Return to Geology Index Page Geology of the Albuquerque Area Seminar Leader Seminar description:
The natural landscape of a region influences its culture: the resources available for agriculture, for building materials, for fuel, for ornaments. In New Mexico, we are fortunate to be able to see the foundations of our state in beautifully exposed mountains, cliffs and rocks. These rocks and rock formations tell the geologic history of our region, including explosive volcanoes; lush, tropical forests and expansive seas; and dinosaurs and other life that inhabited ancient landscapes. The geologic history of New Mexico also foretold some of the human history: the uranium boom and its aftermath, including WIPP, the growth of cultures along our waterways, and the view from the top of the tramway. The goals of this seminar were: to familiarize teachers with the geologic history of the region, including, for example, rock outcrops, volcanism, mountain building and stream processes; to expose teachers to environmental geologic topics related to water issues and urbanization along the Rio Grande floodplain; and to introduce teachers to potential field trip sites for their students. Children (and young adults) are often keenly aware of the minerals, rocks, fossils and landscape around them, and are eager observers.

Other resources: 1997 field trip images Shell canyon in the Big Horn mountains of Wyoming showing deformed sediment rocks. What was this area like when the different layers of sediment were being deposited? How did the environment change as time progressed and different sediments were deposited? Why are the rocks deformed and when? Are there geologic resources here? Are there geologic hazards? Why does the canyon take the shape it does, and how long did it take to form? These are the types of questions that can be addressed in geology, and which this course can teach you to answer. This is the site where many of UNO's geology majors have taken geologic field camp, a capstone courses.

Spring 2003 You will find on this page information, materials, and other resources to accompany the course. As this site will be updated throughout the semester, check back often.
From its very beginning to the present, the Earth has undergone considerable physical, chemical and biologic change. This history can be read using various means from rocks and fossils accessible to us all. To study the history of the Earth is important not only because it helps us understand what processes and events have helped shape our planet's present physical and biologic make-up, but it can also help predict future events that may consequently affect humankind. This course is an introduction to the major events which had a profound impact on the changing physical and biologic landscape throughout Earth's history. The course will stress both theory and facts concerning the history of Earth and life, and more importantly, how we know it. The course is designed to give the student a broad perspective and appreciation of Earth's history and serve as a stepping-stone to more advanced courses in Earth Science.

Dr. Christopher A. McRoberts
