    Term 1845 to 1849
    • Through a compromise with the British over a northern border, Polk managed to gain the territory which now make up Washington and Oregon. This made Polk the first president to run the country extending from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was during President Polk’s term in 1845 that the abolitionist and escaped slave Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography, endangering his own freedom by doing so. President Polk believed that the United States had a "manifest destiny" to expand. His attempts to gain more of Texas, New Mexico, and California led to the Mexican War. The invention of the revolver by Samuel Colt helped the U.S. to win this war and gain five hundred thousand square miles of land. Polk had promised to serve only one term in office. True to his word he retired at the end of his term. He died only three months after

Vice President - Chester A. Arthur Born: November 19, 1831 Orange Township, Ohio Occupation: Teacher, Public Official Married Lucretia Rudolph Died: September 19, 1881 Elberon, New Jersey Early Years:
Garfield attended school only three months of the year, but he loved learning and read a lot. At 16, working on a canal boat, he had to lead the horses pulling the boat of cargo, and fell into the canal 14 times before he learned to handle the team. His Presidency: The Republican party was divided between the Stalwarts, who backed President Grant and the Half-Breeds, who supported Senator Blaine. When Garfield was elected with Senator Blaine's support, he made enemies by giving Half-Breeds important government jobs. After six months in office, he was shot by a Stalwart and died from blood poisoning.

The newly published book by William Dunham entitled The Mathematical Universe , contains an intriguing story about U.S. President James A. Garfield the same Garfield who was assassinated in 1881 by networks, according to historian Anton Chaitkin, that were controlled by the British Monarchy. Garfield, Dunham reveals, was the author of a unique proof of the Pythagorean Theorem. This, obviously, was back in the days when U.S. political leaders still admired a classical education. How far are we now from the oratory of an Abraham Lincoln, or from the inspired crusade for classical education in free, public schools by a Thaddeus Stevens! And how unusual for a U.S. president and Congressman to be involved in geometrical constructions! But perhaps this story further fills in the picture of why such a political leadership was considered a threat to the British aristocracy who had just seen their support for the Confederacy go up in flames. Dunham's book, which is arranged to present different discoveries and personalities in the history of mathematics "from A to Z", includes under the letter "H", the chapter "Hypotenuse", in which he discusses 3 different proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem. These include the "Chinese Proof" embodied in the

Things don't turn up in this world until somebody turns them up. Poverty is uncomfortable; but nine times out of ten the best thing that can happen to a young man is to be tossed overboard and compelled to sink or swim. If the power to do hard work is not talent, it is the best possible substitute for it. A pound of pluck is worth a ton of luck.
