    67. Native Americans, French Canadians And Intermarriage
Before discussing native americans in World War I, this web site presents a finesummary of Indian relations with Oregon native American genealogy.
    http://www.usgennet.org/alhnorus/ahorclak/indiancensus.html
Native Americans, French Canadians, and Intermarriage Early records present a special challenge for people researching Native American or mixed-race ancestors. Prior to 1870, excepting head-counts on reservations, censuses enumerated only whites, and usually only adult males at that. Until 1900 the US Census failed to accurately reflect the names and numbers of Oregon's Native American population. Censuses taken to record "on" and "off" reservation Indians also omitted many tribal members; until quite late in the 19th Century, many people easily traveled between reservations and more familiar homelands. The following sources are especially useful for the names of Metis (part-Indian/ part-white, usually French Canadian) people as well as for Native Oregonians associated with the missions or the fur trade:
    Hudson's Bay Company Archives
Mountain Men and the Fur Trade Jesuit Oregon Province Archives Catholic Church Records Harriet Munick began publishing the Catholic Church Records from the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon in 1972. She completed seven volumes, indexing some 14 parishes. This website offers a cumulative index to all seven books under the categories of baptisms, marriages and deaths. The database includes over 22,000 names and is searchable. Catholic Church Records of the Pacific Northwest Munick's Vancouver volumes, a record of baptisms, marriages, and burials during travel to Ft. Vancouver (1838), at Vancouver (1838-1844), at St. James Church (1842-1856) and at Stellamaris Mission (1848-1860) are indexed for biographies by Connie Lenzen . The Church records were kept by priests Francois Norbert Blanchet and Modeste Demers who traveled from Canada to Oregon with the Hudson's Bay Company and began their missionary work with a service at Ft. Vancouver.

Welcome to the Native American webpage at the West Nyack Free Library. This page has been developed to serve the needs of students and the general public within the Ramapo Catskill Library System; however, everyone is welcome. It is my goal to present a vast array of sites that cover all aspects of Native American life, both past and present, with particular attention given to official tribal pages and sites that have received awards for quality and design.
Please be aware that the sites and titles provided here represent only a small amount of the available information on Native Americans. Besides the Internet, there is a vast array of books, articles, and audio visual materials available concerning Native Americans. Please visit the library for assistance throughout your research process. Finally, if you have any questions or comments concerning this page, please send your email to me, Susan Jacobs , at the West Nyack Free Library. Thank you for visiting.

Two of the major publications for Native American ancestry and Indian genealogy are the Dawes Commision, i.e. the Five Civilized Tribes consisting of the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chikasaw, Creek and Seminole Tribes, and the Guion Miller Commission. The Guion Miller commission is primarily for the Cherokee Tribe residing east of the Mississippi River who escaped Indian removal to the Indian Territory in Oklahoma. Unlike the Dawes Commission which awarded land allotments, the Guion Miller Commission awarded annuities.

In a sense, Native Americans were the first "immigrants" to what is today the United States. Crossing over from far Northeast Asia in migration waves that began before 30,000 B.C., Native Americans succeeded in settling throughout the continent by 8,000 B.C. By the time Columbus arrived in 1492, somewhere between one and two million Native Americans lived on the lands north of the Rio Grande. During the next four hundred years, however, the bulk of the Native American population died as a result of disease and poor treatment by the European settlers and their descendants. Because most Native American tribes did not develop a written language (with the exception of the Cherokee, who developed a writing system in the nineteenth century), finding primary records of your distant Native American ancestors will likely prove difficult. It is possible, however, that texts written by Europeans or Americans acquainted with the tribe at the time could prove helpful. By the late nineteenth century, almost all tribes were on reservations, so the standard American documents should as birth and death certificates should be available from this time forward.

  • As the railroad and more settlers moved west to Kansas and Nebraska, Native- and non-Native Americans had more contact, often bloody. Thus, the U.S. government limited Native Americans to particular regions of the country. How did she feel about this containment?
  • As more people moved into and through Native American regions, the battles increased. The Native Americans wanted to keep their homes, and the non-Native Americans wanted the land for farming, railroads, and gold mining. Did she think the two groups could work out an agreement?
  • Did she fight in any battles between the Native Americans and the U.S troops? Which battle was it? On which side did she fight? Describe her role in the fighting. What was the outcome of the battle? What were its consequences?
  • There was a tremendous amount of hatred between Native and non-Native Americans. Did anyone seem to sympathize with the Native Americans and their loss of land? Did she? Did she think about how concentration would affect their culture?
