INTRODUCTION
Background: The "Republic of the Equator" was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Venezuela). Between 1904 and 1942, Ecuador lost territories in a series of conflicts with its neighbors. A border war with Peru that flared in 1995 was resolved in 1999.

An Introduction to Ecuador
By Mike Yaeger and Matt Lepkowski Related Articles Descending into the Quito airport, one sees a sprawling city sitting in a deep valley surrounded by white stucco houses cascading down the mountainsides. The stench of scorched land fills the air, mingling with the smell of exhaust from the many diesel-burning buses that flood the streets of the Capitol City. Quito is a city that blends the rich traditions of it's European and Indian architecture, culture and relaxed way of life, with a constant striving to break into the modern age of business and commerce. It is a city characterized by old churches next to glass office towers, modern banks with crumbling sidewalks, and rich mixture of people living by the old traditions and others firmly entrenched in the new world. Quito represents a country in the midst of change, attempting to preserve the old, yet take advantage of the new.
Geography of Ecuador
These diverse habitats create a country that offers much to the visiting tourist. There are very high active volcanoes to climb, such as Mount Cotopaxi, sitting at almost 20,000 feet. There are lush tropical rainforests, some virgin and some not, providing adventures into a vanishing lifestyle and ecosphere. There is a long coastline providing small fishing villages, ecoresorts, untouched beaches, and the Galapagos Islands.

W ELCOME to G ALAPAGOS G EOLOGY ON THE W EB . For those interested in natural history, there are few places quite as facinating as the Galapagos. The intention of this web site is to provide information on the Galapagos Islands to both scientists and non-scientists alike. Charles Darwin was the first geologist to explore the Galapagos. He made many important observations of Galapagos geology and drew conclusions that remain valid today. Darwin was also fascinated by the remarkable and unique biota of the islands. His careful biological observations later led him to propose a theory, that of natural selection , that revolutionized the way scientists think of life. While the emphasis of this web site is on geology, we too have found Galapagos wildlife difficult to ignore, so you will find many images and observations on biology, as well as geology, on this site. We hope you enjoy your visit. If you are interested in news about the recent oil spill in the Galapagos and how you can help, see the Charles Darwin Foundation Web Site A Brief Introduction to Galapagos Geology

Biogeography and ecology of plant invasions in the Galapagos Islands with a case study of Psidium guajava L. (common guava)

Contents: Research Summary
Research Summary
Over the past 50 years biological invasions have increasingly been recognized as one of the greatest threats to intact ecosystems and to human security. In spite of this concern and a growing body of evidence that it is justified, many fundamental questions remain unresolved.
The Galapagos Islands' simplified ecosystems provide a unique opportunity to research fundamental questions of invasion ecology. A single species, Psidium guajava , has invaded several islands, each to varying degrees over the past hundred years and each of which possesses a characteristic flora and vegetation zonation which further facilitates such a study.
This research has the following objectives:
1) develop and analyse a comprehensive dataset of invasive vascular plant species for the Galapagos Islands and determine the extent to which it conforms to or refutes existing models describing plant invasiveness;
2) determine the historical and current distribution of Psidium guajava to understand the dynamics of its expansion;

http://www.nasexpo.com/schools/About_Galapagos.htm
For the visitor the Galápagos Islands is an all-year-round destination. The best way to visit these islands is to fly to the Ecuadorian mainland and take the short flight to the Islands. The Galápagos archipelago is a chain of volcanic islands which are moving southeast from a "hot spot" in the Earth's crust. The westernmost islands have active volcanoes but on the eastern ones which are older, the volcanoes have become dormant and begun to erode. There are thirteen large islands and many smaller ones. Colonisation of the islands varies from tough, sparse vegetation to lush forests. The islands are located near the Equator, 1000 km (600 miles) off the west coast of Ecuador. The major influence on the climate is the Humboldt current, which brings cool water laden with plankton past the islands. The rainy season lasts from January to June. The temperature range at this time is 23-30°C (75-85°F). The rain is interspersed with sunny periods and the water temperature is about 23°C (75°F). It is a pleasant time to visit. In the dry season, both the air and water temperatures are a few degrees cooler and a lightweight wetsuit may be needed. All this, of course, is subject to El Niño The Galápagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Research Station control the national park that covers 97% of the land and water in the region. The fee of $100.00 USD, which is collected from each tourist, is the major source of income to conserve the area and to eradicate the feral animals. Only five of the islands are inhabited; some islands are open only to scientists, but most can be visited in the company of an accredited naturalist guide. There are two airports, one on Baltra (just north of Santa Cruz) and the other on San Cristóbal. The total population is about 20,000. The main towns are Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristóbal.

Reading List Geography Central Chile is the cultural nucleus of the country. All of Chile's largest cities are located here, as are most of its universities and industries, its vineyards, finest agricultural lands, colonial and early republican architecture. In fact, central Chile is something of a microcosm of the country, balanced between deserts to the north and forests to the south, with the capital poised between the highest peaks in the Americas and a host of premier beach resorts. Santiago, the capital, is a focal point of Latin American commerce and the point of entry for nearly all international arrivals. Clean and modern, Santiago sits in a basin between the Coast Range to the west and the Andes to the east. World-class ski areas in the central Andes lie only forty-five minutes away, up steep switchbacks which climb over 7,500 feet in twenty-six miles. Numerous vineyards surround the capital; hotsprings, seventeenth-century colonial haciendas, and national parks in both the Andes and the Coast Range, all make easy day trips. At night, visitors may choose from a variety of restaurants serving all types of regional and ethnic cuisines, and excellent hotels assure a good night's sleep for business or pleasure.
