What can I expect as I start looking for my Caribbean ancestors?

My own experience has been very positive. When I first started, I joined one of the email Lists and found very nurturing guidance which gently put me on track, gave me information and suggested both web sites, software and required reading. I used every tool I could find, including search engines, meta-search engines and every word, name and combination I could think of.
On the dark side, I have seen people come onto both email and on-line Lists like bulls into a ring, complete with virtual snorting, fiery words and heavy breathing, and have gone away mostly empty-handed after making outright demands of the volunteers they treated like paid servants and flinging insults at everyone in sight.

The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. This lead to the USGenWeb of which Wisconsin is a part.

    Welcome to my homepage!
    I am a 30 year old PHILHELLENE (lover of Greece) from Massachusetts, a vegetarian, Pisceas, civil/environmental engineer, and avid animal lover. My favorite place in the world is Greece. For those of you who are Greek, you should understand my reasoning without me having to explain, and for those of you who are not, I will try. Culture, Tradition, Family Ties, Passion.......(not to mention Scenery, Food, Music, Dance, and History) are the words that come to my mind. These are all the things that make my heart beat, feel bliss, passion, and peace at the same time. If you didn't understand my reasoning, I do not apologize.....simply go to Greece to experience it for yourself! Or, understand what I am saying by knowing and acknowledging that you have found "your" place in the world that gives you the same feelings.

    Welcome to the Franco-American Heritage Museum! We want to share our vision for the permanent museum which will preserve our French-Canadian and Acadian heritage while educating future generations about their ancestry. We are an all-volunteer organization Did you know?
    • Almost a million French-Canadians immigrated to the United States from 1840 - 1930;
    • Franco-Americans are the 2nd largest ethnic group in New England, after Irish-Americans
    • We are the 5th largest ethnic group nationwide, according to the 1990 U.S. Census;
    • Paul Revere was the son of a French Huguenot immigrant, Apollos Rivoire;
    • Franco-Americans started the first credit unions;
    • Tens of thousands of French-Canadians were actively recruited and volunteered for the Union Army during the Civil war;
    • Several regiments from Maine or Vermont contained so many French-Canadians that French became the dominant language within some companies;
    • In the 19th Century, the Michigan mining industry was so desperate for labor that the various companies got together and founded the Mining Emigrant Aid Association to recruit workers in Quebec and elsewhere;
    • Franco-American labor was instrumental in the rapid industrialization of the Northeastern United States;

    Includes membership information, general store, coat of arms, fun facts, genealogy information and forum.
    http://www.wmstrother.org/
    What is the William Strother Society, Inc.? The William Strother Society, Inc. is a family association dedicated to perpetuating the memories of our ancestors and furthering fellowship among the descendants of William Strother (immigrant). Founded in 1984 and incorporated in Virginia in 1992 as a non-profit organization, the Society's members include descendants and their families of William Strother (immigrant), related families and others interested in the Strother family. Today there are over 500 active members in the Society from throughout the United States and around the world. William Strother (immigrant) settled in colonial Virginia in the seventeenth century in what is now King George County on the Rappahannock River near Port Conway. William's will, probated in 1702, names his wife Dorothy and six children: William, James, Jeremiah, Robert, Benjamin and Joseph. These six sons gave us a Strother family, which includes U.S. presidents, military leaders, judges, and legislators. Society members meet at a conference held every two years in different locations, usually in Virginia. The next conference will be in August 2004. Activities will include tours of historical sites, genealogical workshops, social gatherings and numerous opportunities to share family information. Members will be available to assist those uncertain of their Strother "roots."

    55. The German Nobility
    general information about German nobility by Gilbert von Studnitz.
    http://www2.genealogy.net/gene/misc/nobility_faq.html
    German Genealogy Home What's New General Help Regional Research
    The German Nobility
    This is taken from an article written by Gilbert von Studnitz in "Der Blumenbaum", a publication of the Sacramento German Genealogy Society, Vol. 9, number 4, April-June 1992. This article, which also appears in the FAQ for the Usenet newsgroup alt.talk.royalty, is used by permission of the author.
    The German Nobility in Law and Practice
    The German system of nobility, as indeed the European system in general, is quite different from the English system with which most Americans are familiar. The English have a peerage system and not an extensive system of nobility, though their squires or landed gentry would tend to be the closest thing. In England only the eldest son usually inherits the title and the rest are considered commoners, though they may bear "courtesy titles" if their father has more than one, or may be called "Lord" or "Lady" without actually being one. The German nobility is divided into two major divisions, that of the lower (niedriger Adel) and the high (hoher Adel). It is further divided into the ancient nobility (Uradel) and the newer nobility (commonly known as Briefadel, or literally nobility by letter-cachet, but also including other groups.) The Uradel may be of either the lower or high nobility, but the Briefadel is always of the lower. In Germany, all legitimate children of a nobleman become nobles themselves, and most titles pass onto all the children with few exceptions. All the children of sovereigns did not, of course, become kings or electors, but did become princes or princesses. In the last decades of the German Empire, in imitation of the English system, a few families were ennobled with titles that passed on only to the eldest son, the remainder retaining either their father's former title (which he also still carried) or just untitled nobility.
