http://www.on-samui.com/info-thailand/geography.html
GEOGRAPHY Return to Index of Thailand Information Return to Main Page Thailand is a Southeast Asian, predominantly Buddhist kingdom almost equidistant between India and China. For centuries known by outsiders as Siam, Thailand has been something of a Southeast Asian migratory, cultural and religious crossroads. Thailand has an area of 517 000 sq km, making it slightly smaller than the state of Texas in the USA, or about the size of France. Its shape on the map has been compared to the head of an elephant, with its trunk extending down the Malay peninsula. The centre of Thailand, Bangkok, is at about 14 degrees north latitude, putting it on a level with Madras, Manila, Guatemala and Khartoum. The country's longest north-south distance is about 1860km, but its shape makes distances in any other direction 1000km or less. Because the north-south reach spans roughly 16 latitudinal degrees, Thailand has perhaps the most diverse climate in SouthEast Asia. The topography varies from high mountains in the North (the southermost extreme of a series of ranges that extend across northern Myanmar and south-west China to the south-eastern edges of the Tibet Plateau) to limestone-encrusted tropical islands in the South that are part of the Malay Archipelago.

A paper by Larry Daniel that reviews the general characteristics of a spatial decision support system (SDSS) applied to site analysis.

SDSS for Location Planning, or The Seat of the Pants is Out
by Larry Daniel
Manager of GIS Development
MPSI, Inc.
(Published in GeoInfo Systems December 1992) In the GeoInfo Systems May '92 issue, Donald Cooke described the general characteristics of a spatial decision support system (SDSS). This article reviews those concepts and extends the discussion by examining SDSS as it has historically applied to site analysis.
Reviewing SDSS
As described by Donald Cooke in the May '92 issue of GeoInfo Systems, a spatial decision support system (SDSS) is 'canned software that is intuitively obvious to use, solves problems efficiently and delivers immediate results'. SDSS is off-the-shelf software for carefully selected functions, i.e. bug-free point-and-shoot capabilities on very specific spatially-oriented needs. SDSSs don't require in-depth commands to operate, yet allow users to negotiate very sophisticated geographic analysis. Many of the distinctions between GIS and SDSS are derived from the differences in their target audiences. While GIS sites often employ technical analysts to plow through the nitty-gritty of setting up databases and defining complex functions, SDSS sites generally have but one or two business analysts who want to make spatial decisions but don't want to become immersed in the intricacies of GIS. The SDSS users don't seek a smorgasbord of commands, they want a select handful of intuitive operations to yield quick and effective answers. They want to avoid technically complex operations and while they're impressed by GIS' potential, what they really want is three or four buttons and an answer.

Population Geography
  • Population Geography is the study of spatial variations in distribution, density, composition and growth of human numbers on earth.
  • It is important because it links all other aspects of geography together.
Demography
  • Demography is the study of population characteristics.
  • It is significant because
  • There are more people living today than any other time in history.
  • There's been a population explosion since World War 2.
  • There is an inverse relationship between population growth and resources i.e. there are too many people in places without enough resources to support them and too few people in areas with over abundant resources
Thomas Malthus
  • Thomas Malthus, was a British Clergyman/economist.
  • He came up with the Malthusian Theory of Population Growth. The salient points of his theory were
  • Food production increased at an arithmetic ratio (1, 2, 3...) while population increased at an exponential ratio (1, 2, 4, 8...).
  • Population growth would outstrip food supply, and mass starvation would follow.

Industries include vehicle and appliance assembly, petroleum refining, and the manufacture of foodstuffs, textiles, metal and wood products, plastics, and pharmaceuticals. A sprawling city, Accra presents a varied appearance, with buildings of modern, colonial, and traditional African architecture. construction company : www.taysec.com.gh Accra guestbook University of Ghana The site of what is now Accra was occupied by villages of the Ga, the local people, when the Portuguese first visited here in the late 15th century. During the 17th century the Portuguese were forced to withdraw by the Dutch, who, along with the Danes and the English, founded rival trading posts, which became the settlements of Ussher Town, Christiansborg, and James Town, respectively. In the 19th century Great Britain purchased Dutch and Danish rights in the area, and in 1876 Christiansborg was made the capital of the Gold Coast Colony. The three separate towns grew and gradually coalesced to form the city of Accra. Much of the modern city's layout was planned in the 1920s, and since then growth has been rapid.

Geography
The fundamental characteristic of Argentina is the enormous contrast between the immense eastern plains and the imposing mountain range of the Andes to the west. This is the frontier with Chile and it has the highest peak in the Western hemisphere: the Aconcagua, 6.959 metres high. In its passage from Jujuy to Tierra del Fuego the range presents marvellous contrasts, the plateaux of the Northwest, the lake region, the forests and the glaciers of the Patagonian Andes. To the north, Chaco is a forested area which follows the rivers Bermejo, Salado and Pilcomayo.

Overview, general information, people, undergraduate and graduate sections, and links.
http://geog.tamu.edu/
Introduction
The Geography Department

The Department includes 16 full-time faculty, 10 associated faculty and research scientists, about 160 undergraduate majors, and about 40 M.S. and Ph.D. students. Externally funded research expenditures totaled approximately $1 M in the 2000-01 fiscal year. The department has three integrated state-of-the art spatial analysis laboratories that support research in geographic information science, spatial modeling, and remote sensing including advanced research in the areas of multi-spectral, hyper-spectral and radar remote sensing. These facilities also support first class undergraduate and graduate education in the burgeoning arena of geo-spatial technologies. Recently, the Department has added a faculty member specializing in coastal applications of GIS and a second faculty member in environmental geography. Graduate Studies
Our graduates accept a wide variety of jobs, such as applications of GIS to environmental, remote sensing, industrial and business needs; film and television production and broadcasting at local and national levels; and specialized software development for land use planning. Of our 37 M.S. and Ph.D. graduates from 1996-2000, 16 began advanced degree studies or secured positions in academic institutions, 15 accepted jobs in the private sector, 4 hold state or federal government positions, and 2 are teaching at the K-12 level. Thematic Focus Areas:
Human Geography: Geopolitics and World Systems Theory, Philosophy and geography, development and environmental policy
