Sanders, is an education organization with the mission to promote and support the continuous improvement of educational opportunities for all learners in the Southeast. The organization’s commitment to continuous improvement is manifest in an applied research-to-practice model that drives all of its work. Building on theory and craft knowledge, SERVE staff develop tools and processes designed to assist practitioners and policymakers with their work, ultimately, to raise the level of student achievement in the region. Evaluation of the impact of these activities combined with input from affected stakeholders expands SERVE’s knowledge base and informs future research. This vigorous and practical approach to research and development is supported by an experienced staff strategically located throughout the region. This staff is highly skilled in providing needs-assessment services, conducting applied research in schools, and developing processes, products, and programs that inform educators and increase student achievement. In the last three years, in addition to its basic research and development work with over 170 southeastern schools, SERVE staff provided technical assistance and training to more than 18,000 teachers and administrators across the region.

Georgia’s P-16 Initiative created a Plan for Having a Qualified Teacher in Every Public School Classroom by 2006. This plan addresses two goals:
Objective 1: Improve the quality of teaching in Georgia through comprehensive and integrative changes in teacher recruitment, teacher preparation, teacher standards, teacher professional development, and teacher retention.
Objective 2: Improve student achievement in Georgia’s schools through improving the quality of teaching.
To accomplish these goals, specific objectives have been developed. Those objectives include:
    • Plans to Reduce Shortage and Turn-Over of Qualified Teachers
Balance teacher supply and demand in all subject fields, grade levels, and geographic regions of the state. Decrease teacher attrition during the first three years of teaching.

    Coastal Area Agency on Aging
The primary function of the Coastal Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is to plan and administer programs designed to improve the quality of life for senior citizens who are in the greatest social and economic need. The main objectives of this department are to identify and develop resources in the areas of nutrition, transportation, health care, social and recreational activities. Coordinating services through a network of 17 contractors, the AAA fosters a comprehensive, coordinated service delivery system that promotes the independence of and reduces the isolation of coastal area older adults. The CGRDC, as the Area Agency on Aging, is responsible for the planning, administration, coordination, monitoring, advocacy and funding of community-based programs and services. This mission is accomplished through partnerships with cities, counties, private nonprofit and for-profit service organizations throughout the nine counties of coastal Georgia. Activities are funded by the Division of Aging Services of the Georgia Department of Human Resources through the Older Americans' Act of 1965 (as amended), the Social Services Block Grant, the Community Care Services Program, state-funded community grants and other local resources. AGING SERVICES ADVISORY COUNCIL The AAA is governed by the Aging Services Advisory Council a 29-member group comprised of older persons, advocates for aging services and community leaders. The Council assists the aging services staff in developing goals and objectives to provide funding and community-based services for coastal area older adults, in distributing funding according to an allocation plan and in approving final budgets as included in the area plan of Aging Services.
