The Fall, 1998 GEOL 1010, Sec 003 will meet at 8AM MWF in the new Benson Earth Sciences Building Rm 180. If you are thinking of signing up for this course check out the syllabus and the links. I have been working on the notes so much is new. I am adopting a new text, Press and Siever for Spring 98, and I still have some work to do on the syllabus and Net Notes
I am still working on the syllabus for the Fall, so some things may still change, but things are pretty much together. Also the daily lecture notes are actively evolving. I have added a glossary this past Spring, and am working in the links as I prepare each lecture.

10. St Helena - Geology
The geology of the island of St Helena, South Atlantic Ocean
http://www.btinternet.com/~sa_sa/st_helena/st_helena_geology.html
To fully understand the physical geography of St. Helena, a knowledge of the island's geological structure, lithology and history is essential. This page augments a concise description of these elements with a consideration of St. Helena in the wider context of ocean-floor spreading and plate tectonics. A description of the island's physiography and comments on the economic geology are also included.
Physiography
St. Helena is the deeply eroded summit of a composite volcano rising from the sea floor at a depth of 4,224m. The sub-aerial portion is approximately 122 sq. km. (47 sq. miles) in area - about half the size of the Isle of Wight. The highest point, Diana's Peak , is 823m above sea level. The small size of the visible island belies the true dimensions of this massive volcano; it is a major feature on the earth's surface. The base of the volcanic pile measures some 130km in diameter and the volume of the cone is estimated to be twenty times that of Mt. Etna - the largest European volcano. St. Helena is truly remote and, together with Ascension Island (1,127km distant), comprises the only land in 3 per cent of the earth's surface area.

11. Physical Geology Of Jamestown RI
Reviews the geological processes that shaped Jamestown RI and the Narragansett Bay area; starting with the emergence of Avalonia about 565 million years ago, continuing through continental collisions, glacial modifications to the land and postglacial increases in sea level.

Narraganset Bay offers many reminders that it was carved by glacial ice The story of the land that has become Jamestown Starting at the earliest point in time that experts have been able to identify the location of the basement rocks under Jamestown and all of Rhode Isand, this narrative traces the journey of that land across oceans and through continental collisions to the relatively recent past, when Rhode Island was sculpted by glacial action and Narragansett Bay was created by rising seas. Quite literally, Jamestown's land has been at the leading edge of much of the world's history.
565 Million Years of Geological History
A Very Brief Summary
All of Rhode Island was part of a micro-continent called Avalonia , which formed south of the equator, off of the coasts of both Africa and South America, when they were joined as part of a larger continent, more than 565 million years ago.

CBC Initiates Highly Innovative Online Science Course
Atmospheric Science
Spring Quarter 2003 Columbia Basin College will offer a highly innovative online course in which students are introduced to the science of meteorology by studying weather as it happens. Columbia Basin College along with more than one hundred colleges and universities nationwide are joining forces with the American Meteorological Society (AMS) to introduce this course, geared to provide students at minority-serving colleges and universities access to Online Weather Studies. The course, Introduction to Atmospheric Science, was developed by the AMS with funding from the National Science Foundation and relies heavily on the use of the latest weather data, maps, forecasts, and satellite and radar imagery delivered via the Internet. Introduction to Atmospheric Science is partially delivered over the Internet. Students have hands-on learning experiences by completing two laboratory-like investigations each week during the quarter.

Brief explanation of the geology of Death Valley, California General Physiography
Death Valley is located just east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. It is part of the Basin and Range physiographic province of the western United States, just one of the desert basins that lie enclosed between mountain ranges in the southwest. The Basin and Range province includes much of Nevada, western Utah, southern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and southeastern California.
General Location Map showing the eastern Sierra Nevada region in California and the southern portion of the state of Nevada:
Death Valley is probably most known for being the lowest land elevation in North and South America. It receives an average annual precipitation of 1.5 inches per year as it is situated in the rainshadow of the mountains to its west. The highest temperatures in the United States in the summer are often recorded in Death Valley where summer temperatures reach an average of about 100 degrees Fahrenheit (average for day and night combined). In the winter, average temperatures are about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures commonly exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit during many days of the summer.
Death Valley also contains one of the world's largest salt pans, consisting of various salts including the most common table salt variety, sodium chloride. Groundwater in the valley is close to the surface but too salty for drinking. Several springs or small seeps, however, do provide a fresh water source for people and animals. The path of these springs often follows faults or fractures in the rocks.
