The Virtual Silurian Reef is a K12 distance-learning project of the geology Section of the Milwaukee Public Museum, funded by the Wisconsin Advanced Telecommunications Foundation. During the Silurian Period in earth history, 425 million years ago, when much of North America was covered by a shallow, tropical sea, reefs flourished in the area now occupied by Wisconsin and Illinois. This site uses these reefs as a vehicle for students to learn general principles, local details, and environmental significance of the study of the ancient past.

44. "The History And Geography Of Heard Island, Southern Indian Ocean"
general information about the location, discovery, geography, geology, climate, and culture of the island. Includes interactive map.
http://www.btinternet.com/~sa_sa/heard_island/heard.html
Location
Heard Island is situated in the extreme Southern Indian Ocean, on the Kerguelen Plateau, 4,100 km south-west of the Australian continent and 1,500 km north of Antarctica. Heard and McDonald Islands lie 40 km apart, the McDonald Islands to the west of Heard Island. Heard Island is located at 53°06'S, 73°30'E, and the McDonald Islands at 53°03'S, 72°36'E. Heard Island has an area of 368 sq km. It is uninhabited and the closest land to Heard Island are the Kerguelen Islands , 440 kilometres to the North and some five times larger. The Kerguelen Island group has a permanent community of approximately 100 scientists in summer. The next nearest human population centre from Heard Island, is Perth, Western Australia. Heard Island, situated in the Sub-Antarctic region of the globe, is a very special place, highly valued by anyone who has taken the time to look further than identifying it on a map of the world. Academics have stated that However, Heard Island is arguably the "most unique" of all the Sub-Antarctic islands.
Discovery
Heard Island did not have visitors until 1833. It is probable that no human had ever seen the Island until this time. Peter Kemp, A British sealer, was the first person thought to have seen the island on the 27

Rivers are affected by the geology and topography of the areas they flow through, because the slope of the land and the soil and rocks determine how fast water flows, how much of it soaks into the ground, how much runs into river and stream channels, and how quickly the rocks and soil erode. The eroded soil and rock are carried downstream until they settle out in a calm stretch of the river or until they reach the ocean. Water which soaks into the ground enters the groundwater system, and may help recharge one of the aquifers underlie the surface soil.

http://www.desertusa.com/du_mojave.html
The Mojave Desert
The transition from the hot Sonoran Desert to the cooler and higher Great Basin is called the Mojave Desert. This arid region of southeastern California and portions of Nevada, Arizona and Utah, occupies more than 25,000 square miles. On the northwestern boundary it extends from the Sierra Nevada range to the Colorado Plateau in the east; it abuts the San Gabriel-San Bernardino mountains in the southwest. Near the Great Basin-Mojave border lies Death Valley, the lowest point in North America and a national park. The Mojave's desert climate is characterized by extreme variation in daily temperature and an average annual precipitation of less than 5 inches. Almost all the precipitation arrives in winter. Freezing temperatures occur in winter, while summers are hot, dry and windy. The Mojave has a typical mountain-and-basin topography with sparse vegetation. Sand and gravel basins drain to central salt flats from which borax, potash and salt are extracted. Silver, tungsten, gold and iron deposits are worked. While some do not consider the Mojave a desert in its own right, the Mojave Desert hosts about 200 endemic plant species found in neither of the adjacent deserts.Cactus are usually restricted to the coarse soils of bajadas. What is radon? Radon is a radioactive gas that has no smell, taste, or color. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all rock and soil. When geologic conditions are favorable, the potential increases for high indoor levels of radon. If radon is natural, why is it a hazard? Outdoor radon levels never reach dangerous concentrations because air movement scatters radon into the atmosphere. Radon is a hazard in buildings because the gas collects in enclosed spaces. What conditions must be present for high indoor-radon levels? Four conditions must be present. The building must:
  • be built on ground that contains sufficient uranium.
  • have underlying soil that allows easy movement of radon.
  • have porous building materials, cracks, or other openings below the ground surface that allow radon from soil to enter the building.
  • have a lower air pressure inside than in the soil around the foundation.

The geological field work at the six Apollo sites was rigorously planned - some say too well orchestrated with no time for human thought, although this improved in the later "J" missions. The efforts behind the sites selections and scientific objectives are beyond the scope of this database. A large body of documentation exists on this subject. Several tasks were repeated at many stations, and average times are available. The first task was generally a geological description of the area, which took ~ 5 minutes, including photography. Additional tasks are discussed below. Unloading from the LM : NA Transporting by foot or MET
The few tools used on A-11 were carried by hand. The EMU had attach points for sample bags. The A-12 crew had a small rack which held their tools. This was carried by hand. On A-14, the Modularized Equipment Transporter (see misc. tools and equipment) was used to transport the tool rack (the same as on A-12) and other equipment during longer traverses. On A-12 and most later flights a clip on a cable which rolled up on a reel which was strapped to hoses on the front of the EMU was used to which several tools could be attached. This was known as a "yo-yo."
