COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course will focus on natural and human-induced (or accelerated) environmental change on the regional and global scales. Causes and implications of change will be considered. This course will focus specifically on the impacts of humans on their environment. These anthropogenic impacts may be linked to indirect modifications of the environment (climatic variability and change, ozone hole, Greenhouse effect) or to more direct modifications (dam construction, deforestation). To understand the full extent of these modifications on the environment, we must first establish an understanding of natural environmental dynamics in time and space. We must understand the nature and time scale of natural changes to understand over what time scale the environment responds to natural change and how it can be related to human-induced changes. First, an understanding of past climate change will help us put our perception of actual “climate change” in a global perspective. Second, we will see how sea level variations are mainly linked to natural processes. We will then be able to understand how global warming might affect sea level. Then we will be able to integrate the knowledge linked to these global, mainly natural, phenomenon as a basis for the analysis of human-induced changes (deforestation, acid rain, damming…).

COURSE OBJECTIVES
A background in geography will provide you with a unique perspective for viewing the earth and it will enhance your understanding and appreciation of the landscape around you. This course provides a general introduction to the earth's physical landscape through a better comprehension of the primary "spheres" of the earth: atmo sphere , litho sphere , hydro sphere , and bio sphere . The objective of the course is to give you a basic understanding of patterns and processes in the earth's physical environment through the spatial distributions and interrelations of elements composing each of the four primary "spheres" listed above. Relation to Principles of Undergraduate Learning: This course addresses to some degree all the principles of undergraduate learning, but particularly critical thinking, the integration of knowledge, and the understanding of society and culture (and their impact on the natural environment).

Welcome to the Department of Geography! The UW-Madison Department of Geography is a leader in the field of geography and offers exceptional opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate education. The Department has been consistently rated as one of the best in the country, currently rated as the number two graduate program, and for over 100 years has been the training ground for generations of geographers. The strength of our department is reflected in our ability to attract top-caliber students, compete for significant research funding, and win major awards, including more Guggenheim Fellowships than any other geography department. Our faculty have been recognized both by the university and within our profession with such honors as UW named chairs and AAG lifetime achievement awards Our Geography Program is divided into five major thematic areas physical geography , environmental studies, human geography, area studies and global systems, as well as cartography and GIS. What do Geographers study?
There are five thematic areas within geography: 1. Physical Geography Physical geographers study the earth systems and environmental processes, as well as the locational arrangements of each phenomenon and their interactions as physical systems. 2. Environmental Studies . People-Environment geographers study the interactions between humans and their use of the environment. More specifically, they study the human use, perception, and modification of environments. 3. Human Geography . Human geographers study the location and organization of human settlements and activities over earth space. 4. Area Studies and Global Systems

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY STANDARDS
Excerpts from Geography for Life Physical and human phenomena are spatially distributed over the Earth's surface. The goal of the national standards is a geographically informed person (1) who sees meaning in the arrangement of things in space; (2) who sees relations between people, place, and environments; (3) who uses geographic skills; and (4) who applies spatial and ecological perspectives to life situations. The World in Spatial Terms
Geography studies the relationships between people, places, and environments by mapping information about them into a spatial context. The geographically informed person knows and understands: How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective
How to use mental maps to organize information about people, places, and environments in a spatial context.
How to analyze the spatial organization of people, places and environments on the Earth's surface Places and Regions
The identities and lives of individuals and peoples are rooted in particular places and the human constructs called regions.

National Geography Standards
The National Geography Standards were established to form a framework that provides guidelines on what students should know about geography. The 18 standards listed below have been categorized into six essential elements.
The World in Spatial Terms
The geographically informed person knows and understands:
report information from a spatial perspective.
Indicators:
1. Learn how to make maps, globes, graphs, etc.
2. Describe characteristics, functions, and applications of maps, globes, and other images.
3. Identify advantages and disadvantages of maps and other images.
4. Identify locations of places, as well as physical and human features.
5. Use mental maps to answer geographic questions. 6. Analyze the spatial organization of people and places on Earth.
Places and Regions The geographically informed person knows and understands: Indicators: 1. Describe physical characteristics of a place. 2. Describe human characteristics of a place. 3. Compare characteristics of communities or regions.

GEOGRAPHY: Physical and Cultural Systems
FOCUS Geography, the study of the spatial aspects of human existence, enables students to find answers to questions about the world around them. A geographically informed person sees, understands, and appreciates the connections among people, places, and environments. Understanding these connections requires an acute awareness of space, which can be identified in terms of location, distance, direction, pattern, shape, and arrangement. With a strong grasp of geography, students will be prepared to understand issues and solve problems in the contemporary world. The standards and benchmarks contained in this strand should be applied throughout the social studies curriculum. STANDARD BENCHMARKS K-4 In Grades K-4, what students know and are able to do includes: A. The World in Spatial Terms G-1A-E1 identifying and describing the characteristics and uses of geographic representations, such as various types of maps, globes, graphs, diagrams, photographs, and satellite-produced images; G-1A-E2 locating and interpreting geographic features and places on maps and globes;

geography physical geography is the study of natural systems and cycles that interactwithin the Earth's life layer where land and oceans meet the atmosphere.
http://geography.bu.edu/focus_physical.html
The Department of Geography at Boston University offers two undergraduate programs: one in physical geography and one in human geography. There are crossover courses to give all students exposure to both sides of the discipline and both programs stress methods of spatial analysis, including Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing.
Physical Geography
Physical geography is the study of natural systems and cycles that interact within the Earth's life layer where land and oceans meet the atmosphere. The concentration in physical geography has been structured to provide exposure to the broad spectrum of geographic research in the natural sciences. At the same time it allows the student to concentrate in one of four topical areas: 1) landforms, soils, and vegetation, 2) hydrology, 3) climate, and 4) methods, including remote sensing and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). It also includes courses in methematics physics, biology, and earth science to provide a well-rounded and rigorous program of science education. (Please see program requirements described below.) Professional Opportunities Graduating physical geography students may find employment in firms consulting on environmental problems; research organizations addressing such diverse issues as forestry, water resources and global climate change; state and federal agencies with environmental, wildlife, and resource mandates; and public and private sector organizations in the field of remote sensing and GIS.
