NEWS The National Center for Genome Resources Receives NSF, "Functional Genomics of Phytophthora-Plant Interactions", Grant Award For Immediate Use: October 3, 2002 Contact: Communications Department, (800) 450-4854 Santa Fe, NM., October 3, 2002 The National Center for Genome Resources (NCGR) in collaboration with the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) at Ohio State University, announced a National Science Foundation grant award for $1.9 Million over the next four years. "The NSF project will combine the technology of virus-mediated gene expression with genome sequence data to carry out high throughput functional screening of Phytophthora genes in plants and to identify novel virulence genes from these devastating plant pathogens", said Dr. Sophien Kamoun, PI for Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. Diseases caused by Phytophthora spp. result in estimated yearly losses of more that $10 Billion worldwide. These pathogens affect plants as diverse as potato, soybean, cocoa, and strawberries. Several national and international institutions have engaged in identifying Phytophthora virulence genes and host resistance genes, but progress has been slow.

ABOUT GeneX-Lite GeneX-Lite strives to make the greatest use of gene expression data by integrating several complementary technologies to create a system that may be utilized by a large institution or an individual researcher's private lab. is designed to accomodate a wide variety of measurement technologies such as one-color or multi-color spotted arrays. Specifically, the aim of is to provide a rich and robust set of freely available resources as described below. Following the deployment of the GeneX 1.0 prototype and maintenance for about one year, GeneX-Lite was developed using lessons-learned from the prototype system. Rather than trying to rework the prototype (as many software development projects do) was a complete redesign and rewrite. This effort was accomplished by NCGR in collaboration with the University of New Mexico. The resulting integrated gene expression toolset provides the following features:
    • Data Management The amount of data produced by gene expression experiments may be very large. Efficient storage and access to this data using the standard file system quickly becomes cumbersome.

A genome is the entire genetic code of an organism - every single base pair in it's DNA - and that's billions of base pairs. It is very expensive and time consuming to sequence an entire genome (the first sequence of the human genome took over ten years and billions of dollars); consequently, as we do not currently have the funding to sequence the genome of the coelacanth. We are using the coelacanth to develop a capacity in South Africa for genome studies.
