The goal of any Japanese genealogist is to make a connection into the koseki "tree". To find a koseki you must be able to find the local ward office the koseki record is kept, and the name of the head of the family and his/her address in Japan. Thus your initial search for background information in the United States should center around the above requirements. Once the above information is determined, a request for a koseki can be made. Organize the Information You Collected
The only way to organize the myriad of data you will collect is with a software program and a PC. Which software is a personal choice. Below are some WWW pages that list and or rate the different software available.

Getting Started in Genealogy
Researching your ancestors and the history of your community can be fun and rewarding. By learning more about your family's history, you will have a better understanding of who you are and your heritage. You can begin by viewing, printing, and entering information on the Record of Ancestry chart. The ancestry chart is provided in a PDF (Portable Document Format) file, which can be viewed or printed using your Web browser and Adobe Acrobat Reader software. Macintosh and Windows versions of Acrobat Reader may be downloaded free of charge from Adobe.
Click here to find out how to obtain the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Download the Record of Ancestry chart
(Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 or later). Remember, you eventually will need to verify your entries by consulting the original records of these events. This careful documentation of family history marks the work of a good genealogist.
Where to begin Your local library can provide you with any number of books from which you can learn the fundamentals of genealogy. Your local librarian can often provide the names and addresses of local genealogical and historical societies. The people in these organizations are more than happy to encourage you in your new hobby and offer helpful advice. For suggestions from the professionals on beginning your family history search, try the

Names, dates and places are the building blocks of compiling a family history. What do you know about your parents and grandparents? Talk to them. What were their dates and places of birth and marriage? Record the information on a pedigree chart. Ask older family members specific questions about your ancestors. "What was your grandmother's maiden name?" "Where did she live as a child?" "What were her parents' names?" "When did they come to Canada?" Any clue, no matter how small, may help your search. Visit your local library. There you will find genealogical "how to" books, local histories and other types of reference books. Learn the history and geography of the area where your ancestors lived. Now you're ready to start digging into old records by searching relevant genealogical sources While you work, remember the basic rules of genealogy: Start with yourself and work backwards through each previous generation. Work from the known to the unknown. Write down what you find and where you found it. What institution? Which collection of records? What volume and page number? Which microfilm reel?

Getting Started in African American Genealogy
How I got started
I am often asked by many persons how I got started in researching my family history. The answer is simple, I have always wanted to know things about my family. Perhaps because my own immediate family was a small one. Perhaps because I was just naturally curious. But I know that most of my interest in knowning my history came from the influence of 3 women in my life. It is those three women who still guide me as their words said to me became my guiding source.
I grew up in Ft. Smith around three very special women my mother, my grandmother, and my great grandmother. Interestingly, each was either a mother-in-law or daughter-in-law to the next. My mother often shared with me details of her own life, having been raised by her own grandmother. My mother's mother Lilly died in the Tuberculosis epidemic that gripped the country while my mother was still an infant. Subsequently, she was raised by a grandmother and an aunt. They provided the guidance and love and direction upon which my mother, Pauline's foundation was built.
My mother's compassion and love for the elderly was showered upon my other special guardians from my childhood-my grandmother Ellen Bass Walton, and my great grandmother Sallie Walton were those two special women.

Getting Started in Genealogy
The topic of Getting Started with your Genealogy Research, will differ, depending upon where you live and what available resources you will have available near your home. It would take up countless volumes of books, and is beyond the scope of this FAQ. I would highly recommend to anyone interested in learning more about Genealogy to first visit their local library and check out all available books on Genealogy. In addition to, or in place of a visit to the library, you might find enough information on the World Wide Web to satisfy your interest. Check out our links below for more information. If, after this, you desire more information, join a local Genealogical Society. Meeting with people face-to-face with prior experience is, by far, the best way to make sure that you get started in the the right direction .

Getting Started in Genealogy and Family History
Genealogy and Family History
Genealogy is the study of the descents of families and persons from an ancestor or ancestors. This study is undertaken by many people out of interest in their personal and family origins. As a hobby it can become pleasantly addictive, at least to the person concerned. However the study is also undertaken professionally, not just in order to provide a commercial service that can be used by people who are seeking help in researching their origins, but also for very serious legal and financial reasons. Thus there are accepted standards for doing genealogy "properly" - standards that we recommend you seek to learn and emulate. The term Family History used to be regarded as synonymous with Genealogy, but now it applies to biographical research into one's ancestors - the aim typically being to produce a well-documented narrative history, of interest to family members and perhaps future generations. Thus the study of family history involves putting flesh on the skeleton that is produced by genealogy - and involves the study of the historical circumstances and geographical situation in which ancestors lived. (The resulting ability to associate historical events with particular generations or individuals of your family can help history come really alive for you.)

The First Steps
"I'm really new to this genealogy thing and I've got this information from the family bible. I haven't a clue where to go next to find out any information. I'm tied to my home in Podunk so travelling to places to research is really difficult. Any suggestions?" Welcome "newbie". That's the term used for someone new to Internet research. It's not perjorative, so no one is putting you down, but understand that some members of the online community are quickly "put off" by people who expect the Internet to have all the answers, or the volunteers who provide help to have all the time in the world to assist you. While the internet is "slowly" starting to make things easier, it does not replace traditional research, trips to the library and good old-fashioned "elbow grease." My way of saying, "do your homework." This page is dedicated to the new researcher. First of all, I assume that you're here because you have some evidence that your family is from Lincolnshire. There is nothing more frustrating to those of us who volunteer time to have someone say, "Well, my family is English and I was hoping they might be from Lincolnshire." Although Lincolnshire is the second largest county in area, our English ancestors were very mobile and you need to narrow your search area. So, first thing is to find out what part of England, and specifically Lincolnshire, your ancestors hailed from.
