LSSU Alumni, Geology Professor Publishes Research
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lewis Brown, professor of geology at Lake Superior State University, and LSSU alumna Cammy Bright, Sault Ste. Marie, have collaborated with two other authors to publish research that was presented this month at the National Geological Society of America Conference in Boston.
Bright, the lead author of the publication, is an LSSU geology graduate who is now pursuing a master’s degree in geology at University of Missouri-Columbia. Co-authors include Tim Lyons, who is Bright’s advisor at UM-C, and Carl Rexroad of the Indiana Geological Survey. The title of the publication is Rare-earth element analysis of biogenic (conodont) apatite: Desmoinesian (Middle Pennsylvanian) and Missourian (Upper Pennsylvanian), Midcontinent, USA.
“This is my first publication in geochemistry of conodonts and I have more planned with Cammy and Tim Lyons,” said LSSU’s Brown. “The future work, to be completed this year, will interpret oxygen isotopes derived from conodonts to reconstruct middle Pennsylvanian paleoclimates from New Mexico, Illinois Basin, the midcontinent, and Spain. This is a major part of the work for my National Geographic grant of several years ago.”
Brown and Rexroad have worked with LSSU students for more than a decade on similar geology research projects. The center of their research has been with conodonts, the microscopic, hard-part, fossilized remains of primitive, jawless fish that lived approximately 510 to 240 million years ago. Brown said conodont remains are useful in resolving geological problems such as when a set of rocks was deposited at a site, and in what environmental setting the rocks formed.

    The PLATES Project
plates@ig.utexas.edu News Reconstructions Collaborations ... Images PLATES is a program of research into plate tectonic and geologic reconstructions. It is supported by a consortium of oil companies. The project has four main objectives:
    • Model past and present plate movement. Construct accurate, high resolution global, regional or local plate models. Compile comprehensive databases. Apply geographical, geological and geophysical data to plate models. Develop plate motion computer software. Manipulate and display plate models, reconstructions, and databases. Apply plate motion models. Use models to examine geological problems of global and regional extent.
PLATES maintains an up-to-date oceanic magnetic and tectonic database, continuously adding new paleomagnetic, hot spot, geological and geophysical data to extend the span and accuracy of global plate reconstructions PLATES ' reconstructions are built around a comprehensive database of finite-difference poles of rotation, derived both from extensive plate motion research at UTIG, using the PLATES interactive plate modeling software, and from published studies. Updated plate motion models are in turn applied to regional tectonic studies by

    Undergraduate Research Projects in Geology
Undergraduate students in the Department of Geology work closely with their professors on many interesting research projects. In the last two years undergraduate research projects have been completed by about a dozen students. Here is a listing of some of the most recent undergraduate research projects. Many of these projects have or will result in papers presented at regional or national scientific conferences with the students as senior or co-authors. Projects are usually done for course credit under GEO1816 (4 QH), as part of the experiential education requirement (GEO1888, EER), as part of a summer intership, or the cooperative education program. If you are interested in doing an undergraduate research project please come in and talk with one of the geology faculty. If you are interested in information about the Experiential Education Requirement come in and see Prof. Colgan.
    Recent Undergraduate Research Projects
Magdalena Pavlich (fall 1997) - Magdalena and professor Colgan developed a web-based field trip to Iceland used in GEO1212 as a teaching aid. She was also a co-author on a paper presented at a professional meeting in Portland, Maine in the spring of 1998.
