molecular genetics The human deoxyribonucleic acid base pair code in all cells specifies the characteristics of the individual, or their phenotype. In any one human chromosome there are two genes at equivalent loci, each coding for a polypeptide. This code is divided in gametes such that offspring only receive 50% of each parent's genetic constitution, that is, inheritance is particulate. The particle randomly selected is one of the two genes at each loci. The variable selection and segregation of genes into gametes ensures that the diversity of human characteristics is maintained. From these first principles, diseases can be classified into those resulting from defects in:
  • whole chromosomes, either in number or form individual genes lots of genes and/ or the environment: multifactorial

[General]
Human development depends on genetic and environmental factors. A person's genetic composition (genome) is established at conception. The genetic information is carried in the DNA of the chromosomes and mitochondria. Most diseases probably have some genetic component, the extent of which varies. Environmental factors may alter genetic information through mutation or other structural alteration and can affect classic genetic disorders (eg, dietary management in phenylketonuria, drugs for hypercholesterolemia). DNA's capacity to replicate constitutes the basis of hereditary transmission. DNA also provides the genetic code, which determines cell development and metabolism by controlling RNA synthesis. The sequence of the elements (nucleotides) that comprise DNA and RNA determines protein composition and thus its function. Genes, the basic units of heredity, are arranged linearly within the DNA along the chromosomes; each gene has a specific location (locus) or position on the chromosomes. The number and arrangement of loci on homologous chromosomes are usually identical. However, the structure of a specific gene may have minor variations (polymorphisms) without causing disease. The specific nucleotide sequence of the genes that occupy the two homologous loci along the two chromosomes of a pair are called alleles. The two alleles (ie, the one inherited from the mother and the one inherited from the father) may have slightly different nucleotide sequences or may be the same. A person with a pair of identical alleles for a particular gene is a homozygote; a person with a pair of dissimilar alleles is a heterozygote.

Genetics is a course designed for biology majors and is part of the core that all biology majors must complete who are working towards a Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Science , or Bachelor of Science in Education . The objective of the course is to introduce the principles of Mendelian, molecular, and population genetics. In addition to the body of facts associated with genetics, you will be introduced to the methods that various scientists have used to solve different problems in genetics and the methodology that was used to test competing theories.

    General Genetics
    Overview
Plant life, growth and development, is genetically determined but also greatly influenced by the environment. The rather inefficient exploitation of the genetic potential (in average to only about 20-30% in crop plants) is attributed to environmental stresses. On the other hand plants have the capacity to survive extreme abiotic stress conditions. Owing to their sessile lifestyle it is of utmost importance that plants integrate diverse signals from the environment and respond by the induction of protective mechanisms. The focus in the General Genetics unit is on basic research of functional genetics investigating the environmental influences on plant growth and development. Model systems such as Arabidopsis thaliana Nicotiana tabacum , and Zea mays are studied by genetic and reverse genetic approaches. Major areas of study are: the relation between gene function and phenotype, molecular mechanisms of regulation of gene expression, signal perception and transfer. Part of this work has strategic aspects important for agriculture and plant biotechnology The environmental aspects of research are linked to the heat shock response. Crucial to the perception of stress and the initiation of a response are heat shock transcription factors (HSF) whose complexity in plants is amazingly high. Their functional roles appear to be very diverse and are not yet understood. HSF-dependently expressed genes encode heat shock proteins and, as has been recently detected, novel targets including genes involved in oxidative stress, cold stress and other abiotic stress responses. The long-term goals are directed towards the understanding of the mole-cular mechanisms of common stress tolerance.
