Henderson Island weather Air Photo of Henderson Island Henderson Island is an unihabitated raised reef island, 9.6 km long by 5.1 km wide with an area of 36 square km, in the Pitcairn Island group of the SE Pacific. The island's perimeter is 26.4 km; of this, 16.5 km is encircled by a fringing reef. It is 168 km ENE of Pitcairn. Henderson Island is the largest island in the Pitcairn Island group, one of the remotest groups of islands in the South Pacific, with no major land mass within a 5,000km radius. The group comprises four islands, with Henderson lying 200km east-north-east of Pitcairn, 200km east of Oeno and 360km west of Ducie. Only Ducie, and the Chilean islands of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and Sala y Gomez lie further to the east within Polynesia. The Pitcairn group is a Dependent Territory of the United Kingdom governed by the British High Commissioner in New Zealand, and a 10 member island council of H.M.S. Bounty descendants on Pitcairn Island. Henderson Island is (British) Crown Land. The Pitcairn Islanders visit Henderson Island occasionally to collect miro wood (Thespesia populnea) for curio-making.

SMU Department of Geography General Information and Departmental Policy General Information In its broadest sense, geography studies the relationship between people and their surroundings. It derives much of its educational value from its interdisciplinary approach to such relationships. At the same time, it is a subject of practical importance in such fields as urban and regional planning, resource development, industrial location, marketing research, and environmental management. The Geography Department has developed five major programs: the first is designed for students interested in urban and regional development; the second concentrates on marine studies in geography; the third concerns environmental management; the fourth is in physical geography; and the fifth is a general/teaching major which will be of particular interest to geography teachers and prospective geography teachers. Departmental Policy The Department regards 200-level courses as service courses for the university in general and basic introductory courses for geography majors. Higher level courses are designed primarily to serve the interest of geography majors but may be of interest to students in cognate areas. In some cases, the Department may allow a student from a cognate area to take the course without the stated prerequisite: for example, economics students may be admitted to GPY 321.1(.2) or 331.1(.2). History majors may be allowed to take GPY 429.0. The course content in most geography courses is cumulative.

Emphasis will be placed on the characteristics of world patterns of human organization and distribution as viewed in contemporary geography. and/or World Geography (3-0) This course stresses the similarities and differences of the major world regions. Emphasis is given to human behavior in a spatial context. and Introduction to Physical Geography and Quantitative Methods (3-0) Introduction to quantitative methods commonly used by geographers and planners to describe, explain, and predict human spatial organization. The objective is to increase understanding of spatial structures and processes through problem solving, including the definition and statistical measurement of areal associations, the optimization of location decision making, and the use of other modeling techniques to describe and explain cultural and physical associations. Basic statistical techniques will be taught in this course.
