Objectives...
The following French course is intended to allow you to understand written French (newspapers, articles, magazines, signs on the road during your next trip in France, etc.) and to write a letter to a French friend or correspondent. I would have liked to teach you spoken French but unfortunately, the Web is not the good medium for that. In the first five lessons, I will especially focus on the grammatical aspects of the French language in order to be able to go into conversations rapidly. This part of the course is not easy and somewhat boring, but don't give up ! The other lessons will be more conversation-oriented. If you have any questions, feel free to send me email at the address below. I hope you will enjoy learning French with me and that we'll have the opportunity to exchange some email, ... preferably in French ! One of my favorite past-time is writting. I have selected for

Cette Page en Français Last updated : December 11, 2001
This page is designed to provide you with information about the Old French language and its literature. The "Old French" era covers the period from the year 842 (date of the "Serments de Strasbourg", the earliest known document written in the emerging vernacular) until about the year 1400 (the period when the 'two-case' system, which distinguished Old French from its modern, uninflected forms, were disappearing from the written language). "Old French" normally refers to the variety that developed in the North of FranceLangue d'Oïlwhich existed in numerous dialects and of which oneFrancienbecame the ancestor of modern standard French. However, a related Southern French language (which some would call a 'dialect')Langue d'Ocwhich exists today in a number of varieties collectively known as Occitan, must be considered, too; its linguistic, historical, literary and cultural importance is inestimable. Since much of what we know about the development of the language is based on written texts, a knowledge of these texts is indispensible to understanding the language itself, and vice-versa. Therefore, numerous links to Old French texts on the Internet and access to related topics have been provided. Feel free to use this site as a link, but please let me know if you do. Contact me at the address below should you have any questions, comments or contributions (e.g., information, links).

    Resources for Learning French
This is a summary of resources I've found useful in learning French in order to survive in Neuchâtel . The selection of resources is slanted explicitly toward the goal of survival: mastering the language sufficiently to be able to buy a car, read the newspaper, get your furnace repaired, and all the other fun-filled components of day-to-day life. From that base, you can proceed to a deeper understanding of the literary language and more effective ways of expressing yourself but it doesn't make sense to worry about such refinements until you're able to warn that pesky neighbour kid that if he rings your doorbell one more time and runs away, you'll tear off his fingers and toes and feed them to your vicious dog.
    French in Action
French In Action is a video-based course created by Pierre Capretz of Yale University. This course is so excellent it almost justifies the invention of television. I know of no better way to so rapidly obtain a knowledge of day-to-day French. French in Action is focused around 52 half-hour video lessons which assume no prior knowledge of the language. The course starts in French from the first instant, and is built around a story that involves the kinds of day to day activities that are often neglected in literary-oriented language courses. Don't expect to find a lot of verb conjugation and noun-adjective agreement exercises here; the goal is developing an instinct for what "sounds right", just as children do as they learn their first language. You may feel like an idiot when you bungle such details, but the fact is you can mess up genders, adjectival forms, and much of verb conjugation and still be understood perfectly well on the street.
