The location of one of Augusta's six strip clubs, The Marine Room, poses a problem for the mayor and other city officials. It sits due East of the Chamber of Commerce offices, leaving possible clients and would-be entrepreneurs wondering about the Garden City. Staff Writer When serving as hosts to business leaders from out of town, Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce Chairman Jim West is very conscientious of what side of the organization's building he enters with them. ``When we have clients in town, we bring them in on the east side of the building and close the curtains on the west side of the building,'' Mr. West said. It's not superstition or force of habit that caused him to adopt that practice. It's the business across the street from his offices in the 600 block of Broad Street the Marine Room. The Marine Room and its fellow clubs in a three-block area Discotheque Lounge, Baby Dolls, Fantasy's and The Joker Lounge and Dolls at the corner of Walton Way and Ninth Street are a constant topic of conversation between Mr. West and his guests.

Civics Week 2002 Dear Georgia Educator: I am pleased to join State School Superintendent Linda Schrenko in continuing what I believe is an exciting program for Georgia’s schoolchildren. The Georgia General Assembly passed legislation creating “Civics Day” in Georgia’s schools in 1997. Since that time, the program has expanded from one day of activities to an entire week being held October 28 th - November 1 st . I am asking for your active involvement in this program. Not enough Georgians vote In fact, our state typically ranks 48 th in the nation in the percentage of eligible adults who take part in elections. Georgia’s Election Day voter-turnout has improved slightly in recent elections, but far too many citizens still do not vote. Recognizing that the rate of voter participation among young adults is particularly low, the Georgia General Assembly created Civics Day to help educate Georgia’s schoolchildren about the democratic process and the importance of voting. Research has found that voting is a habit that must be learned early. By educating the adults of tomorrow on the importance of voting and their stake in the political process, we believe schools can make a dramatic, long-term impact on the problem of voter apathy and nonparticipation.
