Site Map Procedures for the Submission of an Approved Thesis in the Master of Science in Urban Policy Studies, Andrew Young School of Policy Studies Revised February, 1998 Preconditions Candidates for the Master of Science in Urban Policy Studies in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies may submit an approved thesis, rather than completing a supervised practicum or internship to complete the requirements for the degree. Students must select a nd complete one of these three options in order to receive an M.S. in Urban Policy Studies. This document outlines the procedures and requirements associated with submitting an approved thesis. The decision to write a thesis is made by the student with the approval of the student's faculty advisor and the department chair or the chair’s designate. Before these people can give their approval, the student must demonstrate that an appropriate m ember of the graduate faculty of the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies is willing to chair the thesis committee, and that two other appropriate people, at least one of whom is a full-time faculty member, are willing to serve on the com mittee. Normally, a student must have completed all required course work for the degree before registering for thesis credits. In special cases a student who has no more than two courses remaining to complete in their program, and who anticipates completing t hese within the next two terms may register for thesis credit with their advisor's approval.

HIV Infection and AIDS Georgia, 1991 Public health surveillance efforts for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the United States have documented an increasing proportion of cases among persons who reside outside the largest metropolitan areas (1,2). These findings, coupled with results of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence studies, have led to the development of HIV-related prevention and treatment services in smaller cities and rural areas. This report presents results of HIV-infection and AIDS surveillance in Georgia (1990 population: 6.5 million) for 1991 and compares these findings for urban and rural areas. During 1991, AIDS was diagnosed in 1286 persons residing in Georgia (Figure 1). Of these, 920 (72%) were reported from the state health district that includes Atlanta, in which approximately 36% of the state's total population resides; 236 (18%) cases were reported from health districts that include smaller cities *; and 130 (10%) were from districts that include only outlying or rural areas **. Overall, 74% of men with AIDS were reported from Atlanta, compared with 56% of women with AIDS. When compared with 1990, in 1991 the incidence of AIDS decreased 4% in Atlanta but increased 16% in the rest of the state. In an anonymous, population-based HIV serosurvey among women delivering infants in Georgia during 1991, the prevalence of HIV infection was 1.6 per 1000 women in Atlanta; 1.8, in health districts including smaller cities; and 0.9, in rural areas. Based on extrapolation from these rates, during 1991 there were an estimated 70 births to HIV-positive women in Atlanta, compared with 94 in other areas of the state.

GIL Library Catalog Founded in 1906, Georgia Southwestern State University is located in Americus, one of Georgia's most historic and graceful antebellum cities. The university provides a wide variety of undergraduate and master's degree programs serving the southwestern region and attracting students from throughout Georgia. More than 2,600 residential and commuter students are enrolled and the student body averages 24 years of age. Students come primarily from Georgia, but some 25 states and 37 nations also are represented among enrollees. The university offers 38 bachelor's degree programs in arts and sciences, including a bachelor of fine arts, business administration, computer and information sciences, education and nursing; 20 master's degree programs in education, administration, computer science, and midwifery, plus a specialist program in education and pre-professional programs in law, medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and various allied health-care professions. Georgia Southwestern and the Georgia Institute of Technology offer a dual-degree program in engineering leading to a bachelor's degree in science or mathematics from Georgia Southwestern and a bachelor's degree in engineering from Georgia Tech. The university also offers cooperative programs with South Georgia Technical College and other two-year institutions, culminating in a baccalaureate degree from Georgia Southwestern.
