In addition to the fact of their ocean-wide distance from the mother country, the colonies felt themselves less dependent militarily on the British by the end of the wars; they became most concerned with their own problems and put greater value on their own institutions. In other words, they began to think of themselves as American rather than British. The Delaware Indians, also called the Lenape, originally lived along the Delaware River in New Jersey. They speak a form of the Algonquian Indian language and are thus related to the Miami Ottawa , and Shawnee Indians. The Delawares are called "Grandfathers" by the other Algonquian tribes because they believe them to be the oldest and original Algonquian nation. As British colonists came to North America, the Delawares fled westward from the land-hungry Europeans. While trying to escape the British colonists, the Delawares encountered the Iroquois Indians, who proceeded to conquer the Delawares and drive them further west. Some Delaware Indians came to live in eastern Ohio along the Muskingum River , while others settled in northwestern Ohio along the Auglaize River . Once in Ohio, the Delawares grew into a powerful tribe that could resist the further advances of the Iroquois. Upon arriving in the Ohio Country , the Delawares formed alliances with Frenchmen engaged in the fur trade . The French provided the natives with European cookware and guns, as well as alcohol, in return for furs. This alliance would prove to be tenuous at best, as French and English colonists struggled for control of the Ohio Country beginning in the 1740s. As one European power gained control of the area the Delawares chose to ally themselves with the stronger party. This held true until the

    Introduction
If you have not read Strauss and Howe's book " Generations " (or their later book " The Fourth Turning ") I'll try to summarize its main ideas. Strauss and Howe hypothesize that all of society is unfolding on a regular cyclic basis. Specifically, this cycle repeats itself every four generations (80 to 90 years) or so. They further contend that each of the four generations within each cycle has a very distinct personality. These personality types repeat, revealing apparent social similarities from one cycle to the next. S&H, in their books, use the United States as an example and trace several cycles of American Society from this perspective. While I don't believe it is a mathematically precise discipline, I think it is a fascinating concept and it may have real potential in helping to understand the tides of history. If you have read "Generations" I invite you to email me and share your thoughts. We may have the key, don't you think? Let's see what history may have in store for us.

, the American phase of Europe's Seven Years' War, a series of battles between Great Britain and the colonists against the French and their Indian allies. Highlights of the war included the defeat and death of Gen. Edward Braddock at Fort Duquesne ; the capture of Louisburg by Gen. Sir Jeffrey Amherst ; the British victories at Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point, and at Quebec, where both the British and French commanders, James Wolfe and the Marquis de Montcalm, were killed ; and the conquest of Montreal. Under the terms of the Treaty of Paris ending the war , France lost its colonial possessions, and the French empire in North America came to an end.

    101. John Peter Zenger trial
Zenger published articles critical of British governor William Cosby. He was taken to trial, but found not guilty. The trial set a precedent for freedom of the press in the colonies.
    102. Glorious Revolution, 1688
King James II’s policies, such as converting to catholicism, conducting a series of repressive trials known as the "Bloody Assizes," and maintianing a standing army, so outraged the people of England that Parliament asked him to resign and invited King William of the Netherlands (who became known as William II in England), to take over the throne. King James II left peacefully (after his troops deserted him) and King William II and his wife Queen Mary II took the throne without any war or bloodshed, hence the revolution was termed "glorious."
    103. John Locke (1632-1704), his theories
Locke was an English political philosopher whose ideas inspired the American revolution. He wrote that all human beings have a right to life, liberty, and property, and that governments exist to protect those rights. He believed that government was based upon an unwritten "social contract" between the rulers and their people, and if the government failed to uphold its end of the contract, the people had a right to rebel and institute a new government.

Instead of waiting for them, Washington attacked, killing 10, wounding 1 and capturing 21. The French viewed this as a grave mistake on Washington's part, saying that this advance party were diplomats, but Washington rejected his claim. Although war was not officially declared until 1756, this encounter is viewed as the first shots fired in the war.
Now the British were convinced that they must stop the advance of the French, as well as capture their forts and recapture Fort Duquesne. To accomplish this, they turned to General Edward Braddock. He immediately began organizing his forces at Alexandria, Virginia in the spring of 1755. Assisting him was Washington, whose experience in the wild was a great help to Braddock. Braddock's plan was to split his force into two columns, placing one on each side of the Potomac River, for a portion of their journey to Fort Duquesne. One of the columns was commanded by Colonel Thomas Dunbar and his 48
