    Physical Geology Collection
There are approximately 63,000 specimens in the six physical geology collections (mineralogy, gems, petrology, sedimentary rock, economic geology and meteorites).
    Meteorites-
The collection is particularly strong in iron meteorites. It also contains very large amounts of Murchison (a Type 2 carbonaceous chondrite), Allende (a Type 3 carbonaceous chondrite), and Indarch (an enstatite chondrite).
    Meteorite Catalog

This catalog is downloadable in Adobe Acrobat format.
    optimized for: Acrobat Reader 3.0
    Gem Collection-
Most of the Museum's small but significant collection of representative precious and semi-precious stones is on exhibit. The most significant specimen is a 62,000 carat single crystal of topaz, very light yellow and transparent, which has been described as "textbook quality." Recent donations of jewelry including diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, opal, jade and pearls have increased the variety and educational value of the collection.
Mineral Collection- The collection includes 146 holotypes and 471 paratypes.

... Final Exam Class 1 Overview of Physical Geology - Notes
Read pp. 9 - 23 Introduction Overview of Exploration Geology Mineral seldom occur at the surface and are seldom obvious. Most often they are buried, sometimes at considerable depth. Since they are not visible we must detect their presence indirectly and extrapolate between points where data is known. Many different techniques can be used to detect an ore body. This class will discuss the more important techniques in some detail; others are only briefly mentioned. The most important techniques used in exploration geology include geological field methods, geochemical sampling methods, and geophysical methods. Exploration conducted from the surface is far less expensive than drilling or underground excavation, so thorough surface exploration usually precedes either of these activities. The Exploration Process Exploration Methods If bedrock is exposed anywhere at or around a prospect, then surface bedrock mapping is an essential beginning step for an exploration program. This would include mapping and sampling (field geologic methods). This work focuses on identifying and mapping outcrops, describing mineralization and alteration, measuring structural features (geometry), and making geologic cross sections.

Geology is the scientific study of the dynamic and ever-changing Earth. Embracing concepts central to chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics, geologists attempt to understand the modern and historical processes and evolutionary events that continually shape the Earth. Geologists are responsible for locating all non-biological resources on Earth including precious metals, fossil-fuels, and ground water. Geologists play a critical role in recognizing, predicting, and mitigating the potential and real environmental impacts resulting from either human activities or natural disasters. And as we probe our solar system, geologists will continue to play a central role in the exploration of other planetary bodies. The Geology courses at Lander University are part of the new Environmental Science discipline within the Division of Biological and Physical Sciences. Currently, the following geology courses are being offered to the Environmental Science majors:

BSc in Geology and Physical Geography Edinburgh University provides an established degree programme in Geology and Physical Geography that is designed to meet society's need for geoscience graduates who can apply their skills to land and site management problems.
    Varied and Applicable
Graduates from the Geology and Physical Geography degree programme are choosing a mixture of careers, from the academic, through direct employment in industry and local authorities, to diverse careers in multinational companies.
    Mapping or Project work?
Students carry out their own projects as part of their honours year. If you want to concentrate on geology, or do a project dominated by geological components, you would usually carry out four weeks independent mapping in the summer between your third and final year. On the other hand, opportunities are also available to carry out laboratory- or field-based projects solely concentrating on physical geography. The degree offers you the scope to delve deeper into those areas of most interest to you! Third year students examining Triassic desiccation cracks, Mull

Paper No. 16-0 COASTAL GEOLOGY AND PHYSICAL OCEANOGRAPHY - EXPLORING THE LINKS HOWD, Peter A. , College of Marine Science, Univ of South Florida, 140 7th Ave S, St Petersburg, FL 33701, phowd@marine.usf.edu. For nearly as long as man has gone down to the sea, we have been aware that there is an inexorable link between the moving water and the changing coastal landscape. A primary focus of the nearshore processes community since the NSTS program in the late 1970's and through the series of major experiments at Duck, NC has been to quantitatively understand the evolution of surf zone morphology in the context of a rigorous knowledge of the wave and current processes operating during storms and on scales of less than roughly 1km, largely determined by the amount of beach that can be reasonably surveyed in a day. Much progress has been made as a result of these focused studies. As we move forward making our coastal science even more relevant to the temporal and spatial scales of societal interests (the length of a mortgage and the size of zoning districts are good places to start), we will of necessity be working closely with physical oceanographers to help us, as geologists, understand the forces responsible for shaping the landscape at ever increasing temporal and spatial scales. These skills include scientific observation, data interpretation, and the ability to think quantitatively and critically. You will be expected to develop an understanding and familiarity with earth processes and materials. These skills are not purely academic, many of society's most pressing environmental problems require sound scientific reasoning. This course will require a focused effort, but your reward will come from a solid understanding of the planet we inhabit. Enjoy!
