MTAS Student Report:
MTSU's History Department Field Trip
The Gambia, West Africa, Summer 1998
MTSU senior Vic Matthews ready for a fantastic summer adventure in 1998. Vic was a history major and anthropology minor at MTSU. She was president of Middle Tennessee Anthropology Society and was also active in MTSU Special Events/Concerts. Vic's report of her trip follows.
"From May 29 through July 6, 1998, I visited The Gambia, West Africa, with Dr. Bakari's group from the history department here at Middle Tennessee State University. There were fifteen of us from MTSU and we met up with others from different universities from across the U.S. "
"We mainly stayed in a town called Bakau, but traveled to many other areas as well. We had class each day Monday through Friday from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. and took many field trips. There was a total of fifty-one students, so sometimes it was hard to get transportation for the entire group. Other days we would have free time and it was during those times that I learned more about the culture, tribes, and politics of The Gambia."
"Everyday was a new adventure and I learned more about culture, life, and myself than I did in four years of classroom college. Going out and living in different cultures has helped me to realize that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life."

Banjul The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) recently held a panel discussion with school heads over how to prevent school-going children from visiting nightclubs, during sporting occasions. According to Jalamang Camara the national co-ordinator of the Child Protection Alliance (CPA) UNESCO said they are concerned over the welfare of children and urged school authorities take "immediate step" to discourage the nightclub culture among children. Jalamang called on parents to stop allowing their school going children to attend nightclubs during school sporting occasions.

Banjul As part of bringing to the fore the yester years of Banjul culture, on Friday, hundreds of city dwellers witnessed the Banjul 'Demba' celebration that started three years back. This year, the programme commenced with a carnival from the Arch 22 to Fitzgerald Street along with traditional dresses, songs and dances, led by the police band. Speaking at the occasion, the SOS for Fisheries and Natural Resources, Mrs. Susan Wafa Ogoo, urged the people of Banjul to unite and emulate their grand parents who had lived in love and harmony. 'Don't let politics tear you apart,' she advised. One of Banjul's most illustrious sons, Amigo Jeng, proprietor of ICE Man and Jeng's Electrical, lauded the programme's initiator, Emmanuel 'Manukumba' Williams for 'organising such an important programme like Banjul Demba.' Mr. Jeng also thanked President Jammeh for what he called 'his wonderful support' and urged Banjulians to unite for the betterment of the Gambia.
