INTEGRATING 3D OBJECTS IN 2D IMAGES by Stefan Didak

Integrating 3D objects in 2D images The following small how-to tutorial assumes you have basic knowledge about 3D Studio MAX. Most everyone in the field of computer graphics and animation will remember the movies like Terminator 2 - Judgement day and Jurassic Park. The very realistic computer graphics were partly due to the integration of the 3D animated footage with the environment (ie. the background). The backgrounds used in the movies was simply the footage shot on the location. In this small how-to we will concentrate on just a single static background image. If you want matching shadows of 3D objects in a static background or if you want to add a form of layering in a 2D background image for 3D objects so they can pass in front or in the back , please read on. 3D Studio MAX offers a special material type, the Matte Material , that will allow you to combine 2D backgrounds with the 3D scene in a very efficient and flexible manner. The remainder of this page will show you how to use the Matte Material and how to setup a basic scene. Selecting a background to work with The first thing we need is a background we can work with. In the sample on this page I have chosen for a photograph of an office building. The geometry of the building in the following image is pretty basic which is just what we needed for this example. Note that you can download the MAX file along with the background image on the bottom of the page as a ZIP file.

Geometry: Lights
So, How do you put lights on cars? What's the easiest way to make them? These and more questions will be answered here in this tutorial.
INTRODUCTION:
The lights on a MM2 car fall into the following categories: "Glowing Balls" and flat surfaces. While they are all flat surfaces in Zmodeler, they are rendered in those types by MM2, according to the object definitions. The HLIGHT_L and HEADLIGHT#_H:m objects are really in a group together. We'll start with those first, or you can jump to another light here:
HEADLIGHT and HLIGHT Objects

TLIGHT and RLIGHT objects

BLIGHT objects
The HLIGHT and HEADLIGHT objects
OK, you have your car's BODY_H either done or almost done, and know where the lights should appear in MM2. If this is NOT the case, please either skip this step and come back to it later or you may risk the possibility of having to redo these, if not at least move them.
Now, click and drag a square on one side of the car in the approximate area of where the headlight is. We will copy and mirror this object later to make the other side's headlight. NOTE: the bigger the surface is, the brighter the light will be in MM2. Make it about the size I have, maybe a little smaller. (The blue and white dashed line is what defines the position/size of the object I've made)
In the dialog box that appears after you've made the square, enter this:

Introduction To DirectX 8.0 Pipeline Before getting along with the DirectX 8 pipeline, let's go back in time and take a quick look at the DirectX 7 pipeline. Features of DirectX 7.0 and its predecessor's pipeline:
  • Fixed function pipeline.
  • Had to set and reset lot of states.
  • No control over the vertices once it enters into the pipeline.

We would like to get a rough head count of the level of participation. Please do this ASAP (after some aimless procrastination) to help out with our planning. THE TUTORIALS FOR SUMMER 2001
Assuming sufficient interest, we will be running three tutorials this summer. They will meet in the evenings so as not to interfere with any day time obligations that you might have; they will most probably meet twice per week for six weeks or so, starting the week of July 1. As with last year's tutorials, they will not count for Harvard University credit nor Math Concentration credit, but the final paper can be used for the 5 page, junior paper requirement. You will also receive a 'stipend' of $600 for attending the tutorial. This is not enough to live on (unless you sleep in the Cambridge Common and eat only oatmeal), so you should arrange some other activities for the summer in Cambridge. Also, you will be responsible for your own lodging, etc. Our tutorial program has no official university affiliation and no obligation to take care of you during the summer.

    About these activities:
MAGE and PREKIN are software packages used by scientists to assist them in understanding molecular structure and function. PREKIN allows the user, starting with a set of Cartesian coordinates, to create a database that can then be displayed as an image using MAGE . The images (referred to as Kinemages) can be manipulated in 3 Dimensions. In addition, it is possible to perform distance and angle measurements on the objects as well as draw new lines that can be incorporated into the image. These capabilities make MAGE and PREKIN an excellent tool for use in K-12 mathematics and science. We have used PREKIN and MAGE to create five introductory databases that contain images found in the K-12 mathematics and science curricula. We are presently developing and testing activities to be used with these databases. We feel the use of these software packages, in addition to other public domain software found over the Internet, have several interesting features for use in K-12 education, amoung them:

Creating Geometry and Preparation for Succesful Transfer to Rapid Prototyping Systems
    Written by: The Bigcheez.
-please read tutorial notes at bottom for version numbers and references-
What is a Rapid Prototype System?
A rapid prototype system is a machine used to build a physical model from digital geometry created using a computer assisted design tool such as Alias. Alias uses two file formats to transfer to these systems known as STL (SteroLithography) and SLC (SteroLithography Contour). An STL file is a tesselated file format containing triangle data of the geometry. An SLC file contains contour lines known as polylines much in the form of slices of geometry. 99.9 percent of the time you will be dealing with an STL File so we are going to go over STL.
So I'm starting a model, what should I do first? Set your construction options. These should be set to fit within the tolerances of the rapid prototyping machine. If unsure, check the system's documentation or web site. Save these out so you won't have to set them again later on.
