GEOL 1100 (4 CR.) PHYSICAL GEOLOGY
A study of earth materials and processes including rocks and minerals, streams, glaciers, geologic structures, earthquakes, and plate tectonics. Students acquire scientific knowledge about the earth's formation, movement of crustal plates, modifications of landforms, water cycles and resources, soil preservation, and geologic hazards to mankind. Students use geologists' techniques and methods in the pursuit of scientific inquiry. Prerequisite: Completion of DVST 0510 (or equivalent placement test score).

101 Introductory Geology (1) Fall, Spring A survey course designed for liberal arts students covering many aspects of physical geology, the study of active earth processes. Labs illustrate lecture materials and the techniques used by geologists. Two field trips. Complements the material covered in Geology 103; either course can serve as an introductory course in geology. Staff. 103 Introduction to Earth History (1) Fall, Spring A survey course designed for liberal arts students and covering many aspects of historical geology, the study of evolving environments and life forms on Earth. Labs utilize fossils, rock samples, maps and field trips to illustrate techniques used by historical geologists. Complements the material covered in Geology 101; either course can serve as an introductory course in geology. Staff. 04 Earth Resources and the Environment (1) Fall, Spring Without earth resources, civilization would not exist. Gold, diamonds, water, oil, building materials - all of our material resources ultimately are derived from the earth. This course will examine the origin and geologic occurrence of these materials, and discuss the environ-mental implications of their utilization. No laboratory. Staff. 106 Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Other Geological Hazards

    http://www.castleton.edu/geology/courses/geocourses.html
Geology Courses GEY 107 General Geology - This course examines the physical and chemical characteristics and processes which shape and affect the planet on which we live. We discuss rocks and minerals, volcanoes and earthquakes, streams, erosion, and flooding, glaciers, characteristics of coastlines, and plate tectonics. GEY 108 Historical Geology - This course examines the evolution of the Earth and life on the Earth through time. We will discuss how the planet formed over 4.6 billion years ago, how the atmosphere initially formed and how it has changed with time. We will talk about the how the first life forms may have developed. We will talk about fossils and see how they can help geologists interpret how life and the environment have changed through over 4 billion years of Earth history. GEY 109 Environmental Geology - Geologic problems involving people, earth resources and the environment will be examined. Topics will include geologic hazards, pollution, environmental geology issues, and earth resources and their associated environmental impact. GEY 150 Explorations in Geology - These are lecture, lab, or seminar courses on selected, introductory-level topics in geology, especially those of interest to non-science majors. The topic for each course will be announced prior to the semester of offering, and the course may be taken more than once for credit. No more than two credits of GEY 150 may be used to satisfy the minimum geology requirements for BAGEY majors
