Futurism
Futurism was a wide-ranging Italian movement that included painting, graphics, sculpture, poetry, literature and the performing arts and focused on the dynamic, energetic and violent character of changing 20 th century life. It especially emphasised the power, force and motion of machinery combined with the contemporary fascination with speed. On the downside it also glorified war, denigrated women, favoured Fascism and vilified artistic tradition wanting to "…destroy the museums, libraries, academies of every kind…". The movement burst violently onto the European cultural scene on 20 February 1909 when the French newspaper Le Figaro carried on its front page the aggressive and inflammatory Manifesto of Futurism, by Filippo Marinetti. In fact, at this stage, Marinetti was the movement’s only member but the following year Giacomo Balla Umberto Boccioni , Carlo Carrà, Luigi Russolo and Gino Severini co-signed The Manifesto of Futurist Painting. Indeed, Futurism was to be characterised by the large number of manifestos issued in its name and used to promote it to a mass audience.

McLuhan: Understanding Media Topic: Futurism James Reston wrote in The New York Times (July 7, 1957):
A health director ... reported this week that a small mouse, which presumably had been watching television, attacked a little girl and her full-grown cat ... Both mouse and cat survived, and the incident is recorded here as a reminder that things seem to be changing.

The Tofflers employ a deep intellectual and practical understanding of technological, economic, political, and sociological progress to predict the course of our culture at large. So far, they've been disturbingly correct. In this week's episode of "Big Thinkers," Alvin Toffler will explain in his own words what the immediate implications of the information revolution will be, and what we as a society must do to ride out the cultural turbulence to come.

at the Spring The Futurist movement was founded in Milan in 1909 and included the painters Boccioni , Carlo Carrà, Giacomo Balla, Luigi Russolo, and Gino Severini. It was inspired and promoted by the poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, who published the Futurist Manifesto in the Paris newspaper Le Figaro historical avant-gardes The themes of machines and modernity remained a characteristic of the second phase of Futurism, which in the years between the two world wars constituted one of the most advanced components, also on the official level, of Italian artistic production. Marinetti continued to be its indisputed leader, and it was he who invited Sassu to contribute to the Futurist room at the 1928 Biennale in Venice. SASSU AND FUTURISM The Factory Sassu’s Futurist period, which was part of the second phase of Futurism, dates from the earliest years of his activity until about 1930. His fundamental model was Boccioni, many of whose works Sassu could see directly in the studio of another exponent of this second Futurism, Fedele Azari. However, Sassu’s greatest response was to what could be defined as the most "classical" aspect of Boccioni’s Futurism, that is, the search for a solidity of figure within a dynamic structure of the painting. His typically Futurist works are Plastic Nude , 1928, for which two preparatory drawings survive, and Man Drinking at the Spring Mafarka il futurista

At the conclusion of this intense week, participants felt that an ongoing effort to increase awareness and promote future thinking was important....and that was the beginning of PFI. Participants in the Symposium who signed on with this effort are the Charter Members of PFI. Membership now includes many forward looking police and academic practitioners who share an interest in police futurism. PFI, although in its infancy as an organization, has participated in three World Future Society conferences, annually since 1996. A follow up to the 1991 Symposium was offered by PFI in Baltimore in 1993. Additionally, PFI members have been available to speak at a variety of conferences and schools, and PFI is becoming recognized as a valued source of information on future trends in policing and its methods and technologies. In July of 2000, the FBI Academy again hosted police futurists at "Futuristics and Law Enforcement: The Millennium Conference". Supervisory Special Agent Carl Jensen assembled a wide ranging group of PFI members, practitioners and academians to further identify critical future issues in policing. Additionally, SSA Jensen now instructs a police futurism course regularly at the FBI Academy.

