the underlying causes of the French Revolution of 1789 which overthrew Louis XVI.
Parti Socialiste Front National (FN) leader Jean-Marie le Pen. There has always been an extreme right current in post-war French politics, from the Poujadiste movement of the 1950s, through the post-imperial

From Brazil to France, the origins of samba
    The origins
As shown in the definitions , samba exists since many years in Brazil. At first it was a music coming from the African slaves' rhythm mixture; it has been emerging since then as one of the main popular musical streams of Brazil. The word has actually an African origin: in the Quimbundo language "s e mba" means "navel bump" (Quimbundo is the language of the Bantus brought to Brazil from the area that became Angola). More about this topic:
    • , Michel Philippot, 1983 (text in French).
    Samba and carnaval
Samba became "the" carnival music around 1930. It was forbidden untill then, because of its obscenity, brutality and violent notoriety. The first samba schools were actually small groups with no more than 50 persons parading to the percussion sound, without specific costumes. These groups, also called "blocos" have been showed increasingly daring ideas and imagination. The first one bloco in 1928 was "Deixa Falar", in a district of Rio de Janeiro called Estacio. In a very short time, these parades went into well organized competitions. The first of them held in 1932 and was won by Mangueira. In 1935 samba schools were officially registered as Gremio (recreative clubs). SambaÕs rhythmic and melodic parts and its frenetic dance, developed and took shape in this great popular communal party that is carnival, through the rhythmic and melodic parts, and through the frenetic dance that goes with. It was then a way for all to express themselves and to unwind, whatever their social condition.

Tertu France : History I n 1986, in order to exploit in a profitable and original way an hugeforest estate situated at Villedieu les Bailleul in Normandy (France), Gwénaëlle and Jacques de MAUSSION founded the BOIS DE TERTU company, which has since become one of the most dynamic companies in the region. Specialized originally in the manufacturing of milled timber fencing, BOIS DE TERTU, has equipped numerous stud farms and horse-riding centres mainly in the Orne, Calvados and greater Paris, regions of France. Today, the company designs and manufactures a wide range of timber products. Selling mainly to local authorities, this range of environmentally friendly products provides a perfect response to their concern to protect the environment whilst favouring the use of timber as the material for their street furniture and equipment for open spaces. With this perspective in mind, BOIS DE TERTU has now embarked upon the diversification of their business and are tackling the road safety market. In 1992, thanks to the development of the first mixed wood and steel guardrail, approved by the French Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the company successfully positioned itself on the national highway equipment market. Attractive, easy to install and compliant with the current safety standards, this new concept was an immediate success with the public authorities and public works companies concerned.

These mysterious creations were admired by the Celtic Gauls , who arrived from the east around 600 BC. Gauls traded and co-existed peacefully with the Greek colonists who settled during the 7th century BC at Massilia (modern day Marseille ). In a clever substitution of vowels, Rome made Provence a province in 125 BC and quickly conquered the rest of the South. Fierce resistance from France's northern Gauls kept the Romans out of their territory until Julius Caesar's victory at Alesia in 52 BC. By the time Rome itself fell in AD 476, Gaul had suffered Germanic invasions for centuries. While many of the Gothic tribes plundered and passed on, the Franks eventually dominated Gaul. Around the 6th century BC, they were joined by the region's first wave of Celts. Julius Caesar conquered the region in 56BC, and it remained in Roman hands until the 5th century AD. Following the departure of the Romans, a second wave of Celts - driven from what is now Britain and Ireland by the Anglo-Saxon invasions - crossed the Channel and settled in Brittany. In the 5th and 6th centuries, the region was gradually Christianized by Celtic missionaries, after whom many Breton towns (eg. Saint Malo and Saint Brieuc) are named. Over the centuries, Brittany has retained a separate regional identity and has become far less assimilated into the French mainstream than most areas of the country. Recently, there has been a drive for cultural and linguistic renewal, an stronger ties have been established with the Celtic cultures of Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Cornwall and Galicia in Spain.

The book tells tales of great solo rides, amazing fortitude, terrible misfortune, and triumph over the odds from the race's remarkable history, which began in July 1903. Within a few years, the Tour was taking the riders across the mountains of the Alps and Pyrenees and they had to carry out their own repairs, find their own food and drink, and ride without support - a far cry from today's sophisticated organisation. Combining extensive research with a pacey narrative style, Graeme Fife paints a colourful and memorable picture of the men whose exploits have given the Tour an enduring fascination. Named as one of the top five sports books of 1999
