Georgia Major accomplishments on the teaching quality agenda: Implementation of Georgia's strategic action plan has begun. This plan is being funded through a Title II Teacher Quality Grant . This initiative is designed to put a qualified teacher in every classroom by 2006. On July 1, 2000, House Bill 1187 went into effect. This bill, titled the A+ Education Reform Act of 2000 , is a comprehensive bill aimed at improving education for all students in Georgia. The University System of Georgia and the state superintendent have made teacher education and professional development a priority. SREB Jennifer Burke August 1998 Technology Standards for Teachers “To be effective, technology certification for educators needs to be part of formal education policy and a required element of school and teacher evaluations. . . . Educators need a system of technology training and certification.” Council on Basic Education, 1998. The rapid increase in the availability of computers and other technology in schools represents a significant investment, and state leaders are concerned about results. To what extent does technology use result in improved student learning? Research has found that teacher skill in using technology is a major factor in improving student learning with technology. Teachers must know not only how to use technology but also when and why to use it. Teacher technology standards identify essential skills teachers need for effective use of computers and other electronic equipment in schools today. State teacher licensure and certification has not kept pace with rapid changes in technology and teaching. Linking technology skills assessments to licensing requirements helps ensure that teachers have the skills to support and guide students and to increase student learning using technology. Prevent Child Abuse Georgia has developed a broad range of workshops and programs that reach professionals, community groups, parents, and children. Education for Professionals Professional education helps heal the damaging effects of abuse, both in children and in adult survivors. Prevent Child Abuse Georgia is a leader in helping professionals learn how to help survivors of child abuse rebuild a healthy sense of trust, appropriately express feelings of hurt, anger, and betrayal, and grow to become healthy, nonabusive individuals. We conduct training and partner with other groups to offer professionals the specialized education they need on child abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment. North Carolina Introduction The Resource Center on Educational Equity of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), in collaboration with the New England Comprehensive Assistance Center, has developed profiles of state education accountability systems.