At the turn of the 20th century parascientific experiments, spiritualist photography, multi-portraits, montage effects and the chronophotographs of Etienne-Jules Marey provided a rich background against which a Futurist photographic aesthetic gradually formed. Photography as a vehicle for penetrating the mysteries of life and for fixing the invisibility of matter versus energy influenced Futurist pictorial dynamism. However, there was a dilemma for Marinetti and the Futurists in 1909/1910, for as much as they hailed scientific photography as technologically innovative they could not embrace the medium as art. They felt the camera petrified life, stopped time and offered rigor mortis recordings of reality, at odds with the poetics of dynamism. It was not until 1911 and the invention of photodynamism that Italian Futurism made its distinctive contribution to the history of photography. Photodynamism was a term created by Anton Giulio Bragaglia to define the photographs of movement he made with his brother Arturo. The aim of these pioneering works was to induce visual vertigo causing the image represented to move as far as possible from the photographic reproduction of things. With financial support from Marinetti, the Bragaglia brothers continued their research and Fotodinamismo Futurista was published in 1913. Anton Giulios theoretical ideas were well received in photographic circles and many were adopted by other European avant-garde movements in the 1920s and 1930s.

A History
of the Foundation of
Futurism and Preterism
The papacy suffered a major setback through the Reformation. The help of the monastic orders was sought, but they were so decadent that they had lost the respect of the people. The Dominicans and Franciscans, peddling relics and indulgences, had become the butt of ridicule and mockery. At this crisis Loyola and his companions offered their services, to go wherever the pope should designate, as preachers, missionaries, teachers, counselors, and reformers. A new order was created, authorized in 1540, which infused a new spirit and spread rapidly in Europe. Like a wounded giant, Romanism arose in desperation to recover her lost prestige and shrunken territory. Their ambitious goal was to become the universal and principal order of the Roman church. Though they took the name Society of Jesus (Jesuits), the Protestants termed them Jesuwider (against Jesus). Their influence was immediately felt. They grew more powerful and comprehensive year by year, employing science, art, culture, politics, foreign missions, trades and industry. They began to preach, as Protestants were accustomed to do, in the streets and marts, coming to be among the most eloquent preachers of the age. The churches were too small to accommodate the multitudes that flocked to hear them. At Rome, they were scattered throughout the various churches. Then they began to spread throughout Italy, Portugal, Germany, and especially Austria and Bavaria. They hemmed in the Protestant movement on all sides. Some cities, such as Ingolstadt and Cologne, opened their doors; others opposed them.

http://www-camil.music.uiuc.edu/Projects/EAM/Futurism.html
Futurism Futurism, a unique phenomenon to the modern era, not only found its roots in many of the arts, but also and most persuasively in politics. The Futurists were the first artists of this century who pledged themselves to ideological activism and devoted their energies and talents to converting he masses to that ideal, rather than to formalizing and promoting their individual artistic merits." The Futurist artistic movement began not through a series of works as most other artistic movements do, but through a series of manifests. Marinetti's bellicose manifesto generated interest and brought Italy into the Twentieth century. His militant views on politics and is visionary artistic mind created a public demand for a forward thinking society. Many artists were drawn to Marinetti's empassioned statements; others only in spirit. Some artists pointed out that there was nothing new in the Futurist movement, while although it was most likely true, did not dissuade its followers Marinetti turned his political efforts to reacquiring land in the northern portion of Italy that had been claimed by Austria. He was again rewarded and in 1915, Italy won back the rights to most of these northern territories. When World War I started shortly after, the Futurists all enlisted. Some of them, such as Luigi Russolo, became officers in the army and became highly decorated soldiers. At the end of the war, the Futurists returned to their promotion of their forward thinking philosophies. These interested a forward-thinking, young Fascist named Benito Mussolini. It was Mussolini who became one of the most politically active in conjunction with the positions of the Futurists, during the years 1918 to 1920. After the successful reintegration of the position of the Futurists in society, Mussolini used his political clout to silence them. The discarded Futurists became embittered by the political situation, and with drew them selves from political activism.

COMING SOON TO A FUTURE NEAR YOU
J ust when I was getting over a deep depression caused by Newsweek 's tall tales of the new world a-coming symbolized by the recent change of digits, I made the mistake of reading the Wall Street Journal 's week-end ventures into futurism. "Futurism" got some bad press in recent years, as well it might, owing to Newt Gingrich 's Tofflerite d'Annunzio Marinetti Italian fascism , as soon as it was available. These are complex matters, of course, and for all I know the "art" may have been real.
